No ones going to save us dude. Its up to us and us alone.
These are the words of a text message I received from a fellow conservative upon the revelation that South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford had disappeared for a few days to spend time with his mistress in Argentina. After the cumulative disaster that were the 2008 GOP primaries, conservatives desperately thought that, for once, we might have an ardent conservative particularly a fiscal conservative run and actually capture the White House in 2012.
And this was not your garden-variety, self-proclaimed conservative Republican who interpreted conservatism as an ideology of merely slower government growth. No, this guy was the real deal. He fought to keep his state from accepting dirty stimulus funds from the federal government while other governors gobbled up the money in complete disregard for their supposed principles and for the well-being of the younger generations that must repay the debt. He has attended legislative sessions with piglets under his arms in demonstration of his ardent opposition to pork. He has walked the walk, and is still doing it.
Indeed, media personalities couldnt be more frustrating when they proclaim that Sanfords blunder is yet another blow to an already-aching GOP. The fact is that many conservatives didnt regard Sanfords affiliation with the GOP as anything beyond an annoying necessity. They viewed Sanford as being in the mold of Pat Toomey, Jim DeMint, Tom Coburn and Jeff Flake you know, the guys who spend much of their time combating the Republican establishment. They are the guys who never see a scandal in their voracious hunt for smaller government and against politicians abuse of public office. The fact that Sanford made conservatives doubt even this already tiny group of political stars is beyond infuriating.
Sanfords sin, like that of any adulterer, is absolutely nauseating and, absent repentance, is deserving of a deeper circle of hell than Dante would ever ascribe to it. This is why only a few conservatives would trust Sanford again unless he cuts off all relations with his mistress, demonstrates genuine contrition, works fervently to rebuild his family and earns the forgiveness of his wife and kids.
And indeed if Sanfords conversion is accepted as sincere even by his most wounded wife, who are we to deny him our support for any political pursuit based on this sin especially when he has excelled more than most at his job as governor? Democrats never asked Bill Clinton to step down when he cheated on his wife, even when he explicitly lied under oath and to the entire country. Likewise, few if any Republicans withheld their vote from heroic John McCain in 2008 for cheating on his wife and proceeding to marry another woman.
As far as affairs go, Sanfords story is not among the worst which does not take away from its intrinsic immorality, but raises questions as to why his treatment has been worse than usual. Some credit the difference to his supposed use of state assets for personal reasons. But the best his opponents have been able to find is that, on a completely legitimate commerce trip he took to Brazil and Argentina last year, he apparently made time to see his mistress. Yet politicians use such opportunity of being in a distant location for personal reasons all the time and its only logical (unlike, say, dropping up to a quarter-million dollars solely to take the First Lady on a hours-long date in NYC).
From a public-duty perspective, Sanfords greatest lapse of judgment was disappearing without much contact, but rhetoric and attack dogs aside, its really not that appalling for a governor to be unavailable for a few days at least not a big enough deal to disqualify him from the presidency. Its not like he hung out with a terrorist, or for 20 years espoused a church run by a conspiratorial bigot.
But its not really all about cheating and disappearing, of course. By sticking to the laws of economics and fiscal integrity, Sanford has managed to build enemies on both sides of the aisle. Since Obamas election, but especially since Sanfords rejection of porkulus funds, Democrats have feared Sanford as a definitively non-McCainiac presidential candidate who could energize conservatives against President Obama in 2012. They have been running ads against him. The third-ranking Democrat in the House played the racism card in response to Sanfords statement that printing a lot of money could lead to hyper-inflation à la Zimbabwe.
The New York Times wildly sensationalized an article about Sanford by titling it Governor Used States Money to Visit Lover, while it went on to explain that he merely met up with his mistress while on a legitimate business development trip to Argentina.
And, a bit surprisingly, it seems that some simply have not overcome the embarrassment dealt to them by President Clinton. Also in the New York Times, Gail Collins wrote about a lesson to be learned from the Sanford story: Im thinking its time for the Republicans to apologize for putting us through the Clinton impeachment. We seem to have pretty well established that sexual stone-throwing is a dangerous sport.
Wow. Never mind that Clinton was impeached on grounds of perjury and obstruction of justice. What is most disturbing is the apparent admission that the heat launched at Sanford is a form of revenge for what Clinton brought unto himself. This behavior makes even more sense in light of a recent Gallup poll showing that Democrats are five times as likely as Republicans to believe that marital infidelity is morally acceptable.
The fact is that even if Sanford was the only politician who has cheated on his spouse (which he most certainly is not), he still would not rank anywhere near the bottom of politicians ethical scale. Not because he is a moral giant, mind you, but because all the others are so, so far from being one.
A great majority of politicians, from both parties, continuously engage in wasteful spending, pork and other abuses of taxpayer money. They subsidize the businesses of their campaign donors and choke the rest. They take actions that they affirmatively believe will harm the economy if it will help their re-election. They are dirty.
Putting Sanfords marital infidelity aside, the governor has been a hero to anyone who has ever paid taxes, and more importantly, anyone who wishes to live in a prosperous country. It may be for this reason that only 18 percent of South Carolina voters, even after the recent hullabaloo, say that Sanfords ethical standards are lower than most politicians. It is incredible then that so many seem to care more about Sanfords sin in Argentina than about the hundreds of remaining politicians putting every American into debt for decades to come. Our priorities are more than skewed.
If a Mark Sanford presidency would look anything like the Mark Sanford governorship, and if Sanford would respect the small-government roots of the U.S. Constitution like he respected small-government principles in South Carolina, America would be better off than it would be under nearly any figure in the American political scene. Much, much better off.
And it is still possible. Following the debacle, Sanford said: What I find interesting is the story of David, and the way in which he fell mightily, he fell in very very significant ways. But then picked up the pieces and built from there. Any Christian, and most Americans must believe that aside from whether or not he will actually do so, Sanford is capable of picking up the pieces and rebuilding. He might never again be regarded as highly as he once was. But he could unquestionably be regarded higher than most in his league.
Definitely poor planning. He should imported Maria rather than exporting himself. Then he could have used Billy Jeff's strategy: he'd stop by Gennifer Flowers's apartment while out jogging for exercise.
Sanford completing his term will guarantee a Democratic governor next time. As for the POTUS thing, it’s delusional. This article is not worth reading because the title is in denial. Far, far worse than the affair was his erratic - almost sociopathic - scheme to disappear from civilization and his duties as governor to a country several thousand miles away perhaps thinking no one would notice. He’s a derelict and an incompetent.
Totally agree. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
(BTW, it was Bristol who had the child out of wedlock)
Nonsense. That didn't occur with Larry Craig in ID and the Senate seat, the Dems have a serious problem with no real substantial candidates. The problem WE have is if Bauer gets the Governorship. Bauer DID almost lose, he won by ONE percent in '06, a very damaged incumbent. If he becomes Governor carrying his baggage and RINO inclinations (and other "personal" stuff, think Crist 'n Craig), he will insist on running for the full term and cripple whomever ends up the nominee (which might very well be him) and THEN a Dem could win, even an unimpressive one (like Hodges did in '98 over Beasley). Sanford assures Bauer doesn't get the Governorship and cause that scenario to happen. The GOP can then have their candidates run "against" him (or ostensibly claim to be against him), and still hold it. Unless Sanford violated the law or committed an impeachable offense (he hasn't), there's no reason to remove him now. Let him finish the job he was elected to.
I know we all sin. I’m just tired of folks like Bennett saying who we should and shouldn’t vote for or support and then when they trot out their immaculate star, their star goes to pieces all on their own.
LOL! I was SO SURE I had it figured out!
You said — Has The New York Times already endorsed him in the Republican primary?
—
Yep, that’s the “ploy” that the Democrats and liberals like to foist upon conservative voters... all right... LOL...
Next you’ll be hearing that they also support Romney, a cult group member who will never get the vote of a significant portion of the GOP Christian right, as a large segment will never vote for a cult member for President, besides a large group who will never vote for a liberal, too... :-)
That’s why they were so happy to have McCain there, so McCain could give his fake support for Pallin, to “toss a crumb” to the conservatives, too.
Now, you’ve got McCain who is embarrassed about Palin and Romney who sends out his goons, whenever there’s a chance to keep shooting down Palin.
Yep, these Democrats sure do know how to pick the right guys for us conservatives... LOL...
You said — By next month Sanford will replace McCain as the Dems favorite Republican.
—
Abso-dam-lutely... LOL...
You said — No. Not buying.
—
And the Democrats are so, so sorry to hear that...
You said — Okay... here you go. But she’s got a tough uphill battle against a press and country club RINO establishment that’s got the long knives arrayed against her...
—
Heck! You had the McCain liberal wing/establishment and the Romney goons after her before the election was even over...
Well, I have heard that kind of sentiment voiced elsewhere.
I hear murderers aren’t that unhappy with their deed, as much as they are about getting caught... LOL...
How is he going to come out against socialized medicine when he promoted it and enacted it in Massataxes.
You said — I think a bigger problem for Romney is going to be his MassCare program.
—
Oh..., “What a tangled web we weave, when we seek to deceive.”
LOL...
Heck if he could name this 80’s song and artist, I’d vote for him...
Extra credit for any FReeper who can name that tune...
Whenever she’s around
My whole world starts coming down
And I lose control
When she’s away I began to miss her
She holds me close and I can’t resist her
She kisses me on the lips
Walks away and wiggles her hips
And I lose control
Gotta have that girl, she’s all I ever wanted
Don’t tell your man
I got a plan
So understand that I can never be the type of guy
That will try to make you cry, -—
— were never true to take the blame
So I will make your mine, don’t look behind
In time the thing will fit the crime
Like they say, what comes around goes around
And brings you down
Maria, yeah some place for us
Maria, somewhere a place for us
Together we will be, until eternity
Somewhere out there, I got to make you mine
Tonight in the corners of my lonely room
I pray for your salvation, rehabilitation
And I pray to the Lord above to forever bring me love
And as I fall asleep to dream once more
I have to make you mine
This is no more about adultery then it was with Clinton.
This man needs to resign immediately.
That train left the station.
Well, he wouldn’t have gotten “set up” if he had been thinking with the big head instead of the little one.

Romney walked away with the Free Republic member poll on Super Tuesday. I can't seem to hotlink the image, but it is linked in my post #255 here:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1965093/posts?q=1&;page=251.
Which GOP presidential hopeful do you want to see win the most delegates on Super Tuesday?
Mitt Romney________75.1%___1,627 votes
Ron Paul___________12.0%____ 261
Mike Huckabee______7.7%_____166

It’s a good thing that FReepers found out about him before he bamboozled all of us then... LOL...
