Making changes to the Self-Search function, and in particular, how the database is organized in relation to Self-Search.
Self-Searches should now be lightning quick and should span many months. The current index holds about 6 months of data (all I have available.)
Very pretty. I simply remember, pre-today, that there was some red print or blue print in the names at the top as well as the bottom. It helps break the text up visually IMO. Do you remember the old opening page with the vibrant red, white and blue designs? I really miss that one. Guess it was slow to load.
:-)
Seriously, CCC. Ouuuuch. Don't do dat, please. It'd be harder to carry a protest sign, and we need you out there.
More luv to ya ping! Feel better now? : )
As I said before, it would be great if the Self Search function would:
1. allow an option to show first 100 words or so of each reply on the Self Search reply screen, allowing one to not waste bandwidth and time to go see what's there and its just a bump.
2. When you select a reply on the Self Search reply screen, give a choice to go to the Top, the the Post that was being replied to, or the actual Reply itself. If you think about it, there are times when all three are appropriate and it would be better if you could select the right choice from the Self Search replies screen.
I predict that the new unlimited To: field length will greatly increase the # of pings on FR, a lot of which will be nuisance pings. Everyone will develop their little ping clique and send lots of things to all of them. The hassle of it all is what stops people from doing this now. You have eliminated the hassle.
Becasue of this last point, the number of messages each active Freeper is going to be getting pinged to is going to increase a lot. So, the tools I describe in 1,2 above would greatly help and reduce required bandwidth.
Thanks and feel free to ask questions if i'm not making sense. FReegards, RobFromGa

John wasn't at the rally, but I did talk to Jim a little about the recent changes. He explained, with a lot of technical talk that I really didn't understand, why all of this is necessary and how much the changes will improve the site. I believe he is right, but it is still difficult for those of us who resist change. :-)
I was just experimenting with it, updated my FReep list, and it's working superb -- what an awesome tool. Many thanks, John.
I'll do the honors...(that is, if someone hasn't already beaten me to the punch)
