Not real. Army article dated 1 April 2011 and last sentence of article says that the implementation date will be April Fools’ Day, 2012.

They should give the generals dunce-caps. How many more years in Afghanistan? They ought to take every admiral and general now, and over the past eight years, and drop their sorry butts into Afghanistan. Can’t figure out how to win this? What are we paying you for? All flag officers to Afghanistan. The fighting would be done in three months.
2nd that. They were in wide use in the mid-70s when I was in HS, and there was a cav unit next to our housing complex. And you’d see guys at the PX and o-club and such.
When your job was to be a speedbump in the Fulda Gap, the least the Army could do is give you some cool headgear.
