The film does does cover the racism of the 60s.
One scene has the Battalion's wives talking about everyday life on post, and one wife is concerned about doing her clothes at the laundromat in town. She can't do her colored clothes there, because there is a sign in the window that says "Whites Only." The other wives had to clue her in to the discrimination, to which she replies, "Well that's just terrible!"

Sam Elliot looked like has was having the time of his life during the movie, they showed the film to the troops and they would howl whenever the gruff Master Sargeant would say something funny.

The scene where the wives deliver the telegrams instead of the cab driver was really heartbreaking and well done just like Saving Private Ryan.

I was going to post the same. She said "Methodist," or I think maybe kind of muffed it in a child's way, like "Nothingest." But not atheist; an atheist wouldn't pray.

I think she said "Methodist". Can anyone confirm?

Yes, she said "Methodist", not "athiest".

That very scene represents, I believe, why President Bush will not allow the press to cover the present war in the manner to which they had become accustomed. While the press, in theory, could perform a valuable function, they have become, hopefully unwittingly, aides to the enemy over time.

"Born on the Fourth of July," in which Tom Cruise plays an American soldier who becomes a paraplegic and joins the peace movement.

Oliver Stone (who directed the film) fought in Vietnam, and the "soldier" was a Green Beret named Ronald Kovic who was paralyzed after having his spine shot out during a firefight in Vietnam. The treatment that he and other soldiers recieved from the VA and the utter senselessness of the conflict turned Kovic to the anti-war movement.

It ticks me off to see the author deriding both men just because he doesn't like the message of the film.

I have not seen the movie yet. I wanted to wait for the crowd to die down some so I could watch it without all the crap around me going on.

I am a Vietnam vet, with the 4th Infantry Division in An Khe, of the Central Highlands region. I was not there a full tour as I was hit and medivaced out. I spend five months in various Army hospitals in Japan and Fort Benning.

For too long I have listen to liberal slime whine about Vietnam. I was spit on in the Atlanta airport and called a baby-killer by some hippie long hair that had not had a bath in two months. He may yet still be checking his jaw to see if it is brokern. A security cop saw it, came running over, told me to just move on and he'd handle it. He did not want me pulled into some hissie fit by the scum.

Throughout all my military service, I went where I was told to go and did what I was told to do. I was a soldier, proud of it and never second guessed my decision to join the Army back in 1970.

Today, some of my brothers in the infantry have fallen in battle far far from home. At the same time, liberals and socialists in the US Congress question the funding to these brave souls and the Kennedy's, Daschle's, Gephardt's and other socialist want nothing more than to have this country gravel at the feet of their loving communist. I will not give in. I will fight again if need be. I will fights these scum till my last breath. I sworn an oath to the Constitution way back in 1970. I think it still stands.

Pray for our country and republic ladies and gentlemen. The enemy are at the gates, they are inside the gates. This, we must defend.

I agree with you regarding Methodist. I had my wife read the first post and she caught it also. No atheist in this movie. Besides why would an atheist be praying and to whom?

I'm one of those weird females who loves war movies,

Count me in too! I used to watch old WWII movies with my Daddy. Our whole family went to see "The Green Berets" when it came out. I STILL like that movie! I was able to watch ALL of "Saving Private Ryan", something Sir SuziQ wasn't even able to do. But I do have to admit, during the newer movies with more graphic violence, I watch parts of them through the fingers on my hand!

I have a cousin who flew helicopters in Vietnam; he even trained at Fort Benning, but I don't know if he had anything to do with this battle. He's a few years older than I, so I never really talked to him about the war. I did find out from one of my brothers that my cousin was also a SAR pilot like the Danny Glover character in Bat 21, though he flew the helo. He was career Army and later was a officer of (I think) the 3rd Armored Division during the Gulf War. He retired from the Army in the early 90's. Maybe we can convince HIM to write a book about his experiences!

We haven't seen the movie yet, but we hope to see it sometime this week. Having read the book, I know to bring LOTS of tissues with me!
