I need internet explorer help

I switched my browser to Internet Explorer yesterday because I was tired of my Netscape freezing up my computer. I have a couple questions to get this "tweeked" like I want it.
Is there a mail notification? My netscape had a little thing on the bottom tool bar that would check for new mail every 5 or 10 minutes, this thing also kept my internet connection on.
Also, how do I set it up to keep the connection alive if I'm reading a long article or something?
Any help would be appreciated. I'm sure I'll think of more after I post this!
thanks

If you add Instant Messanger you get a mail notification with it.

I've noticed with Explorer, if you begin to post on FR and go back and then forward again, whatever you wrote is deleted -- unlike in Netscape.

IE does not have a built-in mail program. You may have also installed Outlook Express (the basic MS mail program). If you did also install Outlook Express, you can configure it to "ding" on mail arrivals.

IMHO, Netscape's biggest liability, is that it tries to be everything to everybody. I too, had numerous system hangs with Netscape. Now I use Outlook express (which ONLY does email) and Internet Explorer (which ONLY browses websites). Netscape is a creation that attempts to do both seamlessly, and the result is 99% right on the money. But it's that darn 1% of the time you hang the system and have to re-boot that is the irritating part. Outlook Express, which is free at microsoft's update page (www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com) is among several things that need to be checked and updated periodically.
No problems since I left Netscape, and made the switch. I now run the 2 applications (Outlook Express and Internet Explorer) and no longer have any problems whatsoever.

You can also configure the length of time between each new check for mail.

Thanks, I do have outlook express and I thought I told it to notify me of incoming mail, but have yet to hear it. I'll try again.

Use Microsoft's Outlook express and set that up for e mail. It does have a notifier flag. Make sure you set it up as your primary mail server.

Perhaps the little caption for this area of Free Republic confused you,
OPINIONS and Questions.
Perhaps you'd like to edit your post with an opinion of IE. BTW, Netscape was probably Netscape Communicator, whereas with IE you also need a mail reader. Like Outlook Express. A handy little glitch in Microsoft's code will let you know when some pimply faced rodent of a teenage hacker has slipped a nasty virus, worm or trojan horse onto you boot sector. Your 'puter will fail/crash/succumb to the evil designs of the youthfully exuberant scamp as his malicious lines of code streak by the defenseless IE/Outlook Express.

Many options are undrer the menu: Tools/Internet Options.
If you figure out how to make it disconnect after the last application closes, tell me. this is one of those on-again-off-again features. It looks random to me.
A number of internet providers, such as MSN, have their own dialer. I have rooted out all of these and use the windows dialer.

"Thanks, I do have outlook express and I thought I told it to notify me of incoming mail, but have yet to hear it. I'll try again.+" I had this same problem. Turns out that it won't notify you of incoming e-mail unless the computer is turned on and the Outlook program is running. Typical ripoff Microsoft app.

been there, done that....now Im back. Netscape 6 is still buggy. Mozilla works ok but all in all Netscape 4.78 is the one for me. It does everything you need and does it quite well.
Over the last week of trying them all out everytime I would try to work thru a problem with IE, TechTV would have a rerun of the microsoft judgement and I would start up again. See!! They are doing it on purpose!!!
WHy must you torment me this way!!??!?!?

I love Netcaptor, all kinds of options and remembers the IE windows you had open when it starts up the next time!
I run with 10 to 30 windows open using Netcaptor! Have 256Meg of RAM.

This pissed me off too so I found a program that checks for my email on my yahoo account, then opens outlook express and then outlook express displays my yahoo mail.Works pretty slick without outlook being open all the time. See post 11.
