Thanks for the history, Jim. I didn't realize that the big dogs were after you in late '97 and early '98. Maybe that's why I found this web site around that time, as a lurker.
Keep up the great work, and never, never, never give in!

Good job.

Tnanks for the explanation and recap, for those of us who weren't around when it all began.

We need Free Republic to stay involved, informed and invested in the legislative and political process Peach, that is perfectly worded.
Thank you Jim for this history post and thanks that we are able to "bookmark" here.

I'm a relative old-timer. I've heard this tune a million times; I've seen the rebuttals; I've carefully analyzed all the positions.
I fall on your side of the fence. The persecution you've endured is selective in its 'enforcement' and is incorrect in its application. You will win in practice, your creation will go on and you will always be at its helm. You go, Jim. In the meantime I'll help in any way I can. Rock on, bud.

Brian stated that we (Brian was a poster too) on Free Republic are operating squarely within our rights under the U.S. Constitution and the fair use provisions of Copyright Law. He volunteered his pro bono legal services to Free Republic and me personally and vowed to never, ever surrender, and that we would continue fighting the good fight until victory! Jim,
Did you not understand the risk you were taking by taking such an agressive posture on full-text posting and fair use? Did Brian not explain this to you?
Just wondering.

A continue "the good fight" bump! Bump too for your newest profession author...can't wait for your new release. When's the book signing?
To: Z2
Don't think I needed to be informed by Brian or anyone else of the risk. You do not go around bucking the status quo without taking some risk. I risked it all long before I ever heard of Brian Buckley. I was advised, however, that what we are doing on FR is perfectly legal and that we should win, even if we have go all the way to the Supreme Court. This was declared by my attorney many times in interviews, panel discussions, and even in his own postings on this website. Hell, my attorney even posted full text articles here himself. Yes, I am fully aware of the risk and so is he.

Thanks for taking the time to do this, Jim. Where do we go from here?

Jim,
Thanks for the history. I'm still new and a lurker most of the time but jeez..I never knew I was a dissident !
Did the "dissidents" over at DU or FreeDem.com ever get the same cease and desist letter?
Thanks for the great site!

Thanks Jim for posting these wonderful vanities as of late. Having found FR in late '98 and joining in '99, I quickly become nestalgic reading these.

"...I'm a relative old-timer. .."You newbies are always trying to claim something, Laz. If you really want to know how old you are, rest your cursor on your name in any of your replies, and read the number on the line at the bottom, on the right. Subtract 'one', and that's how many people registered before you.
'Course, since so many of those early registers have left, I guess you are an old-timer, so welcome!.....I mean, glad you're still here!
Gad, it's dull here tonite! I couldn't even make that crap interesting. Stay well, pal......FRegards
