It must have its own Reformation, its own Enlightenment,

It cannot: it has no Savior............

He has revealed that Islam is neither a religion of peace, nor tolerance.

Bull. He has merely revealed that he and his followers are men of neither peace nor tolerance. And they will reap what they have sown.

Brings to mind an interesting question:

Was Afghanistan in Dar al-Islam? For now it surely has pulled by main strength into Dar al-Harb.

Keep playing, al-Quaeda.

There's little chance for a reformation in Islam.
One of it's premisses is that Mohammad was the last prophet and there could be no other.

Only an authoratative figure would have the ability to challange or change the strictures of Islam.

(Guess they'll have to wait 'til the Mahdi appears)

"The legacy of hatred was deepened by the Christian Crusades, seemingly fresh memories for today's Muslims."

The Crusades were an outgrowth of Islamic intolerance towards Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land. Crusaders gave the followers of the Mad Prophet everything they deserved. Too bad they were too few to successfully scour the Holy Land of this Islamic plague.

Maybe one day those idiots will figure out that jihad means mass sucide for Muslims?

I doubt it. They follow a false prophet so they may not be too bright.

It must have its own Reformation, its own Enlightenment, or, failing that, it too shall fail.... I do not believe we have been witness to the revival and resurgence of Islam. I believe we are witness to its death throes.
From this thread:
The Northern Alliance administration, now in control of Kabul, on Friday lifted all religious restrictions imposed by the hardline Taliban in Afghanistan, saying the dark years are over.

Religious affairs minister Ataullha symbolically chose a 532-year-old Hindu temple in Kabul on a Friday, the Muslim holy day, to make the announcement.

"The dark years have gone. We are ready to give all rights to every religion," he said, blaming past atrocities on the Taliban and the Pakistani government which supported it.

It may very well end up with hasbin getting what he wants, a war between the west and Isam. If that does happen a word of warning Be careful what you ask for....you just might get it. One thing you can say about the west is we are very very good at war.

Islam is an aberrant political ideology. Its theological foundation is borrowed and its political activism is simply one formed in Mohamed's mind as he traveled around the middle east. It is an imperialistic political ideology cloaked in terms of religion. False prophet, false ideology, and false adherrants. An objective reading of the koran is a lot like reading mao's little red book. Those outside the middle east who are moved by it are simply haters of western individualism and capitalism and its predominant religious bases.

What America needs, and what PBS was ostensibly created to provide, is 24/7 translations of the poison that pours out in Muslim countries toward all unbelievers.
It is difficult to imagine the sustained and creative forms of hate.
Unfortunately, for the dimmer amongst up, the inability to imagine that level of evil is explanation for refusing to believe it exists.

You forget: Satan is its founder, Satan directs its every step. It is not a human or purely earthly institution, if it were it would be less evil.

It has no conscience, does not even look horizontally except to kill the Others, and says one will have peace WITH GOD, not EVER with one's fellow man, the latter will be bloody strife forever.

It cannot reform, cannot become enlightened, cannot be anything other than a throwback to dark, satanic ages.

And on a related note: This thread, titled, "Church bells lead to Egypt clashes"

Four people, including a policeman, have been injured in a village in southern Egypt following clashes between Christians and Muslims that broke out at the inauguration of a church... The trouble is reported to have broken out after church bells rang out - in defiance of warnings by Muslims that they should remain silent.

No time or inclination to critique the entire article, just to make one point:

He has revealed that Islam is neither a religion of peace, nor tolerance.

OBL, his organization and their actions say nothing about what Islam inherently is, or is not. During the Middle Ages, Islam-ruled Spain was a haven for Jews, as they faced no persecution there from the Moslem rulers, unlike many places in Christiandom. Until fairly recent times, Islam has a pretty good record of getting on well with Jews and their Orthodox Christian neighbors, whom they regarded as 'people of the book'. Things look pretty grim right now, but I will venture the unpopular assertion that Islam can, and will, return to its more amicable past ways. Right now there are Afghan Muslims fighting and dying alongside our troops, and the central gov't of Afghanistan probably isn't strong enough to compel anyone to fight, so I have to believe they are volunteers. There is opposition to this extreme 'Islamic' agenda in every Moslem country, as events (I am hoping and praying) will soon prove. I simply don't believe that most Moslems want an unending, suicidal war with the West. To those here on FR who repeatedly post comments to the effect that we must 'kill them all', erase Islam from the face of the earth, etc. -- you should be aware that they comprise about 1/7 of the world's population. Are you folks serious?
