Lobbying Day in Albany..this coming Tuesday
United Restaurant & Tavern Owners of New York, Inc. | June 4, 04 | United Restaurant & Tavern Owners of New York, Inc.

Dear Friend of New Yorks Hospitality Industry

IT'S TIME TO TAKE ACTION TO AMEND THE SMOKING BAN!

URTO, along with the New York Nightlife Association, The Empire State Restaurant & Tavern Association and the Amusement and Music Operators of America, is inviting you to attend "Lobby Day" in Albany next Tuesday, June 8th, to help us lobby the state legislature for a reasonable amendment to last year's statewide smoking ban.

Legislation has been introduced in both the Assembly and Senate to allow smoking once again in bars, clubs and taverns that install state-of-the-art air filtration systems. We think this is a very reasonable compromise to the ban, since it will only impact bars and clubs - the establishments that got hit the hardest by the ban - yet will still keep the air inside clean, since the air filtration devices will only be approved by the State if they meet very strict Health Department standards for clean air.

There is a REAL CHANCE to pass the Meier-Destito Amendment - THIS YEAR!!

The time to act on this legislation is NOW!!!

The legislature is planning to wrap up their legislative session on June 22, so we only have a few short weeks left to let them know how bad this ban has been for our business. We need owners, employees, customers, suppliers up to come up to Albany next Tuesday to let our representatives know how important it is that they amend the smoking ban before they come home to seek re-election.

We will be gathering in Albany next Tuesday, June 8th at 10:00 AM. Our plan is that we will be congregating in the Assembly Parlor, which is Rm. 306 of the State Capitol. The Capitol is on State Street between S. Swan Street and Eagle Street.

If you are planning on attending, please RSVP by sending me an email at Brian.nolan@urandto.com or calling me at 212-557-5200 and I will update you on our schedule for the day.

Again, this is our last chance to amend the smoking ban this year. We need to see you up in Albany next week! Car-pools are available. Thanks again for your help.

Sincerely,

Brian Nolan

Exec Director

New York State Legislature
NY State Assembly
NY State Senate
Send a short note indicating your hope for their support of the MEIER – DESTITO Bill now being considered in both houses, in the Senate and Assembly Health Committees.

None of it can hurt - as long as we stay on the message that our out of state dollars will stay out of NY and continue to hurt these businesses. Thus, NYS coffers.

The businesses want us and our money - apparently the state does not, except in cigarette taxes.

It is the legislators themselves who are destroying these businesses, not the smokers, especially those smokers that are seeking other places to spend our tourist dollars.

As you know I live 8 miles from the MD state line and only 50 miles from DE. We were over on Chincoteague yesterday and the discussion turned to the Delaware smoking ban when someone asked why there was a Ban Ruth Ann bumpersticker on a Virginia car. This was a group that normally went to one of the Delaware beaches to get away from the chaos of Dover during Race week - They were on Chincoteague because of the DE smoking ban.

Another woman that chimed into the conversation said she totally LOVES the DE smoking ban - she owns a bar in Maryland. She has seen a HUGE increase in her business.

Tourism dollars not going to these places with the bans - and their tourism offices being informed of the reason - is going to be the reason they get at first modified, and then repealed. but we have to let them know and keep reminding them why we are not going to these places.

It is not a health issue, it is not a smokers' rights issue - it is completely and totally a business issue and permitting these businesses to choose their own individual clientele.

I'm calling it a night, I need some sleep - it's been a long day of town festivals and gardening........the 40 foot rows of corn (5 of them) were the easiest garden work I did today. I've got more than 200 plants in the garden and haven't started on putting in seeds yet..........nor have any of my tobacco plants gone in yet. (yes, I have a VERY large garden)

I'm always interested in what's happening upstate.

To be honest, the only Democrats who don't personally offend me are McNulty and Bragman.

It amazes me that some of these clowns, Hinchey, Slaughter, et. al., manage to keep getting reelected.

P.S. What's happened to Dennis Vacco? Is he still involved in local politics, or has he completely retired from public life?

I haven't heard Vacco's name mentioned in years.

I think it was briefly mentioned in connection with the open congressional seat upstate, though the Buffalo News article on the race mentioned that the BF wasn't able to locate him for comment.

I don't even want to speculate on his whereabouts, especially after the bizarre way in which he arranged the transition from his office to that of Eliot Spitzer.

thetruth.com has their own agenda. Are you easily swayed? Do you believe everything you read? If so, I feel sorry for you.

One question: how did so many of us live as long as we have if SHS is so dangerous? Most of us hung out in night clubs back when they didn't have smoke eaters. How did we live this long? Your talking to the wrong person. Pick on someone your own mental size!

So let me get this straight...bar/tavern owners have their private property rights taken away by the state, lose money and patronage, and now are expected to spend even more money to bring themselves inline with the "strict Health Department standards"...and you're ok with this? Sheesh...why not just offer to rip off your arm and let them beat you over the head with it, too.

NO! I am not okay with any more demands by the state, just a few short years ago they were forced to build seperate rooms for smokers with their own ventilation systems.

Everything was working great, actually alot of restaurants had filled to capacity smoking areas and waiting lines while the non smoking sections had places available.

Bar and Restaurant owners will do what ever they can to save their business, while this ban is in place they do what they have to do to survive.

The anti smoking nazi's have the legislators in their back pocket, as do the health dept nazi's, they will demand and demand anything they want. If the restaurants and bars want to survive they have no choice but to comply untill this law is overturned.

We the People must start to yell from the roof tops, Judges cannot legislate from the bench and legislators must stop infringing on our rights as smokers and business owners.

This is not Moscow!

Anyone who is naive enough to believe a site that has the balls to call itself thetruth.com will believe anything.

When some of these folks are around long enough they will realize that for every study there will come another study saying just the opposite.

I stopped paying attention to all of them years ago no matter what the subject.Statistics can be tweaked, and tweaked they are.

Look at the low fat,low carb diets. Complete opposites yet people are in an absolute frenzy about them. The businesses don't call folks "sheeple" for nothing.

Exactly, Mears.  And this 17-year-old "kid" sure has a lot to learn!  Reminds me of the following cartoon. Heh!

Isn't that a hoot? True though. Kids can be members of the Calibine group, but boy! They sure better not smoke!

I don't think I spelled Calibine right.  But you know what I mean.

There is NOTHING in the world that thinks they kmow more about everything than a teenager.

I was that way,my now middle aged kids were that way,and my grandchildren are rapidly getting there.

The aforementioned kids that I had(there were 5 of them)all grew up in a smoke filled home and turned out to be athletic non-smokers. It was the same for many kids of their generation, the over hyped baby-boomers.

How on earth do you explain this,cyberjet31?

Don't believe everything that you read on the internet, including truth.com. It's just somebody spewing out information and who knows how true it is.

If you believe everything you read here, you have to believe me,which of course is silly, you probably won't.

A little more life experience will guide you better when reading propaganda disguised as news.

look- I don't see why I can't speak my view without being attacked by other freepers. I am not going around acting like I know everything in the whole world, but because I am 17, I must be the typical teenager stereotype, and my interpretation of scientific findings are therefore allowed to be so easily dismissed. I did not say anything to anyone that smoking should be outlawed in any way, shape, or form. In one post I just stated that I liked clean air- big deal! In something else, I stated my dislike for it, but never said anything about my support (or lack thereof) for any law or change in any law.

How can I explain that? I can’t. I was going off the research form the tobacco companies, universities, and federal agencies.

That is not what bothers me though. What bothers me is that when I speak my mind and it is not the same view as the posters on this thread, I am excessively chastised. I have been a strong advocate for conservative causes, including going as far as leading counter protest against hippies when they had a 5:1 advantage against us- but I say one thing about the dangers of smoking and I get ganged up on. There is a difference between debate and personal attacks. If anyone would like to do either, send me mail through FR Mail, but after this week, I have finals to study for...
