This bill is an attempt to gain political favor for Bush and the Republicans by playing the politically correct "education card". Apparantly, they can only see political advantage in caveing on one part of their constituency after the other.
This is yet one more example. Here he is playing the politically correct "diversity card".
Thanks for the post.

It was predicted when he went into pander mode that he would simply end up pushing welfare for the migrantes just like the RATs. At which point - why call him a Republican?
Is it just me or are other people mad that American guys are 13,000 miles away getting shot up while the non-Americans live the good life here at home? Is that what they are over there risking their butts for?
Tell that to American workers who are laid off so that business can hire the illegal slave labor from Mexico.
Lets see, bush increased the funding for clinton's Americorps to gain democrat votes I suppose. Ain't gonna happen.
Now he wants a free lunch for immigrants to buy their votes. That ain't gonna happen either, but the American tax payer gets the shaft again.
It hasn't been that long ago the republicans "talked" about smaller government. Must have been a different bunch of republicans.:)

I've got my 2002 ballot in one hand, and a lighter in the other. If the Republicans think they can win by outbidding the Democrats for the Latino vote, they can do it without me in their party.
I oppose food stamps for citizens, let alone immigrants. The 1996 Welfare Reform Act was one of the great success stories of the last 30 years. I did not vote for Dubya for this kind of feel-good, big gov betrayal, and I won't vote for him or any Republican during his term if this proposal happens.
And I have a big mouth.
Hugh Hewitt, are you listening?
All those people who think immigrants are going to save the Social Security program need to read this, that what really will happen is the taxpayers will be supporting them instead. There should be no welfare or food stamps, the minute you do that they tell all their relatives and friends back home and then they come looking for the same.

Dear President Bush:
I read in the January 9th edition of the New York Times that your administration has proposed to restore food stamps to legal immigrants and that this proposal would cost the federal government $2.1 billion over 10 years.
I am strongly against this! Didn't these people have sponsors that promised to support them?
Despite the fact that over a million Americans were laid off through no fault of their own last year - and the economy still shows no signs of recovery - your administration has chosen not to put any additional money into federal employment and training programs. In fact, Congress took back $110 million earmarked for dislocated workers! So why are you proposing to spend billions of our tax dollars on people who came to the US voluntarily?
I voted for you last year. I spent several cold weekends in front of the Vice President's Mansion protesting on your behalf during the Florida voting scandal. But if you sign a bill giving food stamps or other welfare benefits to immigrants who voluntarily came to this country, I promise that I shall never vote for your or another Republican again.
Sincerely,
Arleigh
