ALBANY, N.Y. -- Groups representing New York state bar owners contend the statewide smoking ban has cost their industry about 2,000 jobs.

A study released Tuesday by the New York Nightlife Association and the Empire State Restaurant and Tavern Association said the ban that went into effect in July has also led to $28.5 million in lost wages and $37 million in lost gross state product. Affiliated businesses lost another 650 jobs and $56 million in wages and production, the study by Ridgewood Economic Associates said.

I've seen first hand restaurants who have had a massive growth in business by the smoking ban. Why? After their meals, smokers tend to chit chat while smoking, loitering an extra half hour at the table while spending nothing. With the ban, the turnover has doubled, the wait for tables is cut in half, and revenues are way up.

I can't tell by your page what state your in. So I can't verify if your telling the truth or not. Personally, I think your having a pipe dream.

The fact of the matter is: smokers linger longer, tip better and are more fun to be around!

You talk about a resturant having such a super turn-over, you must be talking about Mother's Day!

Six months from now there probably will be a few more restaurants and bars to add to Dave's list.

Did you check my link? There's a whole lot of restaurant's in Maine that jumped the shark as well, that Dave doesn't have on his link.

I would still like to know why some posters in here think it's just great for the government intervention, don't you? I think they are talking through their.......ah.......heh!

No wonder Al-Quida figures they have us....shoot....people are scared to death of a little smoke. Think what they will do over something REALLY major.

I'd give you a big hug if I could! You are thinking like I am. We are at war, and all these pansies can think about is smoking and second hand smoke. Pretty damn sad, I think!!!! What a bunch of pansies. I can always tell who's a man in here! Even if they DON'T smoke!

Facts? Facts? What the hell do facts have to do with anything these days?

Amen! Not only re: tobacco, but other liberal "solutions" for us, the great unwashed.

Smoking ban hurts business? Oh well, breezily replies the liberal, "Quil mangent de la brioche." ("Let them eat cake.")

You don't know much about the restaurant business.

The people who hang out after a meal (smokers or non) are a huge source of profit. They buy coffee and or drinks and or deserts, which are all very profitable. When they leave without buying any of those things, because they want a smoke, all that profit is lost.

Since when do lawmakers take facts into consideration anyway? New York is full of idiots, a laughingstock.

I don't have too. I specialize in stock arbitrage, numbers and profit are my life. When a long time friend, who has managed a huge restaurant for years tells me the new law has mushroomed his profits overnight, I'm happy for him. Conversely, if belligerent smokers and wannabe restaurant owners complain about his additional success, I could care less.

P.S. After all, I don't fart in their face when they eat.
