Berry said the White House's moves were "about muzzling us and it's scary

"Scary." One of the touchy-feely crowd's favorite words. Infantile.

Look for the GOP to retake the Senate and pick up 10+ seats in the House, and then hopefully, dump Lott and start to play hardball..

Look for Jeffords to try and extend his term in the senate, borrowing a page from Frances the Talking Mule, by claiming that since he changed parties, a full six-year term starts on the day he bolted.

Berry hasn't won...Bush is giving her enough rope to hang herself. Calm down and watch. ;o)

I'm calm, thanks, but I'm afraid I'm going to be saying I-told-you-so on this one.

Typical!!!! She thinks she is ABOVE the law... that the LAWS don't apply to her. And Conyers and Nadler agree. Go figure!!!!

She is a very hateful prejudiced black woman. She does NOT serve ANYONE well, but mostly the Black Community!!! If I had the time, I'd do a search on her to prove my points. But others will have to do it today. (I have grandchildren coming over so the parents can Christmas shop) I can assure you, I've read of this woman for a few years. She is pathetic!!!!

Assuming successive 6-year terms, her current 4th term would be up in January '04, Bush's last year in office.

Guess again. She says that she was appointed as chair of the commission January 25 (or so) 1999, so her term is not up until about a week after the next president is sworn in. If Bush is also the next president, I don't think she will be reappointed.

You raise a good point. I wonder if they need 4 or 5 members for a quorum. If 4, the 3 GOPers plus the new person could hold meetings without Berry. If 5 are needed, there is no quorum IF the 3 GOPer's walk out, since there are only 4 "legitimate" members left.

Exactly! And now, by participating in a bogus meeting with an illegal member with an expired term, have they endorsed her crazy view? Why didn't the Bush administration have an immediate plan of action after her letter was published? Does the boundless hubris (or adject stupidity) of the 'Rats really surprise them anymore? Are they being sneaky or foolish?

I read her term will expire several days after Dubya's first term in office.

Actually, there is some controversy over that too. Seems her appointment expires just days before Bush's last day of his first term, but she submitted paperwork showing that her appointment expires a day or two AFTER the last day of Bush's first term. Of course, if he wins reelection then it doesnt matter. I will try to find more info on that. I remember hearing Boortz talk about it.

Enacting law here: click "section 1975"

But note that by her interpretation of the law, one would resonably claim the appointment (according to Clinton for a term of less than 6 years) would not be legal in the first place.

Rather than use the chairwoman's interpretation to rule the previous woman's term illegal had been all along, a court would respect the Presidents' use of their power IMHO.

Nope, not humiliation. He is well aware of what is going on, and I think is to be commended for taking the position and sitting quietly while the Republicans tried to get Berry to see reason. All was recorded as proof of her malfeasance.

The administration had no idea what Berry was capable of when they first engaged her on this appointment and they should have. No amount of incriminating film has prevented this cretin from having her way. She beat a former President to retain her appointment, remember? Our best hope is that she meets an early demise, which is little hope at all since she's the precisely the kind of monster that gave rise to the vampire legends -they refuse to die.

I doubt W is even "working" this thing right now. Most likely his staff are the ones doing the manuevering. Hell, the guy is heading up a war, the little pyscho on this commission is small time. If some earlier posts were correct, The Prez selects who is the chairman. The Prez selects who is the Vice Chairman. If I am correct, I read last night that without the Justice Department behind hte commission, it is essentially pointless. So, let them bark as loud as they like and spit out reports as much as they like. And after a few months, relieve this idjit from her duties as chair anything.

Meanwhile, moving quielty through the courts would be the best bet. I have no doubt that this woman is teamed up with some lib whacko's attempting to spring a PR trap. Time will tell though huh?

So, who controls the paychecks for this commission? An order ought to be sent to whoever issues the checks to stop the check of the person leaving the board and start the check of the person Bush appointed.

Clinton's letter to the board member stating the date her appointment would end should be enough to settle this matter.

Wonderful letter. I simply wrote asking where I might find a copy of the amendment to the law which Conyers and Nadler site. I'll give them a few hours before I begin a squeaky wheel campaign in the hopes of seeing only her elbows and ass in view on national TV as the Marshalls escort her out.

A cross between "wishful thinking" and a reasonable political analysis ( I hope)..the House is easier...the redistricting will result in at least a 10 seat pickup....the Senate should go GOP by +3, at least....most of the seats up are Dems..and the national Dem leadership is so far out of touch with the rest of the country...Cleland in GA, Johnson in SD, are two prime examples....they cannot run on the positions of the national party,,and don't forget, there's a good chance that as we role into the 2002 campaign, we;ll be engaged in a war somewhere.....and Bush will be out on the stump....with the 90%+ popularity rating...
