Fred Thompson: Pro-Choice Republican
Libertarian Republican ^ | April 7, 2007 | Eric Dondero

On Abortion: "Government should stay out of it... The ultimate decision must be made by the women... Government should treat its citizens as adults capable of making moral decisions on their own." -- Fred Thompson, July 1994

Are the Social Cons ignorant of Thompson's background?

Back in the early to mid-1990s, there was a raging battle in the Republican Party between the Moderates/Libertarians versus the Religious Right. On one side there was Ann Stone's Republicans For Choice, the Ripon Society, Log Cabin Clubs and the organization that I had founded in 1990 - the Republican Liberty Caucus. On the other side was the Religious Right.

Tennessee was right smack dab in the middle of it all.

The leader of the TN Anti-Religious Right forces at the time was Michael McCloskey.

During the same time, Fred Thompson was making noises of running for the US Senate. McCloskey was one of the ones who was influential in recruiting him to run. McCloskey saw him as a Celebrity counter-force to the Religious Right/Pro-Lifers that could win the GOP Nomination.

And the Religious Right, predictably came after Thompson. It was a bitterly fought primary. Thompson's opponent was Religious Rightist John Bakkes. In the end, Thompson's celebrity status carried him through, and he won with 62% to Bakkes's 37%. Many credited McCloskey and his "Young Republican brigades" with helping Thompson's win.

It’s not surprising that the Thompson people can’t come to terms that Fred actually was pro-choice at one time. He did change his mind and that’s OK with me. Romney though, is getting blasted for doing the same thing.

And as for Rudy, everyday for months now he’s been blasted by his enemies with every conceivable type of charge and mudslinging you can think of: He’s a baby-killer, he’s gay, he’s a cross-dresser, he wants to take your gun away, he’s anti-ferret, he’s Mussolini, he’s a friend of Kerik, he’s Hitler, he’s a tyrant, the firefighters (union) hate him, he likes the NY Yankees, his wife staples dogs, he supports Chavez, he’s an adulterer, he’s in the mob, he’s bald, he has a lisp, he’s a racist, he's a New Yorker, he’s a draft-dodger, etc., etc., etc.

In spite of all this, he’s remains consistently on top of all the national and many state polls. So Thompson supporter, there’s no need to be overly sensitive and thin-skinned about the criticism thrown his way. Welcome to the club.

You left out the third issue on which Fred Thompson was wrong. I assume it was campaign finance reform? And on that he has since changed his mind and he now regrets having voted for CFR.

The funniest thing about this is how the Rudy-bots pretend that the abortion issue isn't hurting their guy at all. Then, the second a viable opponent appears, the first thing they do is go after his record on pro-life issues.

Something really stinks about the Rudy-bots. They really do think we're all stupid red-necks.

That doesn’t mean a thing. What was his voting record? It’s a bit funny when supporters of the most liberal Republican in the field attack another Republican’s conservative credentials.

And before anyone goes off on me, I just want to amke it clear that I haven’t decided who I’m voting for, though I’m leaning toward Romney, Thompson, or (if he’s in) Gingrich.

I am not voting for Thompson. But this quote is from 1994.
Thompson has an undeniably pro-life position today. Most unfair of the people who are posting this.

Why Rootie won't win.

Take the Republican party.

Subtract almost all the pro-life crowd.

Subtract those who believe in the right to keep and bear arms.

You now have a much smaller party than the Democrat party.

Some say that Rootie will pick up the "security moms". Not so. When Hillary is on the dem ticket the "security moms" will become "gender voters" in a heartbeat.

Hillary can and will crush Rootie very flat and thin.

That is what will happen if Rootie gets the nomination.

I look at Thompson’s VOTES in the Senate to see what I need to see. I trust him more than I do the ‘Catholic in Name Only’ candidates who SAY they are ‘personally opposed’ to abortion, but they vote FOR abortion every change they get.

Yeah that qoute from Bob is a good one, I remember when Susan Estrich told Sean Hannity on his show that Rudy’s views were close to hers...that scared me right there.

Marvin,

Here it is, again. I’m hoping you can remember back to the time in question.

This is frustrating because Rudy Romney and McCain are not worthy IMO.

From what I've read so far, Thompson had a perfect Pro-Life vote while in the Senate. His response on Chris Wallace was better than I've heard since Reagan. He got a 0% from NARAL and almost 100% from NRLC except for technical reasons.

On Life and Family issues he’s way better than the "top 3". I hope we can find out the real deal on this. I’m holding out hope.
