Mullah Omar reportedly holing up in northern Afghan town Kunduz

TEHRAN, Nov. 15 Kyodo - Supreme Taliban leader Mohammed Omar has holed up in Kunduz, the only major city held by the Taliban in northern Afghanistan, and has been using local residents as human shield against rebel attacks, Iran's news agency IRNA said Thursday, quoting a senior Iranian diplomat in Tajikistan.

IRNA said the Iranian diplomat, the minister at the Iranian Embassy in Tajikistan, gave no details about Omar's whereabouts but assured that the information came from a reliable source. Tajikistan borders Afghanistan to the south.

IRNA said 30,000 Taliban fighters are defending Kunduz and have barred local citizens from leaving the city, using them as ''human shield'' against attacks by the Northern Alliance.

Mulla Omar is in Kunduz, reliable informed sources

Dushanbe, Nov 15, IRNA -- Taliban leader Mulla Mohammad Omar is in the northern Kunduz province, the deputy ambassador of the Afghanistan Islamic government to Tajikistan Mohyuddin Mahdi told IRNA here Thursday citing reliable informed sources.

He said he was unaware of further details, but reiterated the authenticity of the news could be vouchsafed.

Taliban's fierce resistance in the province in the face of the United Islamic Front's besiege of the region has further given rise to speculations that Omar could be in Kunduz, Mahdi said.

According to reports, Taliban have gathered 30,000 of their fighters in Kunduz and are preventing residents from leaving the province, using them as human shields against probable attacks of by the alliance or the US.

They have so far shrugged off calls to to turn themselves to the alliance forces.

Taliban fighters are making a last stand in the besieged city, where thousands of the United Front soldiers are reported preparing for an assault.

If I am not mistaken, each B-52 will carry either 12 2,500lb bombs, or 6 5,000lb bombs. Either way, that is almost the weight of a daisy cutter without the p-zazz! Also, if these are cluster bombs, they are full of little bomblets and can do one heck of a lot of damage.

Daisy cutters are too big for the B-52's. They are carried in C-130 cargo planes and pushed out the back to drop.

The NA are preparing to cleanse their land of the Arab's, et. al. who are currently running the Taliban. Somehow, after 25 years of war, and invasions from Russia and in effect, Pakistan, I think the Afghan's may really mean it when they talk about a Democratic government. Yes, I know the history of Afghanistan. They'd rather fight than do about anything else. But that land has been through hell, and after living in the world of Medieval Islam, I think many are seeing the light, courtesy of the USAF, USMC, USN, and USA.

My understanding of the people who are in Kunduz is that they are trying to negotiate a free-passage out of the country. They want to give up but the NA is ready to go in there and kill them all. Somehow this does not sound like a big threat to me, regardless of how many of them there are.

When Rumsfeld and Gen. Franks briefed today, they both said they believed these forces numbered 2 or 3 thousand--it is the media claiming 20 or 30 thousand

These are the ones that double crossed the Northern Alliance by pretending to surrender, then firing on them once they where in the city causing heavy casualties. The NA are really ticked off about this and if they get to them I feel like allah is going to crash from " virgin overload".

During the last days of the gulf war, they were starting to load the B-52's with the 2000 lb. laser guided bombs that were normally carried by the F117's. The F117's carried two bombs, but I read that the B52 carried either 20 or 40 (fuzzy memory).

The B52's didn't have the ability to control the bombs, only the capability to carry them and drop them one at a time. Each B-52 was to be accompanied by an F117 which did the actual targeting and control of the bombs. The F117's which did a vast majority of the precision bombing during the gulf war would in effect have their strength multiplied by 20.

The war was halted before they were launched. The B52 has an acknowledged capacity of approximately 70,000 Lb.s of bombs and missles. The following site has some more info. B-52
