NOW got federal tax dollars: Feminist group received anti-tobacco money during Clinton years

Tammy Bruce, the former chairman of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization of Women, charged yesterday that NOW received some $750,000 in federal funds during the Clinton administration for anti-smoking activism.

Bruce made the charge on WorldNetDaily columnist Michael Medved's nationally syndicated radio show in response to a question about why NOW didn't show much concern over allegations of sexual harassment by President Clinton.

"We don't have proof that this money was linked to Monica Lewinsky and Paula Jones, in the sense of hush money," she said. "But there is certainly the appearance of impropriety."

Bruce said the transfers of taxpayer dollars by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control represented the first time NOW had received federal money.

"I have to tell you I haven't seen any anti-tobacco efforts by NOW that seem to be worth three-quarters of a million dollars," Bruce said.

One official with the group, who requested anonymity, confirmed that NOW had received the federal funding for its "Love Your Body" anti-smoking campaign, but she said she didn't know if it was the first time the organization had received federal money.

"What it did was fund that program, which has been very successful," she said, adding the program was 4 years old.

The "'Love Your Body' campaign focuses on negative images of women and girls in the media," said the spokeswoman. "It looked at smoking ads, which used weight and image as a ploy to get women and girls to smoke."

Bruce is the author of "The New Thought Police," a critical examination of the way some feminists and leftists have sought to suppress free speech.

Concerned Women for America needs donations badly since Sept 11 drained contributions away from them.
Send this conservative anti-NOW group a buck or two if you can afford it.

Another reason to lower taxes.

Kudos to the Dulles chapter of NOW, which split from the national leadership and condemned Clinton.

Boos to NOW, which still isn't interested in Juanita Broadrick, who accused Clinton of rape.

why NOW didn't show much concern over allegations of sexual harassment by President Clinton.

We knew there had to be a reason "NOW" kept supporting IT, nearly a million is a pretty good bribe.

Indeed - NOW received payment and rendered a service. A victory for women everywhere. They've come a long way, baby.

Witches are horrid and abomoniable excuses for human beings, but associating them with NOW, that's way to harsh.

This story was covered tonight on Fox News Chicago. They put the "NOW Foundation" vs "NOW, Inc." distinction in a very bad light.
