I first read this in 1996, and after the war actually DID break out, I hunted the article back up again. It was a thesis of Richard J. Maybury all during the 1990's, and from the current perspective, it looks like his ideas are turning out to be correct.
All I can say is thank you Bill Clinton, for keeping busy banging the interns, and lining the pockets of the DNC, your wife, and yourself, while dismantling our military virtually committing treason by selling national security to the Chinese and stealing everything that wasn't nailed down. Ain't buying any of it. Too much self interest among the nations cited above. Look what hapened when the Soviet Union broke up, petty wars between nations that were at each other throats before the Soviets brought them under one flag. If they were going to bind together for any sort of pact, the first would have been self defense, and done ages ago. Even in Afghanistan the divisions among the ethnic groups prohibited any real unity of purpose.
This "New Axis" is a whim. The only real stab at binding them together has been done in the recent past, By Osama Bin Laden. He may have been successful at recruiting lots of terrorists, but let's face it, Afghanistan is the only place that would have him.
I am not going to say that the Chinese are with us 100%, but to think that they would join hands with people that are their enemies is absurd. Right now, nothing means more to them than admittance to the WTO. They are not going to jeopardize that for any reason. They have too many people to feed.
