Recent Changes @ FreeRepublic 12-Oct-2001

Posted on 10/12/2001 7:46:38 PM PDT by John Robinson

Making changes to the Self-Search function, and in particular, how the database is organized in relation to Self-Search.

Self-Searches should now be lightning quick and should span many months. The current index holds about 6 months of data (all I have available.)

What color are you talking about?

Very pretty. I simply remember, pre-today, that there was some red print or blue print in the names at the top as well as the bottom. It helps break the text up visually IMO. Do you remember the old opening page with the vibrant red, white and blue designs? I really miss that one. Guess it was slow to load.

I forgot to mention one drawback. Your inbox fills up rather quickly if you're corresponding frequently with several different people. Be sure to clean house after that conversation is finished, unless it's something you really want to save.

I'd like to suggest that at minimum, a link to the site home page be available on the self search page (if not everything that used to be).

Thanks John, I like a lot of the changes, I'm sure you'll get it just right and then we'll all get used to it.

As I said before, it would be great if the Self Search function would:
1. allow an option to show first 100 words or so of each reply on the Self Search reply screen, allowing one to not waste bandwidth and time to go see what's there and its just a bump.

2. When you select a reply on the Self Search reply screen, give a choice to go to the Top, the the Post that was being replied to, or the actual Reply itself. If you think about it, there are times when all three are appropriate and it would be better if you could select the right choice from the Self Search replies screen.

I predict that the new unlimited To: field length will greatly increase the # of pings on FR, a lot of which will be nuisance pings. Everyone will develop their little ping clique and send lots of things to all of them. The hassle of it all is what stops people from doing this now. You have eliminated the hassle.

Becasue of this last point, the number of messages each active Freeper is going to be getting pinged to is going to increase a lot. So, the tools I describe in 1,2 above would greatly help and reduce required bandwidth.

Thanks and feel free to ask questions if i'm not making sense. FReegards, RobFromGa

I just saw on a thread - "Comment #7 Removed By Moderator."

What is your opinion on naming who the comment was by?

Example: Comment #7 By Abcx Removed By Moderator.

Thanks for the flag. Just returned from the Fresno "Support our Troops Rally" and haven't had much of a chance to look things over. The consensus seems to be that the changes are good, but I'm still too confused to know how I feel about the new features. It is a good sign that so many people seem to be enthused.

John wasn't at the rally, but I did talk to Jim a little about the recent changes. He explained, with a lot of technical talk that I really didn't understand, why all of this is necessary and how much the changes will improve the site. I believe he is right, but it is still difficult for those of us who resist change. :-)

You can now use an unlimited number of names in the To: field

I was just experimenting with it, updated my FReep list, and it's working superb -- what an awesome tool. Many thanks, John.

Somebody needs to bump a lot of people to this message.

I'll do the honors...(that is, if someone hasn't already beaten me to the punch)
