National Vietnam veterans foundation donation - scam?

Posted on 07/10/2016 2:25:12 PM PDT by freebird5850

A telemarketer called and asked me to donate. They want me to send my payment to PO Box 44260 West Allis WI. I looked up the website and they are located in Washington D.C. Another google search brought up a story by the Washington Times showing the CEO driving away in a Rolls Royce. Other searches state this is the worst place to give donations. Please provide any info you have. I have donated to them is years past but something here just doesn't feel right. Thanks in advance.

Don’t trust it. Ask them to mail you a letter with info on how the money is spent.

Firm rule: never respond to an offer/request when they call you. If it’s a charity call - even a legitimate one - the caller is most probably working for a professional solicitation company.

So that company would get a big slice of your donation.

Sorry, I know that doesn’t answer your question. But I think it’s worth throwing out for discussion.

So it is basically a vehicle to raise funds for fundraising.\

In other words, it's not worth donating to.

There are so many established veterans groups out there that when a new one pops up my VN vet folks research it right off. We give to the USO and Disabled Vets and that’s about it.

Scams. Never give to any of them. Give to the USO or other legit organizations.

Check out Disabled American Veterans. I’ve heard they are the best in terms of using the most of the money collected for vets.

FWIW, I keep all my donations reserved for local charities. That way I can keep an eye on what’s going on.

I do not donate to United Way who takes your donation, chops off their “commission” and then donates the rest to a charity they choose. I prefer to pick my own charities.

Like FReeper Doogle above, I tell phone solicitors I do not donate over the phone. A nice way of ending the conversation.

If you are looking for a good charity go with the Human Fund.

PM me for details.

Never, never, never. Do not trust telephone charity calls, never.

I made the mistake of donating years ago and I was hounded day and night for years to donate more. 2:00 AM, 5:00 AM, dinner time, day after day.

The marketing company, Xentel, was unreachable until I finally broke the code and found their headquarters and then some corporate officers and then found their home phone numbers.

They were not happy to be called at home and we reached a deal whereby they cut me from their phone lists and I wouldn’t call them anymore. I did more research and found that 93% of the funds raised went to Xentel and the rest to the charity. The remaining 7% largely goes to that charity’s officers’ wages and other overhead.

Our state Attorney General refused to do anything, claiming that the “Supreme Court ruled that charities can do this kind of marketing”.

Xentel wasn’t done. I got another call last year and ramped up the old phones and threatened a lawsuit. Once again Xentel backed off.

We’ll see.

NEVER donate to any charity that contacts you first.

that means... cold calls you, mass e-mails you, sends you mass marketed mailings, knocks at your front door, or accosts you as you enter/leave a supermarket/mall.
