MORE than 100 signatories of the Geneva Convention gathered in Switzerland yesterday to reprimand Israel for "indiscriminate and disproportionate violence" against Palestinian civilians in the occupied territories.

The 114 states - including Britain and the rest of the European Union - issued a joint declaration urging Israel to abide by international laws enshrined in the 1949 accord seeking to protect civilians in wartime or under military occupation.

It was the first such declaration by signatory states since the Convention was signed in 1949, as a similar session was adjourned after 17 minutes in July 1999. Israel and its close allies, the United States and Australia - which are also signatories of the Convention - boycotted the session.

The declaration expressed deep concern about a "deterioration of the humanitarian situation" in Palestinian areas, condemned Jewish settlements there as "illegal" and urged Israel to refrain from "grave breaches" such as "unlawful deportation", "wilful killing" and "tor- ture".

Yaakov Levy, the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, criticised the declaration as "one-sided".

He said it contained "unsubstantiated allegations" and should have condemned acts of terrorism against Israel.

Are there 114 countries in this world that are morally qualified to condemn Israel? Really? Could anyone list that many?

A more correct headline would read "114 counties kow-tow to the PC crowd by issuing meaningless statement criticizing right of Israel to defend itself."

Seems Britain and the European Union are included in the 114.

Two things to consider about this.

First, does it really matter--world public opinion, that is? No sovereign nation should care what some international busybody organization passes in its proceedings about them. As far as I'm concerned, being "condemned" by the world is a badge of honor.

Second, as far as this quote: Israel and its close allies, the United States and Australia - which are also signatories of the Convention - boycotted the session, I learned something new: when did Israel wrap its tentacles around the Aussies too? Do they have an Australian Israeli Public Affairs Committee to match the US's AIPAC?

Was this story from June 12th, or December 6th. June 12th would seem to make more sense. No I take that back, it wouldn't make any more sense, but it would be less brazen. However the source, the London Telegraph, does seem to use the dd/mm/yy format so I expect it was yesterday 6 Dec. 114 more irrelavent countries in the world I guess.
