Armed citizens can make it more difficult for attackers (John Lott)
Detroit News ^ | 12/30 | John R Lott Jr

With the FBI issuing alerts, what should American's do to protect themselves? We have all heard that we should be observant and report strange events to the police. In the last weeks, other things have been added to the list, such as be careful of letters with powdery substances. Yet, one option has not been encouraged. News articles mention the large increase in gun sales that have taken place since Sept. 11, but fail to mention the benefits and belittle those who buy the guns. We could learn something about responding to terrorism from Israel, and encourage more ordinary, responsible citizens to carry guns.

Why is it that ONCE in the history of Canada there was a shootout in a school and kids were killed but that in our beloved country it happens EVERY year.

It's the reduction in morality. Kicking god out of the classroom and replacing him with a free condom handout. The school shootings are a recent phenomena. We didn't have these school shootings around 50 or so years ago when there were much fewer gun control laws. Indeed, in those days, particularly in rural areas, kids actually brought their guns to school for after school hunting or target shooting. The more gun control laws, the more gun violence followed, including school shootings.

Should we accept that quietly? Are they casualties of freedom?

To the contrary. They are the casualties of tyranny and an immoral society.

Is that the price we have to pay? We look like a bunch of morons promoting people every people carrying guns..

They don't look like morons to me.

Makes no sense and it gives a false sense of security...

To the contrary. It gives a true sense of security. You get a false sense of security if you don't carry a gun. Do cops have a false sense of security?

"my point of view on guns make me automatically a Liberal?"

Well you may not consider yourself a liberal, but your attitude toward guns is certainly typical of current "liberal mantra".

They have been doing that for years!!!! Before us! You want liberals, they are! In a city like Montreal, they have about 50 murders a year!!!!.... (2.5 millions people).....

The end result for us was increased violence. When you don't say "NO" to kids, when you don't teach them right from wrong....the results are obvious.

"Oh yeah...that's what I want... a bunch of moron firing guns in airplanes at the first sign of trouble."

How did you get your panties in a twist?

I am guessing that you need some lessons in conservatism and responsible citizenship. If I am capable of choosing the leadership of this country, my state, and my community via the ballot box, then why am I not also responsible for determining how I choose to defend myself and my family from evil doers, even at 30,000 feet? If I choose to carry a concealed weapon then rest assured that I will act responsibly in utilizing it, just as millions of my fellow citizens do each and every year.

I imagine that you are one of those people who feel that the "morons" need to be protected from themselves. Maybe you would find things more to your liking over at DU?

I worked part-time in my Dad's liquor store in Brooklyn and there was a gun under the counter and everyone knew it. He also had a big evil looking German Shepard that would meet everyone who walked through the door, sniff him or her, and then sit next to them at the counter. Liquor stores in the area were constantly being hit by robberies but not his. A deterrent? You bet.

Murder is high in the US because of gangs and drug dealers fighting over territory. The US murder rate is not high because of the availablity of guns. Criminals will have guns no matter what laws are passed. Criminals do not follow the law, that's why they're criminals. All the more reason to allow law abiding citizens to carry.

Oh yeah...that's what I want... a bunch of moron firing guns in airplanes at the first sign of trouble.

From the article:

Just as in Israel, the type of person who is willing to go through the process to get a permit has proven to be extremely responsible. Permits are rarely revoked for any reason, usually very trivial violations, with permit holders losing their permits at only tenths or hundredths of one percent.

Nor are permit holders vigilantes. Up to 98 percent of defensive gun uses simply involve people brandishing their weapon. It is only as a last resort that people fire their weapon and even most of firings are merely warning shots.

Moron
