U.S. Military History, Current Events and Veterans Issues

Where Duty, Honor and Country
are acknowledged, affirmed and commemorated.

Our Mission:

The FReeper Foxhole is dedicated to Veterans of our Nation's military forces and to others who are affected in their relationships with Veterans.

In the FReeper Foxhole, Veterans or their family members should feel free to address their specific circumstances or whatever issues concern them in an atmosphere of peace, understanding, brotherhood and support.

The FReeper Foxhole hopes to share with it's readers an open forum where we can learn about and discuss military history, military news and other topics of concern or interest to our readers be they Veteran's, Current Duty or anyone interested in what we have to offer.

If the Foxhole makes someone appreciate, even a little, what others have sacrificed for us, then it has accomplished one of it's missions.

We hope the Foxhole in some small way helps us to remember and honor those who came before us.

Military Sea Lift Command

The ships of Military Sealift Command's Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force are the lifeline to U.S. Navy ships at sea. Providing fuel, food, ammunition, spare parts and other supplies, Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force, or NFAF, ships enable the Navy fleet to operate at the highest operational tempo possible. NFAF ships provide underway replenishment services to U.S. Navy ships worldwide alleviating the need for them to constantly return to port for supplies.

Military Sealift Command's Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force Program is composed of fleet ocean tugs, fast combat support ships, oilers, combat stores ships and ammunition ships plus two hospital ships that are kept in a reduced operating status. Besides delivering supplies at sea, NFAF ships also conduct towing and salvage operations and serve as floating medical facilities.

MSC's 36 NFAF ships are government-owned vessels crewed by civil service mariners. Small Navy departments that previously handled communications and signaling are being replaced by civilian mariners in a program that will be complete by FY 2002. A similar program will replace some Navy supply personnel with CIVMARs aboard MSC's six combat stores ships.

Fourteen underway replenishment oilers, such as USNS Patuxent, USNS Kanawha and USNS Guadalupe, provide underway replenishment of fuel to Navy ships at sea and jet fuel for aircraft assigned to aircraft carriers. Three of the newest MSC underway replenishment oilers have double hulls.

Six combat stores ships, such as USNS Concord, USNS Sirius and USNS San Jose, provide underway replenishment of all types of supplies, ranging from repair parts to fresh food and clothing. Five ocean-going tugs, such as USNS Sioux and USNS Mohawk, provide the Navy with towing service, and, when augmented by Navy divers, assist in the recovery of downed ships and aircraft.

Ammunition ships ensure that Navy battle groups are the highly mobile "sea bases" they must be to deter aggression and protect U.S. interests. MSC's six ammunition ships, such as USNS Flint and USNS Mount Baker, efficiently move tons of ammunition through a combination of at-sea, side-by-side line transfers and vertical lifts via helicopters.

The NFAF Program also manages the operation of the Navy's two hospital ships -- USNS Comfort and USNS Mercy -- designed to provide emergency, on-site care for U.S. combat forces. Comfort and Mercy, which each contain 12 operating rooms and a 1,000-bed hospital facility, are normally kept in a reduced-operating-status. When called into action, they can be ready to sail in five days with a crew of 70 civilian mariners and a medical staff of more than 1,200 military medical personnel.

The Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force began in 1972 with the transfer of the fleet oiler Taluga to MSC after a series of tests showed civilian crews could operate the Navy's fleet support ships more efficiently than Navy sailors. The impressive cost savings resulting from the use of MSC civilian crews continues to grow each year as Military Sealift Command assumes more of the Navy's combat logistics role. In the next few years, MSC expects that trend to continue, as additional Navy resupply ships and missions are transferred to the command.

In the years to come, the Naval Fleet Auxiliary Force will continue to be a vital, highly-productive and important support element for the U.S. Navy. NFAF plays an essential part in the Navy's ability to position itself "Forward...From the Sea."

Mission

The mission of Military Sealift Command is to provide ocean transportation of equipment, fuel, supplies and ammunition to sustain U.S. forces worldwide during peacetime and in war for as long as operational requirements dictate. During a war, more than 95 percent of all the equipment and supplies needed to sustain the U.S. military are carried by sea.

As one of three component commands, MSC provides the sea transportation to support the mission of the United States Transportation Command: To provide air, land, and sea transportation for the DOD, both in time of peace and time of war.

Recent crises have underscored the vital role of Military Sealift Command as a major contributor in the execution of our national strategy. The command operates ships that provide combat logistics support to U.S. Navy ships at sea; special mission support to U.S. government agencies; prepositioning of U.S. military supplies and equipment at sea; and ocean transportation of defense cargo in both peacetime and war.

History

During World War II, four separate government agencies controlled sea transportation. In 1949, the Military Sea Transportation Service, renamed Military Sealift Command in 1970, became the single managing agency for the Department of Defense's ocean transportation needs. The command assumed responsibility for providing sealift and ocean transportation for all military services as well as for other government agencies.

During the Persian Gulf War, Military Sealift Command distinguished itself as the largest source of defense transportation of any nation involved. Command resources were tasked to deliver more than 12 million tons of wheeled and tracked vehicles, helicopters, ammunition, dry cargo, fuel and other supplies and equipment during the war. At the high point of the war, more than 230 government-owned and chartered ships participated in a sealift effort responsible for delivering the largest part of the international arsenal that soundly defeated Iraqi aggression.

Thought for the day :
"Make a wish, it might come true."

You Know You Are Not A Kid Anymore When...
You start believing that you really did walk five miles to school barefoot and in the snow.

You Might Belong To A Redneck Church If…..
People ask, when they learn that Jesus fed the multitudes, whether the two fish were bass or catfish, and what bait was used to catch 'em.

Amazing Fact #37...

Morning, snippy! Great thread.

My father was on the DE Edgar G. Chase, escorting convoy NY 119 - mostly civilian ships, tugs , barges - slow moving - carrying railroad cars and other supplies across the Atlantic in Sept.'44. Not smooth sailing.

Bless all who brave the seas to help defend our country.

These are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the Word, accept it, and bear fruit.

Lord, I would be soil in which You can plant
Your Word with its promise of fruit;
I want to be open to You every day,
So what You have planted takes root

A heart open to God is soil in which the seed of His Word can flourish.

1934 George "Sparky" Anderson South Dakota, baseball manager (Reds, Tigers)

Ahhh. Good manager. The Reds were never the same once he left. Back when baseball was still fun to watch.

Sparky Anderson Quotes

A baseball manager is a necessary evil.

Baseball is a simple game. If you have good players and if you keep them in the right frame of mind then the manager is a success.

Casey knew his baseball. He only made it look like he was fooling around. He knew every move that was ever invented and some that we haven't even caught on to yet.

I don't believe a manager ever won a pennant. Casey Stengel won all those pennants with the Yankees. How many did he win with the Boston Braves and Mets?

I don't want to embarrass any other catcher by comparing him to Johnny Bench.

I only had a high school education and believe me, I had to cheat to get that.

I understand people who boo us. It's like going to Broadway show, you pay for your tickets and expect to be entertained. When you're not, you have a right to complain.

If I ever find a pitcher who has heat, a good curve, and a slider, I might seriously consider marrying him, or at least proposing.

If I hear Bowie Kuhn say just once more he's doing something for the betterment of baseball, I'm going to throw-up.

If you have to choose between power and speed and it often turns out you have to make that choice, you've got to go for speed.

It's a terrible thing to have to tell your fans, who have waited like Detroit's have, that their team won't win it this year. But it's better than lying to them.

Me carrying a briefcase is like a hotdog wearing earrings.

My idea of managing is giving the ball to Tom Seaver and sitting down and watching him work.

People who live in the past generally are afraid to compete in the present. I've got my faults, but living in the past is not one of them. There's no future in it.

Players have two things to do. Play and keep their mouths shut.

The great thing about baseball is when you're done, you'll only tell your grandchildren the good things. If they ask me about 1989, I'll tell them I had amnesia.

The only reason I'm coming out here tomorrow is the schedule says I have to.

The only thing I believe is this: A player does not have to like a manager and he does not have to respect a manager. All he has to do is obey the rules.

The players make the manager, it's never the other way.

They say the first World Series is the one you remember most. No, no no. I guarantee you don't remember that one because the fantasy world you always dreamed about is suddenly real.

They're loyal Royal all the way. But, they're not tough fans, a player does not have to worry about being insulted there.

We're the best team in baseball, but not by much.

You give us the pitching some of these clubs have and no one could touch us, but God has a way of not arranging that, because it's not as much fun.

This should be over the door to every lockerroom in sports!
