Chelsea joins the hecklers at peace rally
The Times (U.K.) ^ | 11/10/2001 | GLEN OWEN

CHELSEA CLINTON was among a group of American students which disrupted an anti-war meeting in Oxford, it was revealed last night.

Frustrated at anti-American feeling, the daughter of the former President arrived at the 500-strong meeting in Oxford Town Hall with a dozen friends who heckled speakers.

Miss Clinton, a postgraduate student in international relations at University College, Oxford, her father’s alma mater, has confessed that she is feeling isolated and threatened by the mood she has detected at the university. She found it difficult encountering “anti-American feeling” from peace demonstrators.

As soon as last Thursday’s meeting, organised by the Oxford Stop the War Coalition, began, members of her mostly American group shouted patriotic slogans from the back. Speakers were prevented from continuing after other young Americans approached them and unfurled a Stars and Stripes flag.

Chris Harman, editor of the Socialist Worker, said: “When the group turned up I thought, oh no, we’re going to have some rugby-type fracas, but luckily it was nothing like that.” The flag-bearers were eventually sent back to their seats by a 76-year-old American woman called Barbara, an Oxford resident.

Katy Beinart, a student CND member who spoke at the meeting, said that Miss Clinton had arrived “making a lot of noise”.

When John Haylett, editor of the Morning Star, began to argue that the media had failed to consider the effects of the bombing on Afghan civilians, Miss Clinton and her friends called out that he should remember the victims of the terrorist attacks on New York. Mr Haylett responded that such meetings were the only way to put an alternative viewpoint to that portrayed in the media.

Miss Clinton left with her Secret Service bodyguards shortly afterwards, stopping to buy a copy of the Morning Star from a vendor, and making “yet more noise”, according to Ms Beinart. “It was a shame that Chelsea Clinton felt the need to interrupt a peaceful discussion with what I felt were inappropriate comments,” she said.

Speakers at the meeting, including the MP Jeremy Corbyn, said yesterday that Miss Clinton took their comments too personally.

I think [she probably with Mom & Dad's coaching] is laying a little groundwork for her political future. You don't think she's going to settle for a common everyday job after tasteing the power and perks of political life do you?

She like Bill & Hill is watching the polls and they see how the numbers are running for GW and the war effort. I could be wrong and hope I am for her sake. But I know who her parents are and the example they set for her. I also remember the contempt they all showed for the military personel and secret service and the less than human manner in which they treated them. Everthing the Clintons do is first and foremost about and for themselves.

Regarding all the negativity concerning Chelsea Clinton - Her looks and the sincerity of her statements...

As to her looks - I don't think she's bad looking.

As to her statements - PLease remember that she is still relatively young yet - as a matter of fact, I was quite liberal and considered myself a Democrat when I was her age (early twenties) - so maybe there is hope for her yet...

So why don't we just for a moment pretend that we are actually the good Christians that some of us say we are, and say a prayer for her. - She, like the rest of us, did not choose her parents.

I'm sure she is being buffeted on all sides by strongly conflicting views - At least give God a chance to show her the way of truth and light.

Maybe she'll turn out to be just like her parents... And maybe she won't... Only time will tell...

Ronnie, Give the kid a break. Even dupes and dolts should be praised for doing something right. She apparently is not entirely a chip of the old blocks. Go Chelsea!

I'm gonna puke. How much of this Chelsea swill are we going have shoved down our throats?!

It's going to happen every day and in every way until the professionals behind this strategy finally manage to form a "public persona" for her so she has some "history" behind her when she runs for her mama's Senate seat.

Miss Clinton and her friends called out that he should remember the victims of the terrorist attacks on New York.

This part seems so un-Clinton-like. Even when Bill and Hillary are campaigning, they only think about themselves.....Bill is actually suggesting they deserved to be killed, Hillary is just thinking of how to get revenge on the firemen who booed her. They must be about ready to yank Chelsea out of Oxford for being too patriotic and not joining in on the anti-American protests.

If Chelsea really supported the US, I'm glad but it's possible this whole story could be made up.

Hey. Thomas Sowell used to be an angry Marxist.

Now look at him. He's the greatest!!

Yet, in the case of a Clinton, it is more likely that this is all some sort of PR spin arranged by Momma.
