WTC Flag Raising & Memorial Petition
First 120,000 Signatures Bound and Shipped to New York City

February 15, 2002, Emmett, Idaho

The first 120,000 signatures from a petition protesting the originally proposed memorial to firefighters that was an altered depiction of the WTC flag raising on 9-11, and also petitioning the City of New York to only erect a memorial that is not politically motivated and is historically accurate, have been extracted from the petition, printed, bound and sent off to the City of New York.

The petition has progressed far beyond those initial 120,000 signatures and is now approaching 250,000 signatures. All signatures have been gathered in the last four weeks at the petition's PetitionOnline site at:

http://www.petitiononline.com/flgraise

Another set of signatures, this one amounting to 130,000 signatures, will be shipped to New York City as soon as they are prepared. Thereafter, signatures will continue to ship in 125,000 increments as long as necessary..

Addressing this, Mr. Jeff Head, the author of the petition, was quoted as saying,

"Look, many people are wondering why we are continuing the petition when the City of New York has apparently already conceded and indicated that they will not erect the altered statue which changed the physical appearance of the firefighters as well as their ethnicity in an attempt to make a "politically correct" and "ethnically diverse" statement. To this I simply say two things:
  1. First, these politicians, administrators and planners needed look no further than the flag itself that those three firefighters raised to understand that their "diverse" statement had already been made. That flag represents every single one of us Americans, regardless of what ethnicity, regardless of what gender and regardless of what creed. That they failed to see and understand this is very disturbing and clearly struck a raw nerve with most Americans.
  2. Second, the second point in the petition itself makes it clear that NO politically correct or revisionist memorial is acceptable. The City has indicated that it has "other" plans for a memorial. Well, until those plans are announced and it is clear that there is no political or revisionist agenda associated with it, the petition will continue and gather ten million signatures if necessary to bury this idea of political correctness and revisionism once and for all.
I am not against a memorial that pays tribute to all of those who died, suffered, helped, sacrificed and were heroes that day. Just let it be accurate and not politically motivated. To do so desecrates the hallowed ground that "ground zero" represents to all Americans ... and it should not ever be allowed to happen."
Signatures have come in from all over the United States and from many foreign nations. Most of their comments are very articulate and impashioned in their demand to not alter the historical record for any political or revisionist purpose. Some are frustrated, and this is understandable given the nature of the events.

The signatures are going to local New York City firefighters who will arrange for them to be delivered directly to City Hall and the Mayor's office.

Thanks for posting the explaination of why this is still going forward, even though it appears NYC has conceded.

I agree with what you said, and agree this shouldn't rest until the actual memorial is in the ground.

That's a lot of names and comments for someone to read, and that's only half the current list. If the PC crowd refuses to skim through them, I hope they at least take note of the numbers.
