pilots are not trained to make sound judgements in cases like these

Not correct.

From the beginning of their intitial flight training, airman are trained to make decisions that error on the side of caution regardless of the circumstances that force a command decision.

The Secret Service is charged with handling identity fraud. I reported a case of it which was a fairly hefty one. They did nothing whatsoever. Too busy busting Denny's and AA, I guess.

Given the way the regulations read I don't think that the ss guy has a case, even if the final report shows poor judgement on the part of the captain. He might get an apology but that's about all.

"...However I would always want the airline/pilot to err on the side of caution and yes that overrides hurting someone's feelings..."

The SS are the modern incarnation of the Praetorian Guard.

They have to be the toughest, most focussed and loyal personal army on the planet. Whiners need not apply.

If Abdul's 'fee-wings' have been 'hurt' he needs to hit the bricks.

Having just landed from Mars, I see that you are all discussing an incident that is not mentioned in the original post, nor is it linked in any subsequent posts. Please (some, any Earthling) enlighten this poor, benighted Martian, before FDA has me deported back whence I came.

A word to the wise - you do not have to shout at us to make your point. And the "100 Reasons" have nothing to do with the decision of the pilot to keep the SS guy off his flight - proper checking of the SS guy's credentials could have made this whole thing a non story. The pilot, for some reason, apparently wanted the controversy. It seems from subsequent news accounts of this incident that the pilot had an "up your nose" attitude toward the SS guy because he was of Arabic descent, and this cause a response of some measured billigerant indignation on the part of the SS guy that any of us who value our freedoms would likely have expressed (the pilot reportedly told him that it was not his problem, it was an American Airlines problem). To that many of us would likely have responded "B$" And by the way, I have a lot of non-respect for PC, and a high regard for the need for profiling. But deliver your shouts, using BOLD and COLORS somewhere else.

One of the quickest ways to get at the truth is to watch the subsequent news accounts from ABCCBSCNNNBC.

They are continually trying to paint 43 into a corner to weaken his administration. Their coverage this evening was especially slanted to the PC.

This points to the "right" being on the side of AA. The media already knows the facts and they know that 43 will eventually have to respond to the agent's grandstanding.

When 43 eventually supports the AA version, even timidly, the press will have a field day and another little victory (undermining the Bush administration)

...in my opinion, if the flight took place and arrived safely at it's original destination, then the captain made ALL the right decisions. Leave racism, prejudice and any other subject besides SAFETY out of this!....

Okay.

You wouldn't mind if we checked the ethnicity of other persons refused a flight since 9/11, then?

..the sneaker bomber was a living, breathing BRIT...

"I became a Muslim because I was fed up with racial discrimination," Robin told reporters. "I suffered in the streets, even though I was born in London. About 10 years ago, I met up with Richard after not seeing him for a few years. He was a little bit downhearted. I suggested to him, 'Why don't you become a Muslim; they treated me all right.'

"I don't feel guilty about encouraging him to be a Muslim because the sort of Islam I encountered wasn't about blowing up planes - it was about loving mankind."

Robin Reid, father of 'shoe bomber' Richard Reid

I agree with you on that. Hopefully this guy is innocent and just a jerk. But who wants a hothead with a gun mad at you while you're trying to fly an airliner? That alone should be just cause to bar someone from a flight.

Even if he's totally innocent, he's demonstrably unfit by temperament to be a SS agent and despite the efforts of some disruptors to make this a racism issue, that would hold regardless of his ethnic background.

That having been said, I refuse to acquiesce to the race baiters. I note that this agent was hired during the fat of the Clinton era, same time that Billyboy was directing the FBI not to investigate terrorism by Arabs, for political reasons.

Now I wonder--just how thorough was this jerkwater's background check, when we know that many White House employees had NO background check at all?

SS agents are too well trained...

except when they're not.

BTW, how about when "America's Finest" falsely arrested innocent protestors at a Clinton rally in 1996? How did you like their professionalism then?

Considering how slack security was when this guy was assigned to the S.S., I see no reason at all to believe he is a paragon of professionalism. he may just be a Clintonoid affirmative action hack.

...some measured billigerent(sic) indignation.

Just what the hell is THAT supposed to mean, when you're talking about a guy with a gun, whose papers are screwed up, who after boarding, unaccountably deposits an overnight bag on your plane and then leaves, then insists on boarding your airliner full of people anyway, and yes looks like a mideasterner?

Just how much "measured billigerence" do you think a pilot ought to put up with in light of these facts?

That's rhetorical, son--don't bother answering--already had my fill of obtuseness for one night.

Here's something that should be posted over the ticket counters...

WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE SERVICE TO ANYONE!

After all, why should anyone take for granted passage on any flight...isn't it a privilege and not a RIGHT.

His name SHOULD be public record

I agree, as should his picture. After all, the "agent's" lawyers claim to know that the pilot's motivation was based solely on appearance. It's time to ante up and show us the rest of the story.
