Scientific American has sicced the big dogs on Danish statistician Bjorn Lomborg for having the audacity to publish a highly referenced book, "The Skeptical Environmentalist," which argues that global warming and many other environmental "threats" are overblown. What gives?
Why draw so much attention to a book you don't want to sell? Clearly, the editorial boards of Nature and Scientific American, as well as the leadership of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS, the publisher of Science) perceive a big threat if Mr. Lomborg goes unanswered.

The truth is that Mr. Lomborg is behaving like a scientist here, and Mr. Schneider and Scientific American don't like the result. The reason Scientific American is apoplectic about that argument is because it is scientific and convincing. If it convinced the Bush administration to walk away from Kyoto, how long will it be before it convinces Congress to derail the multibillion-dollar gravy train feeding the global warming claque?
Excellent point!
Anyone who is emotionally immature will be "predisposed" to dependency and a willingness to give up freedom in exchange for what they illogically *feel* will be security. They will advocate that for others, too.
Those are the victim mentalities and their advocates that Karl Marx called, "useful idiots".
Karl Marx is the flip side example of the mentalities that are "predisposed to communism". They are the cynical opportunists whose goal is money, power, and control over others. They know they could never obtain their totalitarian goals however, without a lot of "useful idiots".
Both of these above two catagories who are "predisposed to communism" are the base mentalities that make up the base of the DemocRAT party.
Andrew Sullivan wrote about both catagories in his article today [excerpted]: "What Goldberg is trying to say [in his book, "BIAS"] is that everyone else in the country has noticed that these emperors of alleged objectivity [in the leftist media] have no clothes. [But] ... those elite armies of condescension keep marching on, their privates swinging in the breeze." [The Australian | January 14, 2002 | Andrew Sullivan "Liberally inclined by stealth"]
"Scientific American has sicced the big dogs on Danish statistician Bjorn Lomborg for having the audacity to publish a highly referenced book, "The Skeptical Environmentalist," which argues that global warming and many other environmental "threats" are overblown."
As usual ... all hell and panic breaks loose in elitist Marxist circles the minute they see anyone trying to educate their "useful idiots" and show them the truth.
Indeed .... even the "useful idiots", themselves become upset at the idea that anyone would dare to try and educate them in order to save them from themselves. They show up on FR all the time to protest any truth that happens to get out. How embarrassing for them.
I can't seem to get a link to work b/c of the frames crap. Go to the site, click Critique & Replies, then about half way down is the PDF.
I do prefer Julian Simon's 'The Ultimate Resource 2' though. His personality comes through in his optimism about the ability of the human mind to create solutions. Of course, Lomborg was led to the subject by Simon's work - as an opponent - and converted when he tried to refute Simon's argument - and found he couldn't. A great story in itself and anecdotal evidence of Lomborg's commitment to honest scientific inquiry (and he is a real rarity in another sense as well - he's an honest lefty).
I may someday post an article on Simon's presentation about the nuclear waste non-problem.
I second the motion bttt.
"Environmentalists" have wormed their way into education, politics, industry and religion. Under the guise of goodness, they are poisoning our minds and picking our pockets as they systematically work to remove our freedoms.

I don't know anything about how it works or where they're posted, but THIS would get my vote for quote of the day.
Thank you for the article post.
Did you see the post on Yucca Mountain?
I'll put a link up if I can find it again.
DOE Set to Approve Nuclear Storage Facility at Yucca Mountain
But here is what caught my attention - regarding the environment Wackos organizing the resistance to Yucca Mountain which I had not been aware of:
Until they do I'm, going to ignore thier howls about the rise in CO2 levels ...

Repository Opposition
The primary individuals and groups opposing Yucca Mountain are listed in Table 3. Among the wide range of individuals and organizations opposing Yucca Mountain are politicians, the Nevada Nuclear Waste Project Office and its subcontractors, and a variety of environmental and social justice movements.
The length of the Yucca Mountain opposition list may come as a surprise to some, because the anti-nuclear movement is often portrayed as being an unorganized grassroots movement. In reality, the movement is a self-contained and well funded political juggernaut, relying not only on donations from individuals, but also on support from large philanthropic funds.Read tha as the same Enviralists fighting Bjorn Lomborg
Bump!
When will people learn, they will always end up paying for these chains called "we're doing it for your own good?"

Very interesting.
They're guarding their turf. Unfortunately science isn't always based on facts. Some researchers lean toward the side that supports them through grants.
