200 miles to San Diego from Redlands?! Nope. I was raised in Redlands and for a time worked in San Diego...commuted for about 4 months. Took me 1-1/2 hours. :o)

Fresno, just out of curiousity, how old are you? You're obviously not of the generation that says..."Live high..pay later!" Unfortunately, that's the way it is today. I see it everyday here in San Diego.

Actually, we have our plenty of "Live high..pay later" types in Fresno.  In fact, that $400,000 dollar mansion in San Diego the VD's occupy would go for about $250,00 up here in the sticks......with a large lot.  But yeah, who could afford such a house while harvesting tree fruit and grapes for a living! LOL!

The van Dams, from the USENET posts in #52, appear to know what the value of things are. They would also probably tell us that the "best things in life are free", as in free love. But as we all know, sometimes the price for some things is not clearly marked.

Damon van Dam, as evidenced by that post of his in #52, was deeply concerned about the design of the stereo speakers for his and Brenda's love nest --- the same amount of care and attention to home security could have saved them a lot of trouble.

Again in the case of Westerfield we have a dilemma - no visible source of income, twice divorced, saddled with child support payments, lives alone in a huge house, yet can go on wild weekend driving sprees in his motor home and have time and energy to skirt chase the local soccer moms.

Volunteers resume search in desert, East County sites

Day 17 began like many of the others.

In the morning, Damon and Brenda van Dam faced a media throng on the front lawn of their Sabre Springs home. And once again, the couple said there was nothing new in the search for their 7-year-old daughter, Danielle.

Damon van Dam was then off to Borrego Springs for another day of helping volunteers comb the desert for clues about his daughter's whereabouts.

Brenda van Dam went to a volunteer command center, now set up in Poway, to see off search teams as they congregated in 10-person crews, preparing to check areas in Alpine and Jamul. She then spent time with her two sons.

Danielle was last seen Feb. 1, when Damon van Dam tucked her into bed. Since then, the family's routine has become one of agony and anguish.

"I'm just trying to survive," Brenda van Dam said yesterday. "I'm holding out hope my daughter is still alive. If I give that up, it's over."

Damon van Dam also said he was struggling emotionally.

"I'm happy that we haven't found what a lot of people are looking for," he said, alluding to the fact many of those searching are looking for a body.

"At the same time I want to find at least clues, and we haven't seen that yet, but it's still possible," he said.

A neighbor of the van Dams', David Westerfield, remains the focus of the investigation and is under 24-hour police surveillance.

No arrests have been made.

Police last week said an arrest in the case could come soon. Detectives said that among other things, they are waiting for DNA results that are due back from an FBI crime lab in Washington D.C., this week.

Yesterday, a new command post for volunteers was set up at 12411 Poway Road. Weekday hours will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The phone number is (858) 485-4183.

Volunteers have distributed fliers and searched neighborhoods around San Diego and Riverside counties. On Saturday and Sunday, volunteers searched areas in Glamis and Ocotillo.

Yesterday, they searched areas in and around Alpine, Jamul and Borrego Springs. Today, they plan to search other East County sites.

Damon van Dam called for more volunteers.

"We need more people to keep it going," he said before leaving for Borrego Springs.

Organizers have tried to check places that police have not. And they say that even though they have not found a trace of Danielle, they have succeeded in eliminating places where Danielle isn't.

Volunteers who searched the desert this weekend have tried to keep an open mind about the girl's fate. But there was no mistaking a sense of dread.

Searchers were told to look for Danielle's blue pajamas. They were told a girl her age lying in a fetal position would be about the size of a basketball.

The desert became a place of interest because Westerfield told police he visited there the weekend Danielle disappeared.

No one figured the desert search to be easy, given the amount of territory.

Police have not expressed concern that volunteers could damage a possible crime scene and destroy evidence. One detective said desert winds and shifting sands probably did that already.

People continue to come out to help.

Some, such as Poway's Kati-Maria Anderson, had helped in earlier searches near Danielle's home. Anderson went to Borrego Springs on Saturday morning.

"I have a daughter and a son," she said, explaining why she felt the urge to help.

At first I thought the photo was reversed, but you appear to be correct, as judging form the location of her wedding band, the ribbon is pinned to right side.

Here's a related observation - on the KFI 640 John and Ken show, either John or Ken noted that when Damon was giving out the phone number for the search parties on television, he gave out the number with the digits reversed, at which point Brenda gave him a light slap on the cheek and he corrected himself, blaming the error on "his dyslexia".

The Red Ribbon

This is a very old story, that I heard when I was about 7 or 8 years old from my best friends grandfather, and have continued to pass the story on.

Kristi was a very good little girl, she always did well in school, and did exactly what her mommy told her, until one day, her mother told her never to go into the old stable on their ranch. Kristi was soon so curious that she couldn't help it. Kristi went into the stable, and came out with a red ribbon around her neck.

In elementary school, she had a little boyfriend named Jonathan. Kristi always wore the red ribbon, and never took it off. Jonathan asked her why she never took the ribbon off of her neck. All Kristi would say was "Time will come, and I will tell." Then, in high school, Kristi and Jonathan were still together, Jonathan asked again, "Why do you wear the red ribbon around your neck?" Kristi just said " Time will come, and I will tell." For years and years this went on, and Kristi always said the same thing. Finally, Jonathan asked her one more time, "Kristi, why do you wear the red ribbon around your neck?" Kristi then took another red ribbon out of her dresser, and tied it around Jonathan's neck, saying a weird chant. She told him that since he asked so many times, and would not except her answer, that he would live through it. "Watch carefully," she said, " for this will soon become of you." Kristi untied the ribbon, and her head came loose, and rolled on the floor. Jonathan was terrified, He replaced her head, and the ribbon. Kristi was dead, but they all say she died of natural causes. What exactly was going on financially? Could they have been "beaming" the garage playtime all over the net and selling it to voyeurs? Big money there.

What if someone didn't fully appreciate they were being filmed? Payback....right?

Most law enforcement will tell you that all murders and missing persons cases are 80 - 90% "friendly", meaning the vicitm or family knew the perp. In addition, in most cases, it is a parent or sibling. Ruling out the siblings, the parents have to be the prime suspescts, despite the reports of "clearance". Also, the neighbor thing smells very fishy

Rest assured the cops and FBI are interested in the money part. This couple bothered to list all kinds of goofy things in the home sale/rummage sale. They needed money and now all of a sudden have quadrupled the cost of their home and drive a big SUV. Police and Fibbers will take note.

Intuition says those folks are doing something to earn the bigger bucks.

The photos below are of the Van Dam backyard and show the sliding glass door reported to have been found open the morning Danielle was reported missing. Detectives say this is likely to be the way a possible kidnapper may have entered the home.

Freep' observations.....The backyard of the VD's butts up to a concrete block Easement wall.  Hard to tell the
perspective, but photo on right shows a very tall fence/wall.  Secondly, that is a hefty Sliding Door.  It is 2
48" wide pieces.  Note the heavy recessed lock/handle. This is not a shoddy tract home, the features are
quite upgraded.  And that is the only easement/access to the house in the rear, no other doors noted.
