ABC's Donaldson: Enron Dwarfs Lewinsky and Whitewater

It didn't take very long for reporters to get over the scandal fatigue they claimed they were all suffering after covering the most ethical administration is history for eight years.

But now that there's a Republican in the White House, the investigative juices are flowing once again.

During a radio interview Friday morning ABC newsman Sam Donaldson explained that he was ready to go after the Enron scandal hammer and tong.

How does the energy giant's financial collapse stack up against Bill and Hillary Clinton's Whitewater and Sexgate imbroglios?

"I think this scandal is going to dwarf the the two of them," Donaldson told WABC Radio morning hosts Curtis & Kuby.

"Nobody could understand Whitewater," the newsman explained. And while Americans could understand the Clinton-Lewinsky White House sexcapades, nobody cared, Donaldson insisted.

Ironically, the former White House correspondent was the only reporter who managed to rise above the feigned ennui of his colleagues long enough to ask President Clinton about Juanita Broaddrick's rape accusation, to which Clinton replied, see my lawyer.

Still, the senior ABC newsman sounded on Friday as if he really believed the Enron bankruptcy would be far more intruiging to the public than presidential rape charges and Whitewater lawyers found shot to death in out-of-the-way parks.

Meanwhile on ABC's "Good Morning America," Donaldson's colleague, former Clinton scandal spinmeister George Stephanopoulos, confirmed that their Sunday show "This Week" would be devoted entirely to Enron.

"Nobody could understand Whitewater," the newsman explained

Only because you didn't cover it, until forced to. Then you did your best to make it seem trivial.

No bias here, nothing to see...move along.

It will only be bigger if the media make it bigger. The head of Enron was Clinton's golfing buddy,

Wouldn't it be great if the only stock footage of Lay Fox News had to use was of him with clintoon on the 'links'.;-)

I know, I'm dreaming.

Sam Donaldson wouldn't recognize a scandal if he were sitting under it for most of his adult life.

Just to keep the record straight in terms of 'complex cluster-f**k organizations', Enron couldn't (and didn't) hold a candle to that other spectacularly self-destructed firm, Long-Term Capital Management (RIP, 1998). Enron was certainly larger, speaking in terms of its capital base, but more complex? Not a chance.

Read 'Inventing Money' by Nick Dunbar or 'When Genius Failed' by Roger Lowenstein, and you'll soon come to the same conclusion.

Does anyone have an email address for Sam so we can tell him about the clintoon connection. I'm sure they are not aware of the connection between Ron Brown/clintoon/democrats. Do ya think???

Sammy said that Clinton would be impeached numerous times and was wrong. He is just soooooooo sick of all this patriotism and military talk that he can't stand it. The investigation will vindicate GW and only show that Arthur Anderson was in cahoots with the management.

If Enron would have made too much money there would have been an investigation on windfall profits. Since they went bankrupt there is a Independent/DemonRat Counsel. What happened is that they got caught in the same energy crisis that California got caught in but did not have taxpayers to bail them out. For all the Stalinist DemonRats, it's called the capitalistic system; get over it!

Pray for GW and the Truth

I agree LTC was an incredibly complex company but when one takes a look at all the off-balance sheet financial shenanigans that were going on at Enron I wouldn't be so quick to say LTC was a lot more complex when looking at all of Enron's liabilities as a whole.

On 9/11, God turned on the lights ...and it ain't pretty.

Somebody send Sham Donaldson some clothes.

A GI Joe outfit should do it.

It'll involve both Clintons and Gore, too! Watch for this to sink off the radar once those links are brought forward.

"...then watch the toupee fly. "

Ha Ha! Good point. Though I don't watch him too much. At least, not when I can avoid it. The times I've seen him he just looks pastey-faced.
