I appreciate your industry background and knowledge. I stated, "These 100 Airline disasters had one thing in common. The decisions of the pilot, at some point, had an effect on the final outcome. Some were unpreventable, yet others were. The pilot who assumes the responsibility has the final authority to remove suspect passengers, or to "park it at the gate" if he is so inclined! Political Correctness has NO PLACE in the cockpit!!"

>>>Perhaps they should adjust their figure of 4500+ killed at the WTC. The current death toll and still missing is around 2935 and falling. If you listen to press releases and the media long enough, you will be taught that actually NO ONE was killed at WTC, that only the buildings fell, nothing else, and that the Muslims are completely innocent [blink, blink] and any damage to the buildings was the fault of the Jews and Christians so it is important to round them up. </sarcasm>

"Perhaps we should let them know of our support so they won't chicken out and give this hot-headed civil servant an extra retirement fund."
Think that is a good idea; also let it be known that this agent cannot have his cake and eat it too; he wants to sue; and he wants his annonymity as well so as to not jeopardize his job.
His name SHOULD be public record; and he should not be on GW's security detail, or anyone elses, until this is resolved. . .
In the meantime, hope they are giving this guy a serious background check; perhaps like he never received to begin with. . .

2, 10, 17, of which I had deep professional involvement, the cockpit crew had NO friggin' awareness of the impending crises, and NO pax had a damn thing to do with it!
Never fails: every time I show FreeRepublic to a house guest, there is a superb demonstration of the freedom to be stupid, rude, and an excellent argument for retroactive birth control!

That's a lot of "lost souls".
If the pilot said the fellow had to get off the plane that's it. No matter why, no questions asked. The pilot should not be worrying about who is on board and the secret service agent should not be making a stink out of this. What if the shoe was on the other foot? And the pilot just out of the blue approaches the president of the United States? And is stopped? Does the secret service agent have to give us all a reason why he stopped him? No! It's his job! If this did happen then should the pilot go to the nearest ambulance chaser and demand apologies and whatnot? Nope!
This politically correct stuff is getting silly.

I saw the presentation by his attorney's today. It wasn't very complimentary to American Airlines.
This is a lifetime employee of government law enforcement services. For the last seven years he has been assigned to the Secret Service. His commendations are numerous. Even in 2000 alone he was sited for numerous commendations.
This Secret Service agent went through three different checkpoints where his credentials were checked and approved by airport authorities. He filled out all forms that he was requested to fill out. He boarded the first plane and was seated. He actually met the captain of the airliner and was approved to be seated.
When mechanical problems forced a transfer to another aircraft, he transfered to that aircraft with no problems. He was also introduced that that plane's captain. He was allowed to board and be seated. He was at his seat when the stewardess told him and several other passengers of middle-eastern heritage to disembark.
After he had diesembarked the second plane, his seatmate stated that a stewardess riffled his belongings, where she found a book on middle eastern history. It was written in English. He neither writes or speaks languages from the middle east.
He was informed that he could not reboard the plane. He offered to give a White House phone number for verification. During this encounter he asked the pilot what the problem was and the pilot told him, "Do not address me directly!"
At no time did the Secret Service agent use profane language, threaten the airline personel or do anything other than follow their requests.
His tickets were purchased by government purchasing agents known to be closely connected to the Secret Service or the White House. The ticket agents could easily see this. So could any of the other airline employees if they would have cared to check.
The Secret Service agent offered to provide a phone number directly to the White House so he could be checked out. The pilot refused to allow it to be used. When used later in the day, the airline was able to verify this agent's identity within five minutes.

A pilot only needs ONE reason. "Because I said so."I am a pilot (private), and you and I and a very few others at FR seem to be the only ones who seem to get it. All the rest is clutter. The pilot in command has the final say in anything regarding the operation of an aircraft, PERIOD. He can be as arbitrary as he wants.
By the way, my wife and I run our household the same way. It seems to work.

Well said! I went to AmericanAirlines.com and wrote the customer relations and commended the pilot for standing up for Safety over Political Correctness and asked AA to stand behind him. I would have linked it but don't know how - hope someone else does.

Oh, brother...don't let the "Death to All Muslims" wing of the Buchananites (Buchanatollahs?) hear you post that stuff...they'll decree a
fatwa on you :o)
I'm biased against American, having been the recipient of a claim of being "very hostile" when I asked to speak to a AMR ticket agent's supervisor.

I can realize your point, but here is more evidence why PILOTS have
every right to be "on edge" about the "cargo" on board!

National Sneakers Bomber May Provide Missing Link to Flight 800 News Analysis by Ron Rizzo
Dec 28, 2001
The FBI is no longer saying the sneakers of Richard Reid were packed with C-4, rather with PETN. This information could be significant to any reopening of the closed investigation of TWA Flight 800.
PETN is a common explosive agent with military and mining applications. It was found on the wing and on a seat of Flight 800, according to a Newsday story from August 1996.
Military explosive C-4 was used in the attack on the USS Cole Oct. 2000. But PETN (pentaerythritol tetranitrate) was found in small quantities at both crash sites of Pan Am Flight 103 at Lockerbie, in 1988; and on seats fished from the water, of TWA Flight 800. Flight 800 blew up off Long Island July of 1996. There were no survivors.
Witnesses said they saw a missile arcing from the ground make contact with the airliner. PETN was both on the outside and inside of the aircraft; possibly a belt and suspenders approach to terror.
The presence of PETN on Flight 800 seat material is an NTSB published finding. But the governments official stand is this military explosive had no role in the explosion of the aircraft. It could have been on the pants of a hard rock miner, states an NTSB investigator. Richard Saferstein, retired head of the The New Jersey State Police Laboratory said in Newsday, the presence of PETN is evidence of a bomb, about 99.99% evidence of a bomb.
Despite several obstinate, contrary witness accounts; and reams of contradictory data, the US government maintains Flight 800 was not brought down by a terrorist attack or by an errant US missile, another theory. A logical cause has never been officially established.
What is now known about terror suspect Richard Reid is that he worshipped in the same mosque at Brixton, UK as did Zacarias Moussaoui, 33, charged as the 20th hijacker, in connection with the Sept. 11 attacks.
According to the Times of London, AL-Qaeda prisoners promptly recognized a photograph of Reid circulated among them by US intelligence agents in the past few days. Reid was discovered missing from his London home several months ago when his mother, Leslie, searched for him at the mosque where he is known as Abdel Rahim.
Though a pattern emerges possibly tying together a long series of events, the NTSB maintains the same stance taken during the Clinton Administration that rejects state sponsorship, favoring explanations from a virtual shrug on Flight 800 to a loose network of independent groups. Experts say the likelihood of state sponsorship increases with the increased sophistication of the methods, whether explosives or envelopes of miraculous re-aerosolizing anthrax.
Reid, who served prison time for a string of street crimes, including muggings, told authorities he converted to Islam five years ago in prison. From fingerprints provided by the FBI Reids identity was confirmed by UK police.
Reid is described as a test, a man incapable of blowing up an airliner. This comes from the chairman of Reids London mosque, Abdul Haqq Baker, who told the Times of London, He [Reid] was a testing ground. If he had succeeded, they would know this is a mechanism that works. If the plane had exploded there would have been very little trace of how that happened. Is Imam Baker suggesting the futility of the FBI in such investigations? Is this British Muslim referring to the fact that had Reid been successful, the passenger list would not contain a telltale Muslim name, at least not his?
Had he been successful, would the NTSB be as inconclusive about American Airlines Flight 63 as they are about Flight 800? Im reminded of Bakers casual, unscientific statement. How ironically true it might apply to Flight 800.
The FBI said the sneaker bombs were so cunningly made, Reid probably had an accomplice. Is that accomplice Iraq? Unless Reid confesses, the FBI will never be able to prove an Iraqi connection. The FBIs investigative techniques were developed when those who were investigated didnt know a molecule from a freckle, Bonnie and Clyde, Al Capone. It took years to capture Unibomber Ted Kaczinsky. Imagine trying to pin the goods on a foreign state as sophisticated as the agency investigating it.
And as David Kaczinsky fingered his brother, Ted, Iraqi defector Hussein Kamil fingered his father-in- law, Saddam. (The Clinton Administration did nothing to Iraq and provided no protection for Kamil who was later gunned down.)
The US is pointing fingers at French authorities who allowed Reid onto the Miami flight with no baggage, a violation of US protocol. Our safety depends on the integrity of low- level officials in societies that long ago rejected any matrix of moral decision-making.
After extensive questioning by French police, Reid missed his first flight and was put up as a guest of American Airlines in a $500 a night Paris hotel. What does this mean? American Airlines was afraid of Reid. There is massive legal interference. Our adversary has learned to wage war against us using our legal system against us. Attacks will continue until we change procedures mandated by courts.
A flight attendant smelled the smoke from a burning match, saw Reid trying to light a wire extending from his shoe tongue, and an American airplane was saved. An FBI agent said had Reid a butane lighter, instead of a match, he would have succeeded. A billion dollar investigation would have been launched, PETN would have been found in trace amounts brought aboard by another miner. And that Anglo Imams words would be prophetic. Another plane would be lost because a French official felt no personal obligation to follow instructions.
In a report by the Boston Globe, igniting PETN requires an electrical charge or a blasting cap, but FBI tests isolated an added substance such as lead azide that allows detonation by flame. It was not stated what that substance was.
Reid is being held without bail at the Plymouth County, Massachusetts House of Correction pending a psychological examination. Hes under suicide watch. He failed his god. One can only wonder at his reaction when he was read his Miranda rights.
Reid is not the first to attempt to conceal explosives in shoes. Abdul Hakim Murad said in a statement in 1995 that a small amount of plastic explosive could be hidden in shoes because airport x-ray machines dont examine that low. Those same x-ray machines are still in service. Murad was convicted in 1995 of attempting to blow up a jetliner.
The convicted mastermind behind the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, Ramzi Yousef, was convicted of separate charges of plotting to blow up jetliners. His plan included sneaker bombs.

Liberals and my children. They both don't quite know what to do when faced with the reality that in some situations there is an ultimate authority who can justifyably act on what other may call whimsy or a Racist / Obnoxious post.

Now why would you go and bring in a bunch of facts and reason to a perfectly good racist/propaganda thread. /sarcasm, for the sarcasm impaired

At no time did the Secret Service agent use profane language, threaten the airline personel or do anything other than follow their requests.
American Airlines and the pilot say different. I wasn't there so it's one side against the other at this point. I do however want the pilot to have the final say in ALL situations because I or my family may be on that flight. Unfortunately some males of middle-eastern decent are going to be uncomforable right now, and sometimes even unfairly. However I would always want the airline/pilot to err on the side of caution and yes that overrides hurting someone's feelings. Political correctness kills and September 11th is proof positive of that.
