Gore's Hatchet Man 1 Year Ago Now Chief of SBC (FREEP SW Bell, Cingular Wirless, Ameritech, etc)

One year ago, William Daley was the head of the freedom-hating campaign of one Al Gore. Now he has been REWARDED with the Presidency of SBC Communications, one of the country's biggest companies. The article announcing Daley's ascendancy follows. I, for one, think I'll be cutting any ties I have to the subsidiaries of SBC. How dare they bring to their leadership a man who was responsible for the crisis this nation was plunged into last November?? Here is the article:

SAN ANTONIO (Dow Jones)--SBC Communications Inc. on Monday named William M. Daley, commerce secretary in the Clinton administration and chairman of Al Gore's unsuccessful campaign for the U.S. presidency, to the position of president.

The appointment, effective Dec. 1, comes as SBC is struggling to overcome regulatory obstacles to enter new long-distance markets.

Daley, most recently vice chairman of the private equity investment firm Evercore Capital Partners LP, will be responsible for strategic planning, regulatory matters, government initiatives, and external and international affairs.

Daley, 53, will report to Chairman and Chief Executive Edward E. Whitacre Jr.

Whitacre said the appointment signals the importance of governmental matters to the company's ability to increase revenue, compete effectively and meet customers' needs.

As one of the Baby Bells formed from the 1984 breakup of AT&T Corp. (T, news, msgs), SBC is barred from providing long-distance service to its local customers. But the 1996 Telecommunications Act allows the Bells to get in the long-distance market in a state once they show their local markets are open to competition.

Just Friday, the Federal Communications Commission approved SBC's application to provide long-distance service to its local customers in Missouri and Arkansas.

The FCC approval gives SBC long-distance business in six states of its 13- state region. But it didn't come without a struggle. SBC had withdrawn its original Missouri application last June after FCC Chairman Michael Powell signaled he wouldn't support it. SBC refiled the application in August, and added Arkansas. Decisions for Nevada and California are expected in mid-2002.

There have been other problems with regulators. In October, the FCC proposed a $2.5 million fine against SBC for providing sloppy, incorrect data used to assess its openness to competition in Kansas and Oklahoma.

"Strategic planning, international affairs and government relations are more important than ever to growing shareowner value," Whitacre said Monday in a statement. "Bill's unique blend of business and governmental experience, combined with his strong leadership and management abilities will serve SBC well in today's environment," he added.

As secretary of the Commerce Department from January 1997 to June 2000, Daley led the successful drive to gain congressional approval of China's entry into the World Trade Organization. He also led the government's efforts to promote the growth of electronic commerce.

In 1993, as special counsel to Clinton, Daley coordinated the campaign to pass the North American Free Trade Agreement.

SBC, the nation's second-largest local-phone carrier after Verizon Communications (VZ, news, msgs), late last month reported a 31% drop in third-quarter net income and said it planned to cut "several thousand" jobs and reduce capital spending by 20% during 2002 because of the tough economic climate.

SBC employs 216,000 people and serves more than 60 million customers. DOW JONES NEWS 11-19-01 09:14 AM

What would hurt them as much, would be to switch phone companies. I believe there is now competition in many areas that SBC covers for local phone service.

Yes, I know the story. Do you infer from it that the boy will never do anything but throw starfish back into the ocean?

Hee, hee hee, good comeback!

I don't agree though that the guy is not a criminal. I think it is against the law to try and rig a federal election. I believe with all that is in me that is exactly what he did.

Maybe you need to get a grip...... just because you disagree with someone doesn't make him "the enemy

Normally I'd agree with you, but we're talking about liberals. Liberals stand against everything that I believe in, personal responsibility, morality and ethical behavior for openers. So yes, they are most certainly my enemies.

Do you really believe that? All liberals are immoral and unethical? And what is the reverse of that, all conservatives are perfect upstanding citizens? That's complete fantasy and you know it. Hatred accomplishes nothing. Whatever happened to keeping an open mind, christian compassion, and leading by example?
