I switched my browser to Internet Explorer yesterday because I was tired of my Netscape freezing up my computer. I have a couple questions to get this "tweeked" like I want it.
Is there a mail notification? My netscape had a little thing on the bottom tool bar that would check for new mail every 5 or 10 minutes, this thing also kept my internet connection on.
Also, how do I set it up to keep the connection alive if I'm reading a long article or something?
Any help would be appreciated. I'm sure I'll think of more after I post this!
thanks
I'm using Netscape 6.2 and so far, on Windoze 2000, it works great. I like the password management, and cookie managment features. But if you don't want to go with 6, then 4.78 is the one.
First, you don't have to right-click to open a new window. Ctrl-N opens a new instance of IE that is an exact clone of the window you're in, down to the history.
Second, hold down shift when you click on a link, and it opens it in a new window.

LOL
I have trouble when I have 3 open at once, start to forget what the hell I'm looking for!
Y'know, the Wheaties tasted a little strange now that you mention it. And that damned cat was on the table!
Your welcome. Now go get the security patches from Microsoft!
You should be aware that Outlook has some faults. Consider the following article a warning!
Researchers Shocked to Finally Find Virus That Email App Doesn't Like
Atlanta, Ga. - Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Symantec's AntiVirus Research Center today confirmed that foot-and-mouth disease cannot be spread by Microsoft's Outlook email application, believed to be the first time the program has ever failed to propagate a major virus. "Frankly, we've never heard of a virus that couldn't spread through Microsoft Outlook, so our findings were, to say the least, unexpected," said Clive Sarnow, director of the CDC's infectious disease unit. The study was immediately hailed by British officials, who said it will save millions of pounds and thousands of man hours. "Up until now we have, quite naturally, assumed that both foot-and-mouth and mad cow were spread by Microsoft Outlook," said Nick Brown, Britain's Agriculture Minister. "By eliminating it, we can focus our resources elsewhere." However, researchers in the Netherlands, where foot-and-mouth has recently appeared, said they are not yet prepared to disqualify Outlook, which has been the progenitor of viruses such as "I Love You," "Bubbleboy," "Anna Kournikova," and "Naked Wife," to name but a few. Said Nils Overmars, director of the Molecular Virology Lab at Leiden University: "It's not that we don't trust the research, it's just that as scientists, we are trained to be skeptical of any finding that flies in the face of established truth. And this one flies in the face like a blind drunk sparrow."
Executives at Microsoft, meanwhile, were equally skeptical, insisting that Outlook's patented Virus Transfer Protocol (VTP) has proven virtually pervious to any virus. The company, however, will issue a free VTP patch if it turns out the application is not vulnerable to foot-and-mouth. Such an admission would be embarrassing for the software giant, but Symantec virologist Ariel Kologne insisted that no one is more humiliated by the study than she is. "Only last week, I had a reporter ask if the foot-and-mouth virus spreads through Microsoft Outlook, and I told him, 'Doesn't everything?'" she recalled. "Who would've thought?"
I generally open up a second window on the Drudge Report which seems to refresh itself constantly. This keeps me up to date on the news as well. Other times I open a window on Africam or other similarly self refreshing content. I've walked away from my 'puter for hours and it doesn't time out on me.
If you find out how to do it purely with IE let me know.
Somebody's confused but not knak.
It's Opinions/Questions
That "/" always means "and" OR "or"...
Sadly, I started using Eudora again a few months ago because of this. I MUCH prefer Outlook, but it's just too wide open security-wise. Not worth the risk, for me anyway.
That's what I do, your mileage may vary. We are talking about Windows here, after all. {;-)
The problem with Outlook Express, as opposed to Netscape's built-in mail program, is that, to get similar behavior, you would have to leave it running all the time -- another large program running in addition to IE. These small mail checker utilties allow you to NOT run Outlook Express all the time.
It is very important that you set your Outlook Express/Tools/Options/Security to use Internet Explorer's "Restricted" security settings. And, for that to be of value, you must set IE's/Tools/InternetOptions/Security/Restricted/Custom to Disable every single goo-gah feature listed. (Not sure, but these may now be default settings.)
And, to feel a bit more secure in using Outlook Express, you should have a virus checker set to scan all incoming documents. NOT taking these precautions with OE can be hazardous to your computer's health.
Seems like I tried that before, but it just wouldn't stick.
