The Subject line almost always identifies the content

You've got to be kidding.

re post#36:

If it the load gets too heavy to carry, ask someone to help you carry it. Pray about it.

Add a bunch of four letter words to your filter settings..

It's great for getting rid of unwanted "adult" spam.

(as well as unwanted correspondence from the ex.)

re post #46: Yep, the RESTART button can get a real workout on some days, but it never gets as much use as the DELETE button.

You're defending the indefensible here -- how can it be remotely OK to send e-mails to my kids promising things like "extreme farmyard action?"

Well, the internet search engines which include "adult content" are not any better. Perverts on the internet are not behaving like "adults" and their "content" is outright pornographic. Why "adult content" is included in any search engine is beyond me.

Let me 'splain something. The internet was basically created and forwarded by those wanting to view and trade porn anonomously and by those wanting to pirate video games and software. They see the internet as theirs, and they are not going to give it up. You are treading on their territory, wanting to change what they created for themselves. I remember how the internet was in 1995 or 1996 - pop-up ads were not in abundance, not everyone and his brother had a website, there were no law suits over "rights to web names", parents were not concerened and heck, I even knew intelligent professionals who said "The inter-what?" Now, all of the above is untrue - and life has not gotten any better because of the internet. I did not have it in High school, and no kid needs it today. You do not have a right to a computer, e-mail or the internet. You are using a resource(that in deed is very helpful) that was partially created to forward all of the things that the "new users of computer technology" do not want. Well, you have to play by the rules of the owners of the domain, and the "perverts" and hackers are not going away any time soon. The more you press for "internet controls", the more they will make your life a living hell.

First I tried to give up smoking for Lent, but I was getting anxiety attacks. (Good thing I also gave up meat, so at least I had something going).

Anyway, to make up for the smoking, I've been giving up TV at night. What a great relief this has been, not having to watch the gay porno that passes for sitcoms.

If you want it, keep it. If you don't want it, toss it. Junk snailmail or junk email, makes no difference. The price of any communications system is commercial use. To elimate commercial use is to either eliminate the communications system or eliminate the capitalism that drives the commercial use of it.

I'll keep the email system and the capitalism, myself.

You're right. A few years back I read that the primary drivers for internet development were pornography and stock investment.

Which still doesn't give some mouth-breather the right to spam my kids with it.

Libertarian morality in a nutshell: turn over the asylum to the inmates, and hope your barricades are strong enough to keep them out.

Sounds a bit backwards, if you ask me.

Folks here would rather live under the illusion that you can have good things in a human society without having any downsides. And many of those same folks make fun of the tinfoil hat crowd.

Sometimes I think the only reason God doesn't smite us all with obliteration is for the entertainment value.

You're living under the illusion that we can and should do nothing about the downside. That's a pretty idiotic illusion.

There is no question, however, that the advent of chemical and surgical contraception which rendered the notion of procreative sex somehow medieval has resulted in the breakdown of marriage, increase in promiscuity, reduction of woman to an object for self-gratification, the disordering of natural human relationships including that of the person to himself and -- possibly most dangerous of all --

I doubt almost every aspect of that sentence. I don't think contraception has rendered procreative sex medieval, I don't think it has any relationship to the breakdown of marriage, I'm with you on the promiscuity but that's a given, I see no reduction of woman to an object of self-gratification and if I did I wouldn't relate it to contraception, and I don't see this supposed disorder. And as for the constant eugenics charge, while it's true that many of the early pioneers in organized reproduction planning were a little off if the destruction of minorities was their goal they have failed miserably, just who are the people breeding uncontrollably on this rock? The non-whites.

I see the usual boogie-man stuff here. There's something you have chosen not to use for reasons of your own which are none of my business, but because of the assumed rightness of your position you blame all the worlds wo's on it. The simple fact of the matter is that some form of birth control or another has been around for centuries, it's only been fairly recently we've gotten really good at it but it's been there for a long time. Society right now is going through a rather typical upheaval, that's what happens because we're always advancing technology and awareness. Each bump in technology or awareness causes the rules to change, the dynamic of history is that the rules are always 2 steps behind the reality, so nobody is ever really sure what's going on. But one thing you can count on is that there will always be people saying that society is self destructing, and yet the only real melt down of society this planet has ever seen was in Europe in the dark ages.

Euclid complained about suburban sprawl, the apostles complained about the immorality in their society. There's always somebody to complain about something, yet things keep marching on at their pace and for the part things to tend to get better with each jump, and even the bad jumps teach us something important and lead to a good jump.
