GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Leona Fitzpatrick is going to court -- in order to go to the senior prom.
She's been barred from her prom for smoking -- and not even on school grounds. The Hillsboro, N.D., School Board has rules against students using alcohol, tobacco or drugs.
Students can be kicked out of extracurricular activities for violating the no-smoking rule. Now, Leona is seeking a court order so she can go to the dance. Her parents point out that she's 18 and legally allowed to smoke in North Dakota.

Good for the school. She knew the rules going into this. Is she can't follow rules, then she should be banned. If you think the reach of the school's authority should stretch beyond school property, then you certainly won't mind your local public school telling you what to teach your kids at home, right?

I had a coach in High School, Coach Underwood. He was a short (about 5'3"), stocky SOB who liked to talk tough and took no crap off of anyone.
One day, Richard, a very big friend of mine (nicknamed "Tiger") decided he had had enough and challenged Underwood in the gym. He talked some serious smack to the coach and basically assaulted him. Because Tiger was a big, tough, hoodlum-type, who towered over the coach (he outweighed him by quite a bit, also) we were looking forward to Coach Underwood finally being humbled.
Underwood beat Tiger from one end of the gym to another. He mopped the floor with him. It was an a$$ kicking of epic proportions.
After that, nobody messed with Coach Underwood. He might be the toughest man I have ever seen.

I hope the courts come down hard on the school board. They have no right intruding on legal behavior off the school ground. I hope the courts stop interfering in education and contributing to the deliquency of public school students.

This site is made up of people who refuse to act like lemmings and run off the cliff. As you can see, many FReepers question rules. Big, controlling, intrusive government is not conservative, and it doesn't matter if that government is fed, state, local, or school board idiots.
The rules set by the school violate state laws that permit the girl in question to smoke at 18. Your local bunch of school board yahoos do not get to trump state law just because the anti-tobacco thugs have gotten to them.

No one's power extends to legal activity on private property. Here's your shovel.
Ah... Comparing people who disagree with you to Nazis. How original. Hey, Hitler wore shoes. If you've ever worn shoes, that makes you a Nazi, dontchaknow?

I'll bet.
Apparently marijuana and cocaine are A-OK for the libs, but enjoying a cigarette warrants a punishment such as the one this girl's received. Strange stuff.
To: Modernman
That didn't happen, it was just a remeinder that you or your cohort yesterday made the case that Nazi's didn't care about smoking. It was incorrect then, it is incorrect now. Just like you. Ta Ta now goofy, I'm outta here for the day.

just because the anti-tobacco thugs have gotten to them. BINGO!!!!
In one of the later listed links, an article states she had given a speech regarding smokers and rights and admitted she is a smoker........that is why they are taking off on her. she broke the cardinal rule of not being brainwashed by the aforementioned thugs.........IMHO.

I hope her lawyer kicks some school board butt. If she can't get the court order, she ought to show up anyway with all the TV cameras she can find.
After that, the principal and all the school board members should have their houses egged and teepeed. Then we'll go from there!

she's 18 and legally allowed to smoke in North Dakota. She is 18, no law broken, time for the power-tripers at the school to shut the he11 up and get over themselves.

I think it would be just dandy if the courts followed the written law for a change. The girl is old enough to make her own decision about smoking. If you don't like the law change it.
