Making changes to the Self-Search function, and in particular, how the database is organized in relation to Self-Search.

Self-Searches should now be lightning quick and should span many months. The current index holds about 6 months of data (all I have available.)

It's hard to IGNORE when you ping ALL 1/2 dozen times...enough already!!!!

What do you think about the moderators having an "disabling ability" for "all" -- so when they spot an idiot doing it, they can turn it off for the so-named idiot?

Because, at least for now before this bad idea is revoked, when you type "all" in the "to:" box, it pages everyone on the entire thread. Some people are already abusing the feature.

type ALL in the to field and it flags everyone on the thread. Also you can type a list in the to field of names but only the first 97 characters will show but those beyond 97 will be flagged.

That's a good idea !!! Although you would still have trash in your self search showing up from time to time until the new offending party was turned off.

Interesting, the moderator removed a bunch of posts but they still show up in the self search.

I now have fifteen posts in my self-search from this thread. Not only that, but I used to be able to do one self-search and then use the "Back" button to reaccess it and address the posts without having to reload the self-search. That no longer works so each time I want to check back I need to do a new search. Also, the missing top bar on the self-search was how I picked up my FReepmail without having to go to the Forum. It saved time and bandwidth. My hunch is that this experiment won't work as planned.

Well it is still experimental, but the Self Search is pretty critical.

I don't like seeing deleted threads show up, screws up the rhythm.

And the all feature would be Ok if it is not abused, (surely Freepers wouldn't do that!)

Nearly half the posts on my self search are “all” posts. Sometimes you don’t have to wait very long for an answer.

Its probably right in front of my face but I can't find the basics on search syntax.

I recall that you could do things like this in the search box:

Author:"Ann Coulter"
By:"A+Bert"
To:"Tunehead54"

Can we search by date? By date and author? Date range?

Really appreciate your efforts - things are looking good. But (sorry I cain't hep mesef) - A Search Info Page off the Help page could help lots of us to avoid duplicate posts saving the precious bandwidth that the post police are always harping about as they paste in their 1Mb Bitmaps (Tee Hee).

John, Is there a way to make a RED paragragh pop up when a person hits 'Review" stating: "The use of "all" will ping everyone who has posted on this thread. Is this what you want?" Excessive use of "all" will result in complaints to JR and could result in the removal of this feature! This would explain that "all" should be used only under tight circumstances. Comments anyone?
