Sheriff's Deputy Shot; Suspect Killed

A sheriff's deputy in eastern Arizona is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot while trying to arrest a suspect. The suspect was in turn shot and killed.

The confrontation occurred in the town of Eager around midnight.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Officer Steve Volden says the Apache County sheriff's deputy was shot twice in the head. He was airlifted to a Phoenix hospital.

His name wasn't immediately released.

Volden says the deputy was among several officers who were attempting to arrest 58-year-old William Milton Cooper of Eagar.

Volden says Cooper had been armed with a handgun. He says details of the shooting will be released later at a news conference. DPS was called in to investigating the shooting.

I’ve covered several news stories about crazy old cranks who live alone in the woods or desert, who threaten local people with guns. Many of them wind up dead, and they wound up dead long before there was a “militia” movement in this country. This type of stuff goes back 450 years in this country. This is an old, old problem among some grumpy depressed old hermits who think they can pull their guns on local farmers and ranchers and order people around at gunpoint.

This shooting didn’t have anything at all to do with income tax. No feds were involved. These were local law enforcement people protecting the neighbors and public from a local crackpot who wanted to shoot someone before he died.

Especially if you are a gun-owning patriot

The guy was not a “patriot”. Patriots don’t aim guns at neighbors and order them around. Crackpots do. Face up to it... your “hero” was a crank.

With the government cover-ups we know about, even if the "authorities" were to tell the truth how would we know it's not just another cover-up?

If you can’t tell the difference between the federal ATF and the local Apache County Arizona boys, then you need to travel around the country and get acquainted with people who live in different areas.

I mean how can you really KNOW anymore?

If you want to know, just ask me.

Maybe he did point a gun at someone's face. Maybe he had good reason to and maybe not. We will never know for sure.

Well, hell, I don’t know for sure that you aren’t Adolf Hitler, but I’ve got a pretty good idea that you’re not. I’ll go with the local sheriff’s deputies rather than the crackpot. When I need help fast, I’m still going to call the Sheriff’s Office at 911, not the local crackpot self-appointed “militia” old-fart cranks.

He didn't pay his taxes but he didn't sell us out to China.

No, he just pointed a gun in his neighbor’s face. If someone does that to me, I’ll call the Sheriff and help them set up an ambush for the jackass.

He didn't have a strong connection to a murdered woman, he wasn't responsible for the drowning of a woman. He doesn't have a "body count list", etc.

We don’t know that. He pointed the gun at a neighbor and shot a deputy in the head. Out here in the West, that is enough to send a guy to the local Boot Hill.

What he was...was an example. An example of what happens if you do not bow down to the state.

HE WAS A DANGEROUS HERMIT CRANK. The feds didn’t get him, the locals did. A lot of the locals might have agreed with what he said on the radio about the feds, but they couldn’t let him go around threatening local citizens with guns. THIS IS THE WEST.

I can't help believing it would never have happened if they would have left the man alone.

They can’t leave a man like that alone when he threatens his neighbors with guns, because he might wind up shooting someone. This happens all the time out here in New Mexico and Arizona. The local Sheriffs and deputies ALWAYS respond to threats against citizens by crackpots. That’s what we pay them for. A hundred and twenty years ago, a lynch mob would have strung him up and burned down his house.

Who's surprised?

Interesting thread. The simple truth is that the gene pool has just been upgraded. Just too bad a cop had to get shot doing it.

Army enlisted to help police combat crime

David Leppard

MILITARY officers are being recruited to help police in the fight against drug barons, people-smuggling, the sex trade and organised crime networks. M

For the first time the military will work alongside British police officers on the National Crime Squad, which targets organised crime.

They are also helping immigration officers at Dover to investigate smuggling routes used by gangs cashing in on the trade in illegal migrants.

Senior Ministry of Defence officers disclosed the growing involvement of the armed service "green machine" in tackling organised crime at a conference in London last week.

They suggested that information gleaned from military satellites over Afghanistan could even help police and customs to stop the flow of heroin to Britain. They say that, while police and customs act after the drugs have entered the country, the military can disrupt the drug gangs "upstream" - inside the countries where they are based.

A senior officer said: "The Ministry of Defence has put its toe into the big sea of organised crime. We are gradually getting more and more drawn into this. When it comes to intelligence overseas, we do have a role."

Senior officers point out that for 30 years the army has helped the RUC to combat the involvement of IRA and other terrorists in the drug trade, organised fraud and smuggling in Northern Ireland. In Kosovo troops have helped to intercept drugs on mule supply routes from Macedonia.

"We are not there to do the job of law enforcement. But what we can do is assist law enforcement to do their jobs," said one officer.

It has emerged that John Abbott, one of Britain's most senior police officers, met Europe's most senior military commanders at Nato to discuss ways of working more closely on the crime front.

Abbott, who is director-general of the National Criminal Intelligence Service, met Nato commanders at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers in Europe (Shape) in Mons, Belgium, earlier this year. There were further talks involving the MoD in Naples.

Military officials said the main focus of the talks was on improving the fight against drugs and people-smuggling gangs centred in the Balkans.

Sources said military officials were also investigating the role of Albanian gangs in the London sex trade. They say Albanians now run 70% of the trade after smuggling hundreds of prostitutes into Britain.

From January, military officers specialising in computer hacking will also be working on the National Crime Squad.

John Wadham, director of Liberty, the civil liberties group, said: "The role of the military is to protect us from external threats and they should have no role in policing. That's why we have a proper system in place for the accountability of police to local police authorities, the courts and the police complaints system

Damn...the lynch mob deputies forgot to fire the house! Must be nice enough for someone to want to buy it. And it isn't even 125 yrs ago.
I'm just being a smart a** Fred...don't get bent!

I'd like to see hard evidence that that happened. This guy was killed on his own property by 17 Bubbas. The cover story doesn't make sense. He was set up and ambushed.

Some will say he had it coming, others will say that it's good he took one down going.

A shame one of your adjectives wasn't competent. Or did you simply mean to imply that?

Well, I’ll tell you what I’ll do. The next time we have a local crank threatening his neighbors with guns out here in the West, I’ll make sure the Sheriff in the local jurisdiction calls you for advice. You can charge a $5 a day consultant’s fee, you can come out here and handle the armed crackpot all by yourself. We’ll be sure to call on you the next time we are in danger. Send me your phone number and I’ll program it right into my phone, right next to 911.

I guess we should have called you when the Cortez, Colorado militia crackpots were murdering people, stealing vehicles, and ravaging the countryside a few years ago. Colorado had to call out the National Guard to try to track them down, but the next time Colorado has any trouble with outlaws and bandits, I’ll call the governor and advise him to call you in on the case. You can track them down single-handed and talk them into giving up. I can just see brave ol’ Philman walking up to the killers, one by one, and disarming them with his bare hands.

Is it just a coincidence that Cooper is knocked off during the "anti-terror" campaign? The "national security" apparatus now has the perfect cover for the elimination of the leaders of patriot and militia groups. Funny how the major media has no interest in the police killing of a very well known broadcaster and author. I guess it just wouldn't do to make people curious about his views or the incident. As for you apologists for the police state, I can see why you're not worried. You're obviously too dumb to be of concern to those who would take away our liberties.

Also...notice how the story has changed. First, the deputy shot first, now it is Cooper who shot first.

"When the Spin Gets Sloppy..."

And people wonder about how "looneys" believe in conspiracies...

No thanks Fred, I'll keep the job at the lumber yard putting rubbers on the termites so they can >>ahem<< screw up the wood.

Send me your phone number and I’ll program it right into my phone, right next to 911.
Fred, if you live out in the boonies I suggest you arm and defend your own damn self. The deputies, or I, would only find your carcass if your life were truly threatened.
If you think that having an emergency number on your phone will save you, then send me where your pre-paid burial will be and I'll send flowers. 'Cause IF someone were to be so intent on taking your life a phone call would not save you.

I’ll call the governor and advise him to call you in on the case.
I'll tell him to follow your advice and call 911 if he calls...okay? Of course, he might get a quicker response time than you or I!
