Freepers, it is very important that you act to stop campaign finance "reform." This is a bill that threatens our very political liberty and we need to take a stand to oppose it. It bans political ads, so groups like FR could not pool resources to spread the conservative view on the air, all the while the media get to say whatever they wish with NO CONSEQUENCES. The bill scarily works against all sorts of political common causes in addition to banning soft money. By banning soft money, free speech is stifled. However, unions are not restricted by this bill, which is patently unfair. Contact your congressmen TODAY AND DO IT OVER AND OVER. We need to send a message that we will not support an incumbent protection act.
Call toll free #'s: 1-800-648-3516 and 1-877-762-8762.
Make sure to get your congressional office and the offices of the leadership.
Encourage your congressmen to vote against it due to the unfair advantage it places on unions and the media, as well as the fact it destroys free speech. Encourage them to do all they can to stop others from supporting it as well.
We can not count on a veto from President Bush. He is under lots of pressure from the media and may allow pretty much any bill to pass, quietly working to get Republicans to challenge it in the courts. We need to call the White House as well.
Call 202-456-1414.
Make sure to say that Bush needs to stand firm on this because it will hurt the GOP, hurt America, and destroy our Constitutional principles. Also, state that you believe he is doing a good job and should not cave in to pressure. Furthermore, state you hope that if it passes Congress, he will use his bully pulpit to show the American people why he had to veto the bill. This could include such extreme measures as a presidential address to the nation if necessary. The President should take a firm stand and let Americans know what the bill really is about.
Lastly, we can hope that the courts will take this on and stop the enforcement of this law, but hoping is not an excuse to sit back and do nothing. If you want to see this stopped, make your voice heard. Contact our leaders in Washington...they need to know we are watching their moves.
Freepers, Let's Roll.
Here is today's ACTION ITEM:
ISSUE: As our activists were told two weeks ago, anti-free speech advocates are forcing a vote on the *unconstitutional* Shays-Meehan Campaign Finance bill (H.R. 380).
Columnist George Will called this issue "the most pivotal moment in the history of American freedom" over the past 35 years.
If this bill becomes law, it could SHUT DOWN the Sixty Second Activist Club, and other conservative activist email lists like it.
The Shays-Meehan bill (a virtual twin to the already passed McCain-Feingold Senate bill) would seriously restrict our ability to educate the public on what Members of Congress are doing on issues important to you -- possibly making alerts like this one ILLEGAL.
This bill is now scheduled for a vote THIS WEDNESDAY, Feb. 13. Conservatives need to take action NOW to put a stop to this violation of our FREE SPEECH rights!
ACTION ITEM: First, contact your Representative and make sure he or she knows how you want them to vote. You can email them through the House "Write Your Rep" system at http://www.house.gov/writerep/
Urge them to:
--"OPPOSE SHAYS-MEEHAN" and
--"SUPPORT THE NEY-WYNN SUBSTITUTE BILL"
(pronounced "nay-win") which does not stifle
free speech rights.
Below is a list of House Members that are "sitting on the fence" regarding H.R. 380 and need to hear that Americans are OPPOSED to the unconstitutional Shays-Meehan campaign finance bill. Please phone or fax each one with that message; if you aren't their constituent, it's unlikely they'll pay attention to an email from you.
If you want to call the House of Representatives for FREE, here is a toll free number... When the operator answers just ask for the name of the Member you wish to speak to and you will be connected to the Washington, D.C. office: 1-877-762-8762, a TOLL FREE number checked on Feb. 11, 2002. If all circuits are busy, please try again later, or use the regular toll number of the Representative you're trying to call.
To fax these Members for FREE, go to http://www.tpc.int/sendfax.html and follow the instructions there. You're only allowed to send six free faxes per day, and not every Representative allows receipt of these faxes, so you may need to fax them the regular way.
This list is a little long. Even if you can only contact a FEW of these Representatives, it will make a difference! Thank you!

It's an AP article. My brother-in-law informed me that it was in the Washington Compost yesterday, and today the article appeared in our local rag. I'll try to find the URL and post it here.

How much did the Trial Lawyers, the NEA, and the AFL/CIO donate last year to the DNC? More than any corporation...including union dues unreported to the IRS. The press hides the truth from the American people. They know. Double the deceit.
