The Georgia Senate overwhelmingly approved a statewide ban of smoking inside public places Thursday. As a majority of senators co-signed the bill, it was expected to pass.
Backers of the measure brought children into the Capitol to promote their point that second-hand smoke is dangerous to non-smokers.
While the bill would ban smoking in places such as restaurants, an amendment granted an exemption for free-standing bars that get at least 80 percent of their business from drink sales.
Some lawmakers argued that the Legislature is behind the times, but backers said it is never too late to save lives.
"There are so many deaths and disabilities associated with second-hand smoke. We teach our children not to smoke and 80 percent of them work in high school and are working in smoke-filled restaurants that's equivalent to smoking a pack-and-a-half of cigarettes a day," said Sen. Don Thomas, R-Dalton.
Violators would face up to a $100 fine for the first offense, up to $200 for the second offense, and so on. The bill now moves to the House, where it faces an uncertain future.
Lawmakers in the House approved a separate anti-smoking measure Thursday. The bill bans smoking inside a car that contains a child. Smokers would be forced to roll down the car windows if they light up with a child present. The fine for a violation would cost $15.

I agree with you, it's too bad the surgeon general doesn't jusr ban tobacco altogether, the "pull the band-aid off quickly rather than slowly" and we'll all be done with this highly poisonous substance.
My brother's asthma is now so bad he had to be put on steroids to breathe. Three of the five children in our family have asthma, the direct result of smoking parents.
Suggestion: Go to the zoo. Put a long pipe into the lion's cage and pump in tobacco smoke. See how many minutes it takes to be arrested. Make it a she-lion.
Oh, the injustice of it all!

"There are so many deaths and disabilities associated with second-hand smoke" See this? And the stupid general public believes these lies! I wonder how so many of us made it this far in life, having been born into smoking families.
The highly over paid professional anti-smokers are nothing but prostitutes! Living off the taxes paid for by smokers. They all make me sick. And statements like the above make me grab my waste paper basket to barf in!

However, how about you sitting in a closed garage with your car running, and I will sit in a car with smokers. See which one of us lives the longest!

Asthma has nothing to do with smoking. Correlation does not equal causation nor do anecdotes equal data.

There are a few bugaboo's in Free Republic that "I" too, have added to my ignore list. Pity! And I thought we all were Conservatives over here.

California is a great place for a child with asthma to grow up, with polution in the cities equal to smoking a pack a day.

I'm sorry about the three kids with asthma but their parents' smoking didn't give it to them.
I was a severe asthmatic from age 5 until age 21,in a non-smoking home.I started smoking in my late teens and am still smoking 50 years later and no more asthma.
I raised 5 kids and my husband and I both smoked and none of our kids had asthma.
I'm certainly not saying smoking is good for asthmatics, although Teddy Roosevelt's fancy doctors thought it was.(in the book "Mornings on Horseback). I just feel that smoking is blamed for everything today, from low birth weight to delinquency.
If smoking causes asthma how did the many thousands of kids who live in non-smoking homes get it?

This week there's been an add running on Bangor TV stations claiming that 50,000 deaths a year are caused by second hand smoke.
I'd like to find some ambulance chaser with the sack to take them on...

Where on earth do these people get the statistics that says working in a smoky place for a period of time is equivalent to smoking a pack and a half a day.
How long is the shift? 6 hours? 40 hours? 100 hours?
Do they just pull these statistics out of a hat and why aren't they challenged?
