RUSH TO DUB: IT'S GUT CHECK TIME ( Stand up for free speech. Veto this bill Mr. President)
rushlimbaugh ^ | 2/15/2002 | Rush Limbaugh

Today, ladies and gentlemen, you cannot shout "Freedom!" in a crowded election. That's what this phony campaign finance reform bill will mean if it becomes law, which is why there is a huge debate going on inside the Bush White House over whether the president should veto or sign the bill. It appears right now the president is going to sign the thing - and this is what's troubling.

Mr. President, remember the brilliant address you made to the nation explaining our course of action in fighting world terrorism? I say the same kind of approach is called for with this deceptively named campaign finance reform bill. You enjoy an amazing level of trust with the American people. They trust you. They believe in your honesty and integrity. You could explain to them just why this bill is unconstitutional, and why it ought not ever see the light of day. The First Amendment has just been amended here in wanton violation of the Constitution.

Folks, when John McCain was running for president in the Republican primary, I said, "If Russia passed a new law that restricted free speech and competitive elections in the way that the McCain-Feingold bill does, and then claimed it was reform, our state department and human rights groups would denounce it as repression of the Russian people. The New York Times and Washington Post editorial pages would rail against these efforts as anti-Democratic - which they are." This bill is un-American, wrong and against freedom, and I say this knowing that it would make me even more powerful than I am now. Think about that.

President Bush has demonstrated that he has the resolve and the courage and the principle to face down the evil of terrorism. He's shown that he is committed to doing what's right regardless of what the European Union, congressional Democrats or even the media has to say about it. He's doing the right thing. He's following his instincts. Well, let me suggest that this assault on the Bill of Rights requires no less resolve and courage by the president to prevent a severe blow to our liberty.

To me, this is gut-check time, Mr. President. One of the major reasons you were supported over McCain back in the primary season in the year 2000 was your stand against this very bill. Stand up for free speech. Veto this bill.

You're right, Cynicom, and FreeRepublic contributors can't take the truth: Bush will sign "campaign finance reform" in part because the thinks it will help HIM in the 2004 cycle. On this issue, and many others too, GW is playing the Dauphin to the conservatives' Joan of Arc. But the conservatives can't figure it all out -- they have been HAD! AGAIN!

One who voted for this is the "conservative" Zach Wamp, R-TN. Is it too late for someone to file against this Chattanooga representative? TN though usually votes for incumbents, with the exception of James Sasser in 1994.

Good point. I believe the saddest man in America, behind Al Gore, in terms of asking "What the Hell happened?" is Dan Quayle. Which obviously begs the question, whither Quayle?

Rush's position has been that it took libs 50 years , by incrementalism, to get to this point and that we cannot overturn 50 years of government 'largesse" in one fell swoop without alarming people who have come to depend on various programs.

That would be a realistic and acceptable response if what we had seen for the last year was the Bush administration slowly, carefully, incrementally rolling back the regulatory agencies and bureaucracies.

You seen any a'that going on? Please give examples------

Spycatcher, GWB is in danger of becoming merely a clone of GHWB -- like a teapot spouting out steam, but unable to harness the steam into anything productive. Right now, he is merely riding the popularity wave on the basis of the Sept. 11 calamity. What else has he actually done for us? Remind me, as I forget easily just what he has done? Mostly he is simply not clinton, right?

...if the Christians of this country would have been more active...

According to scripture, Peter denied Christ three times in one night. The Protestant mainline in America is out to beat that record every day, while trashing theological conservatives in the process.

How do you know, Robert Paulsen, that SCOTUS will throw out the "worst" of the "campaign finance reform." Who in his right mind would depend on two Reagan appointees to the court: O'Connor and Kennedy. Also one GHWB appointee: David Souter; he's no help to conservatives. I don't think we can "assume" anything but that the Supreme Court is generally the first three letters of the last word in this post typed in quotation marks.

Please explain, SBeck, about what you mean regarding former V.P. Quayle. Do you think the Bushes did him dirty? I DO. I think Quayle would have been better off if he had never heard of GHWB.

One sub-cabinet staffer who ignored the Bush marching orders to ignore this conference was reportedly sent with instructions not to mention that he was part of the Bush organization. Unbelievable. What is your source for this?

It's time to hold Bush's feet to the fire and start getting a little respect.
I agree. I have emailed my President and will also CALL. VETO THIS BILL Mr. President!

The First Amendment has just been amended here in wanton violation of the Constitution.

Rush is shocked, shocked, to see Congress amending the Consitution.

Please!

They do it all the time. At least 90% of what they do is in violation of the letter and/or the spirit of the Constitution. And so are the actions of the President and the Courts.

First Amendment? What about freedom of association? Why does anyone have to associate with people they don't want to associate with? (NB Sometimes I am one of those people that others don't want to associate with.)

Dubya? He wants to fight a war (and I want him to do it). Is it really something he should be doing without a declaration of war from the Congress?

The Courts, and the Senate? Was a trial without witnesses really a Constitutional trial? (Hey Chief Justice! Didn't you write some time ago that "A trial is an attempt to recreate the past through the testimony of witnesses"?)

I could go on.

I think Quayle was jobbed out of a legitimate chance to run for, and win, the Presidency by the Bush juggernaut. Whereas Bush has to rely on his coterie of advisors and teachers, Quayle actually had a few original ideas of his own.

Remind me, as I forget easily just what he has done?

My wife and I received a tax refund check of $600 because of the tax reduction plan of this president.

Send it back to the Congress to take the advertising portion out, sign it and wait for the Supreme Court to overturn.

No: crinkle up this bill into a saliva filled ball, throw the moistened ball at the raised toilet lid, let the wad slowly ouze into the bowl, give it a flush and then wait for the the plumber come so that he can unclog the sow stuffed sewer main.

Veto!

Interesting.

I believe in the right of the religious to practice faith healing. I support that 100%. I believe in the miracles of the Bible. They served a validation purpose for the greatest act of sacrifice of all time.

On a lighter note...I have heard serveral faith healing stories, both in person and on the radio. 99% had to do with one leg being longer than the other. Now, if you stand up you can easily shift your weight in a way to feel that one leg is longer than the other. I just don't see a lot of lopsided people walking around in need of healing. I did hear a story on TV that was somewhat convincing but, with the multitude of phony ones I just thought these very dear people were highly deceived. No great harm done though.

This is not unlike the mass stories I hear from the gay agenda crowd who claim "I just was at the point of suicide..." Well, I think suicide is a horrible tragedy. I don't, however, hear tons of stories about gays who actually committed suicide. I am sure there are some but lets have some stats. How many "thought about it" heteros versus "thought about it" gays? I think the gays would clearly have a lower follow through rate. What's that about? Perhaps it's a handy little political argument? And dare anyone say that don't they look uncompassionate? Clever.

If Rush and the media would keep quiet - we wouldn't have this.....it's a setup for the Dems in the next election along with Enron.

THe Dems have no issues so they invent them with focus groups.

popular? where would that be? beside inside the beltway or inside the newsrooms of the media? Heck even the aclu is against this piece of garbage.

Yes, popular. Half of Congress wouldn't be supporting if it it wasn't popular. Welcome to reality. The bill might be a sham, but it does have support.
