March 12, 2004 -- The Health Department's "smoking police" raided The St. Regis hotel last week after reports that cigars were smoked during a Wall Street bash attended by Mayor Bloomberg, The Post has learned. A city inspector found no smoking gun at a wine-tasting event at the hotel last Friday night. But the inspector did issue two violations for unsanitary conditions.

The most difficult problem here would have been wasting my cigar.

This is an outrage. It wasn't the hotel's fault that Bloomberg's buddies were smoking. Put it this way -- would you want to be the poor schlub who has to tell the mayor's friends that they're violating the law? Bloomberg got mocked, and rightly so, for banning smokers in the city, but condoning his buddies lighting up. So, in response to this negative coverage, Bloomie sics his health inspectors on the hotel. Talk about abuse of power!

One other thing:

Days earlier, a City Hall aide told The Post the mayor was aware of the illegal activities but that "he'd seen violations before and doesn't take it upon himself to report them."

That's funny, since Bloomberg has made a point of publicly saying that he himself uses the 311 number to report other violations he has seen.

I agree with everything you say, but want to expand on one statement you make in reference to the battle in Delaware about the smoking ban.

Put it this way -- would you want to be the poor schlub who has to tell the mayor's friends that they're violating the law?

The smoking ban went into effect in Delaware the day before Thanksgiving in 2002. We were then and remain a nation at war and the unfortunate result of war is that we lose some of our servicemen. Dover Air Force Base is where the remains of these brave Freedom Fighters touch US soil for the last time.

Many of us posed the simple question to the legislators and the governor who endorced the ban if they would be willing to act as the "bouncer" in the bars in the Dover area when servicemen came in for a beer after escorting the remains of one of their buddies. Would any of them be willing to be the one that said "Soldier, take it outside" to a man who had just come from fighting for the freedoms he swore an oath to uphold?

To this day, not a one of us has received an answer.

As a born and raised Brooklynite - I agree with another poster - bloominidiot is scum......and I add much of the Delaware legislature and it's governor to that list.

My first impression and I think accurate: The Old Bitch category; I think the canine world needs that niche for this jerky.

Let me see if I get this straight - Health Officials raided the hotel nearly two months after a party where smoking was reported and a complaint was filed. Did they honestly expect to find evidence? Are these the same people who fined a shop for having an ashtray a few months ago?

Your tax dollars at work....

What an excellent way to put it. Good job!

Cigar smoking on 1/15/04. Lo and behold when the smoke police show up on 3/12/04, no Bloomberg, no friends, no cigars.

"It's the Health Department's responsibility to issue tickets based on complaints and random inspections," the aide added."

The true yellow side is shown by the socialist mayor. Only the little people need heed his edicts. Bloomingidiot, your fascist side is showing!
