[history]
February 7, 2004 -- The ringleader of an illegal cigarette scam in Queens was smoked out yesterday after he tried to bribe an NYPD sergeant with up to $20,000 to keep patrol officers away from his bootleg butt business, police said. Robert Booker, 35, was arrested Thursday night for selling untaxed cigarettes near the Long Island Rail Road station in Jamaica.

This should surprise no one. It's probably the tip of the iceberg in states with high cigarette taxes.

Funny how police and judges turn a blind eye to everything else but if it involves cigarettes, your lower than dirt. You deserve the death penalty.

I thought I'd ping you on this, it really shows elistist hypocrisy at its most blatent. I'm happy the Post made it a front page story, and I hope Bloomberg is challenged on this on his next foray onto talk radio, which happens regularly on Fridays on the John Gambling show.

Tax fraud is ussually(sic)

It could happen again.

LOL!!!!
Government treasuries and lawyers pockets are the winners with these assininely outrageous taxes.
This guy was an idiot for offering the cop a bribe - he would probably have just gotten a slap on the wrist for the cig bust and back in business the next day.

Don't count on that. John Gambling is so far up one term Mikey's ŧ§ that Baffoonberg could come out with a ban on puppies and kittens and he would be all for it.
John Gambling is also another whiney anti-smoking gnatzie, I remember a couple of months ago he was complaining about being bothered by somebody smoking a cigarette in a car three cars in front of him at a red light!!
He is as liberal as you can get, He just pretends to be a Conservative for ratings. I wish they yank him off the air. He gets good ratings because he is only on for an hour and has a great timeslot between Curtis & Kuby and Rush, Kind of like that Thursday 8:30 timeslot a couple of years ago on NBC between Seinfeld and Friends where NBC could pretty much put the test screen on and it would still get high ratings.

"John Gambling is also another whiney anti-smoking gnatzie,..."
You are right, I forgot that! Even though it is the reason I don't listen to him any more. I can't believe I forgot why I hate him!
"He gets good ratings because he is only on for an hour and has a great timeslot between Curtis & Kuby and Rush..."
I'll tell you what I listen to instead now, the Brian Lehrer show on NPR on WNYC 820 AM. Don't write him off just because it's NPR, it's really a great show. Lehrer is a great host, I'm sure he's liberal, but he challenges EVERY guest, and he often has conservatives on.
The show is also great because it covers every topic you can think of, and they do about 20-30 minute segments. He'll do national politics, local politics, jersey politics (they even remember us out here in the jersey boondocks that most NYC media ignore nearly completely), movies, books, all kinds of things. If you don't like the topic, just wait, in a few minutes it'll be something completely different.
I'm totally hooked on it now, and I'd recommend it to anyone. Maybe Lehrer can get Bloomy on and ask him some tough questions about why he's trying to destroy the City.

I,personally, wish cigs were illegal and then we could all buy them from bootleggers and all belong to some smoke-easy or another.
The hypocrisy of the states, especially mine that taxes $1.51 per pack, and then bans smoking just about everyplace, amazes me.
Outlaw them and be done with it and go without taxes from cigs and then spend millions to enforce the laws. Might be as successful as the so called war on drugs.

"Is Brian Lehrer related to Jim Lehrer?"
Unusually enough for a radio personality I've actually seen a picture of Brian Lehrer. He doesn't resemble Jim Lehrer, and I have no reason to think they are related, but I suppose it's well within the realm of possibility.
