Ever since the 1960s, America has been ruled by a cruel, senseless and immature bully. Like its schoolyard counterpart, this bully has relied on threats, intimidation and the occasional bout of violence to pursue his agenda. And like the victims of schoolyard bullying, most of us have caved in and let the bully have his or her way, "so we wouldn't get hurt."
On Sept. 11, America tasted the fruits of the political left's incessant bullying: Traitors in our midst demonstrated that they would be satisfied only if America ceased to exist. Subsequent news reports have vindicated my post-attack speculation that both the White House and the Capitol building were also targets. A planeload of brave people died in Pennsylvania to prevent the one, and by God's grace hijackers never got off the ground in a Canadian plane to implement the other. The Sept. 11 attacks were intended to destroy America's government, military command structure, and financial capacity. They couldn't have happened without the left's complicity.
I can hear the agonized cries of closet leftists now: "This is an outrage! How can you possibly lay these attacks at our doorstep?"
I'll tell you how.
You Balkanized America. You split it into a thousand warring tribes, whose true loyalty is to the homeland they left. You made us a nation of hyphenated last-names. When the Irish and German and Swedish immigrants arrived here in the last great wave of immigrants, they weren't picked up at the dock by a victim's-rights advocate, signed up on public welfare, armed with legal demands that their children be schooled in their native ethnic tongue and encouraged to thumb their noses at American cultural values.
No, the previous wave of immigrants took the jobs nobody else wanted, worked long, hard hours under dangerous conditions with low pay and struggled to learn the English language. Why? So they could fit into this wonderful new nation they now called home. On Sept. 11, we saw the result of their assimilation into American culture: Immigrant offspring were among the firemen and police who paused to pray – then entered burning buildings to rescue fellow citizens – knowing full well they might never come out.
The left has twisted the meaning of citizenship from a responsibility to a right. Buttressed by their bullying tactics, this wave of immigrants has behaved quite differently from the last. They have built miniature idols to their old homelands inside our city walls. They have abused our generosity in providing welfare benefits to the needy, instead milking the system like the cash cow the left has made it. In the name of tolerance, they've even demanded that we neglect or tear down our own culture, so they won't feel uncomfortable about theirs.
The result of the left's constant bullying has been a new wave of immigrants, many illegal, who believe that America owes them and their families a living, that we should abandon our culture and religion to accommodate theirs, and that if we don't, an endless supply of trial lawyers will dismantle our laws through the courts and "get them their rights."
And we mustn't infringe the poor dears' rights – even if it means we have to surrender our own. Looking for Arab terrorists boarding airliners? Better strip-search that Swedish grandmother flying home for Thanksgiving too, or it's racial profiling! You want to deport individuals who entered this country illegally? Not without the full measure of constitutional protections promised citizens, including trial by jury! Want to require proof of citizenship before voting in an election? That might intimidate illegal immigrants! Better we should have a lopsided election decided by people with no right to vote!
What the left has forgotten – and what the rest of America is waking up to – is that the Constitution and our nation's laws are in place to protect citizens of this nation. Our laws do not exist to protect individuals entering this nation illegally from being expelled, and they certainly do not protect foreign soldiers and terrorists intent on destroying our lives, and our property and our government!
So to those on the left who have a problem with military trials for terrorists, I say, "Bang the gavel, Mr. Ashcroft!" It's about time. I'm tired of sacrificing the rights my ancestors died to protect so closet leftists can assuage their guilt from being born rich and free. You don't build up the rest of the world by tearing down America.
And they did it as a consequence of principle, too. That principle is equality: no culture is "superior" to any other culture, therefore "assimilation" (which "privileges" the culture being assimilated into) is morally wrong.
