CRAWFORD, Texas –– President Bush on Thursday granted permanent normal trade status to China, calling it "a final step in normalizing U.S.-China trade relations."
Bush also terminated the 1974 Jackson-Vanik law that withholds normal trade relations with communist states that restrict emigration.
My foot.
China gets 2 billion dollars PLUS from the USA in commerce EACH WEEK.
That's over 100 billion a year.

Yeah, there's some truth to that.

CHINA BLASTS GERTZ OVER AL-QAIDA ARMS REPORT

The Chinese government once again strongly objected to a report by the WASHINGTON TIMES's Bill Gertz -- a report which revealed China provided weapons to al-Qaida after the September 11 terror attacks!

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue called the explosive Gertz report "groundless" and made with "ulterior motives".
PEOPLE'S DAILY:
"China has actively participated in the international cooperation of combating terrorism and rendered support and assistance to the U.S. side since the September 11 incident, she said, adding that the facts are obvious to all.
"She pointed out that a limited number of people in the United States have tried to use the rumor to defame China and impede the improvement of Sino-U.S. relations. 'Their ulterior motives are doomed to failure,' she said."
Gertz on Thursday stood by his report, which quoted a senior U.S. official.
"A week after the terrorist attack, the ruling Taliban and the al-Qaeda fighters embedded among them, received a shipment of Chinese-made SA-7 missiles," revealed Gertz and Rowan Scarborough in their weekly Inside the Ring report.

Hell, our economy is easily thirty times that, if not more. Look at spending patterns of any Socialist nation and tell me that large influxes of cash has saved a single one of 'em? Socialism blatantly encourages, via its "core beliefs," the vast waste of money. Therefore, I'm betting that they're spending more on (a) military equipment, (b) nuclear research, (c) improving their spy agencies, and then (d) supporting "social" programs, than we give them in a year.
Add it up. There's no way 100 billion dollars a year can sustain their economy for any rational period of time, if they spend 200 billion on "essentials"...

I think that by bringing China into the capitalist world we will turn them against their oppressive government in time. I hope the Bush team knows the appropriate steps to take that will empower Chinese citizens without empowering their government.
Just because Dubya has apparently found himself in the position that leaves him no choice but to grant them status (I assume), does not mean that we must all rush out tomorrow and by stuff made by the Chinese.
If it says "Made in China", move along. Please!
I'm a free-trader, who's leery of trading with China. I think free trade is more likely to bring reform in China than otherwise. It could also bite us bad, however. It's one of the most difficult issues for me to figure out, but I gotta go with the libertarian instincts and lean towards free trade.

Until the attritude of the American consumer changes (buy cheap and lots of it), you might as well go with the flow.
Ethics seems to have little priority between the pocket book and merchandise.
