Look, Keone's getting better and he didn't even have to kill anyone to do it.

The truth is starkly revealed: embryonic stem-cell "harvesting" is about morally-stunted degenerates pursuing their selfish whims, not medical science.

So far, Cord Blood Registry has collected about 30,000 samples from families willing to pay a $1,300 flat fee and $95 a year to analyze and privately store their baby's cord blood.

Thanks for the post. It is something I have raised in this forum many times before. I have had 3 kids born since learning of the potential for cord blood. Unfortunately, we could not afford to pay to donate it. So much potential, yet millions of dollars are going to embryonic stem cell research instead of here. I even notified the White House of this during the stem cell debate but had no response. Instead of research money going to pay for the expense of harvesting cord blood, the hospitals incenerate it as biohazard or the parents have to pay out of their own pocket to make the donation. What a wasted opportunity all for the sake of finding a silver lining to abortion.

I saw this program and was pleased that the host pointed out that while stem cell research from embryos was so controversial this was an outstanding breakthrough. I like the idea of an umbilical cord blood bank to be used by anyone in need. This needs more publicity......perhaps Tommy Thompson can make it a point to bring this up.

The amazing part of this story is the source: CBS News, not a prolife publication. There's a "feedback" window on the CBSNews.com website. Let's FREEP the heck out of them (in a positive sort of way).

Thank you.
The embryonic stem cell debate was never about life - it was always about death.

Just a question, but if that blood in the cord is so valuable, wouldn't it make sense to let it continue to pulse into the baby after birth (what many midwives and natural birth advocates do)??

Think about it -- nobody knows for sure what all is in it! What if we would all be healthier had this been allowed at birth?

Good grief! This was done back in 1998, and we're just hearing about it? It's amazing what that did! Gave me goosebumps. Wow.

More evidence of how much God has blessed America, and Americans. We should do our best to be deeply grateful, and conduct our lives with dignity and honor. Let us not ruin what we have been given, and with it, the opportunity this could afford to the rest of the suffering world, IMHO.

Is this the story that 60 Minutes plugged? I only caught a commercial about a stem-cell cure, but it didn't say whether or not it was derived from embryonic cells.

Adult Stem Cells Completely Cure Sickle Cell Patient

10 - 1 says this will not be seen on any of the TV news programs.

Science is pretty damn cool, huh?

There is a whole world of possibility for adult stem cells, however, pluripotent stem cells, such a blood cell precursors, are not totipotent like a blastocyst stem cell. Basically, this means that the blood precursor does NOT have the ability to turn into EVERY cell type, but can turn in many. The blastocyst cell, on the other hand, is still in at a stage where it can differentiate into any cell type, and this is why they are important.

This point is clearly illustrated by this case. Sickle cell anemia occurs because of a genetic substitution where the codon for a valine is switched for a glutimate. This causes the Hb molecule to be bend. Unfortunately, this also causes the sickled appearance of the cells. If one could get an ALREADY differentiated blood cell procursor and placed it in the right place, as in this case, then of course healthy blood cells could be made. However, this differentiated blood precursor cell from the embilical cord, could not make, a neural cell because it is too far differentiated, and this is why science is still looking at 128 day or less stem cells.

stem cells may one day be able

I own stock in a couple of these companies. It didn't cost much, but who knows; I may one day be able to sell said stock at a profit. Could happen.

"Or that if they had a problem, I would be guaranteed that there would be enough donors and somebody would match them, that would be perfectly reasonable. But I don't think anybody has that crystal ball."

What donors? This is cord blood. If it isn't harvested, it's just thrown away. Harvesting it is not an invasive procedure or an intrusion on property rights (who stole my umbilical?). If people want to keep it themselves, fine. If they don't... just let the blood banks have it. Why on earth don't the blood banks just set about harvesting and storing as much as is necessary?

Excellent article. For once there is solid proof that adult stem cells do work. This happy story should silence those who claim that only embryonic stem cells deliver the desired results.

I'm glad CBS is the source of the article....but why didn't this story make headline news when the President was struggling with his decision concerning embryonic stem cell research?

Oh, uh, sorry.....lost my head. Such a story would not have underscored the leftist mindset of pro-choice. If they were to support adult stem cell research, they would be, in a round about way, condemning the killing of embryos. That would logically lead to condemning the killing of "fetuses" by pro-choice. How could I be so naive? /sarcasm off
