U.S. Military History, Current Events and Veterans Issues

Where Duty, Honor and Country
are acknowledged, affirmed and commemorated.

Our Mission:

The FReeper Foxhole is dedicated to Veterans of our Nation's military forces and to others who are affected in their relationships with Veterans.

In the FReeper Foxhole, Veterans or their family members should feel free to address their specific circumstances or whatever issues concern them in an atmosphere of peace, understanding, brotherhood and support.

The FReeper Foxhole hopes to share with it's readers an open forum where we can learn about and discuss military history, military news and other topics of concern or interest to our readers be they Veteran's, Current Duty or anyone interested in what we have to offer.

If the Foxhole makes someone appreciate, even a little, what others have sacrificed for us, then it has accomplished one of it's missions.

We hope the Foxhole in some small way helps us to remember and honor those who came before us.

JOINT POW/MIA ACCOUNTING COMMAND (JPAC)

Until they are home...

Some of our readers may remember that last November I did a thread on Mortuary Affairs History where we discussed JPAC and their work in recovering our POW/MIA's. I thought today I would provide some news from JPAC for an update of the work our troops in this area are doing.

Briefly a reminder of what JPAC is:

Mission and History The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, was activated on Oct. 1, 2003. JPAC’s mission is to achieve the fullest possible accounting of all Americans missing as a result of our nation’s previous conflicts. Our highest priority is the return of any living Americans that remain prisoners of war.

JPAC was created from the merger of the 30 year old U.S. Army Central Identification Laboratory, Hawaii, and the 11 year old Joint Task Force - Full Accounting. This 425-person organization, commanded by a flag officer, is committed and dedicated to bringing home the nation’s service members and civilians who made the ultimate sacrifice.

RELEASE NO. #04-14

June 1, 2004

FORENSIC TEAM SEARCHES FOR FALLEN U.S. SERVICEMEN NEAR CAEN, FRANCE

Almost 60 years to the date of D-Day, a nine-member American search and recovery team from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) in Hawaii will begin a search for the remains of three U.S servicemen missing in action in France during World War II.

The recovery operation near Caen, France is focused on the gunner, co-pilot and radio operator of a B-17G from the 91ST Bomb Group, 322nd Bomb Squadron. The crew was on a bombardment mission from Bassingborn, England (AAF Station 121) to an area southeast of Caen when their plane went down in August of 1944. Six of the nine-member crew were recovered, identified, and re-interred in USMC Blosville, and Gorron, France.

322nd

The JPAC recovery team performing the excavation of the crash site is comprised of a team leader, team sergeant, anthropologist, mortuary affairs specialists, photographer, medic, explosive ordnance disposal technician and a French linguist. Before arriving in France, the JPAC team recently completed a recovery operation of missing American service members lost during WWII in Shepr, Albania.

Worldwide Mission

The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command's (JPAC) mission is to achieve the fullest possible accounting of all Americans missing as a result of the nation's past conflicts. JPAC personnel search for, recover and identify remains of Americans unaccounted-for from the Persian Gulf War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, the Korean War and World War II. JPAC also performs other humanitarian missions as directed.

World War II recovery operations typically consist of teams deploying to such places as Europe, Papua New Guinea, China, the Pacific Islands, and many other locations where American service members are still missing. There are more than 78,000 American service members unaccounted for from World War II. Since 1973, the JPAC has identified and returned to their families more than 1,170 American servicemen formerly listed as unaccounted for from previous wars.

If anyone has information on additional American aircraft wreckage, they are invited to get in touch with the U.S. Embassy in France.

"Until they are home…"

JPAC Memorial dedicated to those lost keeping promise By Petty Officer Second Class Brandon Raile

HICKAM AFB, HAWAII - A memorial dedication commemorating seven service members who gave their lives, while searching for fallen comrades, was held on April 7, 2004 at the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command.

On the third anniversary of their deaths JPAC’s Commanding General, Brig. Gen. W. Montague Winfield unveiled and dedicated a memorial on an area called “Heroes Green.” The memorial is a lone rock about three feet high with an engraved plaque that bears the names of seven heroes. The entire park area was also dedicated to the individuals as only months ago instead of lush grass it was a dirt area scattered with gravel. Winfield began the dedication by giving a short speech and reading the names on the plaque.

Army Lt. Col. Rennie Cory Jr., Army Lt. Col. George D. Martin III, Air Force Maj. Charles E. Lewis, Air Force Master Sgt. Steven Moser, Navy Chief Petty Officer Pedro J. Gonzales, Air Force Tech. Sgt. Robert M. Flynn and Army Sgt. 1st Class Tommy J. Murphy were each individually honored by a moment of silence.

All seven, along with nine Vietnamese, were killed when the MI-17 helicopter they were flying in crashed into the mountains of Vietnam on April 7, 2001. “They were in Vietnam to fulfill the same promise JPAC is charged with, bringing home those who were lost and never came home,” said Winfield.

“Remember that these seven heroes died doing what they believed in,” Winfield said. “Remember that they loved their work, bringing closure to the families of our missing servicemen. And remember, that they were fathers and sons, brothers and husbands, and they left behind loved ones just like the ones we strive to find answers for every day.”

Looking over his shoulder, Winfield pointed out the American flag flying atop its staff in front of the JPAC headquarters and the POW/MIA flag waving below it. He explained, “Along the flag’s bottom it reads, ‘You are not forgotten.’ As President Coolidge once said, ‘The nation which forgets its defenders will itself be forgotten.’”

“They are not forgotten,” he concluded.

Winfield then laid a wreath on the memorial as two buglers from the Marine Forces Pacific Band played Taps. In the crowd, several of the nearly 400 gathered for the event wiped away tears.

One of those in the crowd was Tech. Sgt. Michael Murphy, of 735 AMS (Air Mobility Squadron), cousin of the deceased Sgt. 1st Class Tommy Murphy. The ceremony was proof to him that his country remembers the sacrifice his family has made. "It's nice to know that they are not forgotten," he said. "His mother still has a rough time with it, I really hope she can get out here to see this," Murphy added.

"Until they are home..."

Dog Tags

In 1994 a tourist to Hue City, Vietnam, purchased more than 1,400 dog tags believing they were from Americans listed as missing in action (MIA). A check of the dog tags revealed that although none appear to be those of an MIA, most are genuine and were worn by Americans during the war. In other words, these soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines served with honor and returned home after the war. Their dog tags, however, didn't.

The primary goals of this project are to reunite lost dog tags with their owners or family members and to collect some background information on how they were lost. So, if you find your name or the name of a friend on the list of over 1,000, please let us know. (Not all dog tags list the branch of service.) Once we verify that we're reuniting the correct dog tag with the correct person, we'll send it back to you at no cost. We have already reunited some people with their dog tags. Click here to learn more about these successful reunions.

If you have information about these or any other dog tags, please email JPAC's Webmaster.
