He did to the Democrats what Clinton did to the Republicans. He co-opted large amounts of their agendaFinally, someone gets it. Bush's priorities are the war, building up the military, opening up our oil fields and tax cuts. But he was well aware Democrats were lying in wait on all their domestic issues. So he cut them off at the knees tonight. After the speech, Democrats, who have staked out fiscal responsibility as their issue, were sputtering about how we were going to "pay" for all this. The answer is, we won't. Most of that laundry list will be discarded and Bush will get his priorities passed.

And the Dems will be embarrassed into "working together..."

Bush is a great salesman. Agree with the customer (Democrats in this case). Yeah I want everything you want....BUT..we have a war to fight, we need to spend money on the military, drill for oil, cut taxes...then we can get to Head Start...prescription drugs....etc.

Exactly. People were worried about all the programs he mentioned, but they were all what *he* wanted at the Dems expense.

Bush is pulling a Reagan in regards to defense spending. It's great...the Dems cannot refuse and his priorities are right on the money. Go W!

After the speech, Democrats, who have staked out fiscal responsibility as their issue, were sputtering about how we were going to "pay" for all this. The answer is, we won't. Most of that laundry list will be discarded and Bush will get his priorities passed. This raises my spirits somewhat. There were several parts of the speech that I was in complete disagreement with (especially the education reforms). If this is truly his plan, then I am impressed, pleased, and much happier. Thanks!

Andrew did a good job here. Liked the article immensely.
BTW-was ted kennedy drunk? When the camera would pan to him, once I saw him mimicking silly waves and another time I saw him burp, yeah, really big time, not that that means he was drinking...but he just looked on the edge of losing control.

For a guy the media tried so hard to "Quayle", he has shown that he is masterful and actually quite brilliant. I think his calm comes from the fact that he moves steadily and deliberately and knows exactly where he's going. What more could we want at this time in our history?
To: Republic
That's because he really, really needed a drink. Probably had a few before but was getting behind schedule during the speech. Maybe he was bobbing down to suck on a tube from an ankle flask.
To: LarryLied
Exactly! This speech was a direct shot at the Democrats. He co-opted nearly every major issue with the exception of the Environment.
I do wish he had mentioned the stalled Judicial nominees.
Did you notice how little he used 'I'? It was 'We', 'You', 'They'. He looked serious and sincere, not always easy to pull off.
While there are issues I disagree with, it was the right speech for this time.
I liked his comparison between two cultures: that of If it feels good, do it, and Lets Roll. Notice that the sixties have not been replaced by some moralizing or constrictive social conservatism - but by a more neutral, uplifting spirit of action and service, a problem-solving ethic that is practical but also moral, and deeply American. Like making best use of Excess human lives manufactured in Excess.
We're real Hopeful about this new meaning of "IS" we found in all men ARE created equal.

I thought of you during the speech.
I knew you'd be pissed, and I was right.
It must really be a big burr under your saddle that this country is behind George W. Bush as much as they are.
Meanwhile, you're off in the weeds, muttering under your breath.

This faith and its surety in Bush will be enough to keep the social conservatives in his coalition, while allowing him to expand government in small but critical ways and broaden the Republican tent even wider.IOW, Sullivan sees this as as a slick and masterful move by Bush to make the Republican Party safe for gay activism. With Sullivan, it's always about gay rights--the up-text, the subtext, the untext.
Sorry Sullivan, but it won't happen the way you think. When gay activism is allowed in, the religious conservatives will leave Sodom promptly.

Lovely article. His thoughts reflect some of my own. The patriotism he invoked tonight was so indicitive of the Kennedy era, before we lost our innocence, and right after his death, when we saw how quickly our safe little world could change.
In the past few years, I had been disillusioned about this country. Afterall, any nation who would look the other way when it's leader was so obviously corrupt is difficult to be proud of.
A nation who would accept the shannigans of the post election fiasco in Floridia as reasonable and just was beyond my comprehension. And then, adding insult to injury, have the gall to infer that it was President Bush who had tried and succeeded to steal the election, in direct conflict with the facts we saw with our own eyes!
President Bush has restored my faith and pride in my nation under the worst of all circumstances. His speech tonight confirmed my belief that he is the leader for our times, and his being here is not some fluke, but by divine appointment.
The fact that his approval rating is so high despite the best efforts of the leftist media is enough to convince me that something astonishing is happening in this nation. We are finding our souls again, and that is the best news of all.
