Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams |
Unless you count sunday morning preachers and their prayer lines. "Thank you, we will forward your prayers to God. May I have your credit card number to cover the shipping and handling."
You don't? Are you dead? :)

You are kidding, right? You envy those who "booze and womanize"?????
Are you the one whose next post talks about "context"?
If there were not God, it would certainly be to our advantage to get all of the "creature comforts" we can before we die, wouldn't it?
But I was speaking to the situation where, like the parable of the workers, you work hard all day long while your brother fools around with women and lays about until 4:45 then gets hired and works 5 minutes and gets paid a full days' wage. Yeah, it kinda sucks. From a human point of view.

I meant stopped by the Catholic Church. You are right that there are still those who take advantage in the name of God. You also could be in danger of harming yourself with that ax you are swinging. I mean, our own preachers ask for money on Sunday too.

Hey bro, I wondered where you had moved to, and I don't appreciate you airing our dirty laundry for all to see either, any way, can't talk now, I have to send one of these broads friends down to the lacquer, grocery store for er, er ah, food, later bro.

Well I certainly get ideas and test them according to what my Church teaches, and everybody knows an idea doesn't last long around here before it is dissected by our "Christian Community." So in that sense yes, but in the sense of being compelled to believe myself over and above my Church and the other Christians I trust, no.
Well, that's not quite true. I did go over the edge in thinking that our beloved animals might find a place with us in Heaven. And I might have slightly different ideas about sex than the Church.

I have never, in any Church I have attended, been asked to pay to pray.
In the Catholic church I have been asked for money to help support a good cause, feed the poor, help paint a neighbors fence etc, but never as a way of helping my prayers get to God.
Did not mean to imply all TV preachers just those that appear to go over the line like Jim Bakker in the late eighties
Bass, I don't get it. The point of the parable, I thought, is that we should not be jealous of the mercy of God shown to others. Yeah it sucks to follow God all of your life while your brother boozes and womanizes. But if your brother comes to find God, even if on his death bed (end of the day in the parable) we should rejoice for his being saved, not grumble because we had to work all day. So yes, there are folks whose lives are changed at the last moment, but that doesn't mean that salvation is a "one moment" event for all. In fact most of us have to spend some time working in the fields.
True. But some people think that if I give the priest $50 to do my wedding or a funeral that I am "buying" access to the sacraments.

You know, now that my 11-year old daughter is starting to ask questions about sex, I think the Catholic Church may be onto something.

pilgrim I have only been saved for about three years now, and the life I led before was of sin, and you know what, sin was fun, if it was not nobody would be doing it. I still fight it every day as I'm sure you do, it keeps rearing its ugly head and at times I recall the good old days and it was a good time. But now I'm not proud of my past life and No, I would not trade the life that Christ has given me for the good old days.

To the human being that sucks. It isn't fair. I am not saying that it cosmically sucks, spiritually sucks. I am saying that it humanly sucks. Like the parable. If I work ten hours and you work 15 minutes and we get the same pay, it sucks. Humanly, I am better off goofing off all day and then rolling in when it's time for paychecks.
This is not to be confused with my actual feelings on the matter, it is an observation from a purely human "logic."

There is no substitute for good old fashioned guilt. How much more it hurts, not to have physical punishment, or privledges taken away, but to have a father or mother say to their child, "I expected better from you."
People like to fault the Church for instilling this "guilt" among its members, but the "guilt" is really nothing more than a well-informed (or well-drilled) conscience letting you know you are doing somethign wrong.
SD
And like Mr.C would you leave your church if you found their major teachings were wrong?
