DETROIT, February 24, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Over the objections of Catholics who have been outraged over Mercy High School's inclusion of pro-abortion Governor Jennifer Granholm in their annual fundraiser, the auction of a lunch with the governor took place this weekend. The lunch with Granholm brought $3,750 for the Farmington Hills Catholic girls school and a chance for two of its students to dine with the governor.
Earlier the school had withdrawn the controversial auction prize responding to concerns from Catholics, including concerns from the office of Detroit's Cardinal Adam Maida. However, the school later flip-flopped on the decision.
Detroit News Channel 4 says that over 100 protesters were outside during the auction.
It now remains to be seen if the school will designate the $3750 for something that will specifically counteract Granholm's defiance of church moral teaching. It will also be interesting to see if the students dining with the governor will use the occasion to address the same issue.

Auction Item Sold Despite Anti-Abortion ProtestLunch With Governor Sells For $3,750
February 24, 2003
Nearly 100 protesters showed up outside Mercy Catholic High School for girls in Farmington Hills Saturday evening to protest the "Lunch with Governor Granholm" item being sold at the Night with the Stars auction.
Demonstrators told Local 4 that a Catholic school is no place for Granholm and her pro-choice views.
"It's very disappointing seeing how Jennifer Granholm is the chief spokesperson for abortion in the state of Michigan," said Sister Regina Doelker, Mercy High School's president.
The school had pulled the lunch from the auction earlier this month after vigorous protests by parents, alumnae and local Catholics who are against Granholm's stance on abortion.
Granholm has said she is personally opposed to abortion but supports abortion rights.
The school later decided to reinstate the lunch because it celebrates Mercy's outstanding tradition in educating "Women Who Make a Difference."
Police surrounded the high school during the auction to make sure the demonstration remained under control, Local 4 reported.
"We're just out here to make sure that everybody's rights are protected," said Chief William Dwyer of the Farmington Hills Police Department.
The luncheon reportedly sold for $3,750.

Before Vatican II the governor would have been called a public sinner for holding the views she does. Of course the Church would have been considered uncivil by many--but countless babies would have been born who would otherwise have been murdered in the womb. The Novus Ordo Church instead is polite--and abortion has become just another choice for Catholics. Now Catholic high school girls are taught it's okay to be pro-abortion--and the school can make three thousand bucks besides. Whoopie.
So tell me, everybody, all you who continually defend the New Order--how has Vatican II improved the Church one iota? Where are these splendid spiritual fruits we were promised? How come so many priests and bishops are out-and-out bad Catholics? Who ordained and elevated these men? When is this Pope going to come down hard on the prelates who create this permissive climate even in their high schools--or must we wait another twenty-five years? When are you going to vote with their feet--and just leave the charade behind and become traditionalist?

vote with their feet=vote with your feet.

Oh, please God, shut up already.

My pope is John Paul II--unfortunately. He has failed his Church.

I am not a Catholic, but it is refreshing to see a Catholic have such deep convictions and stand up for the hard truths. Hang in there.
Respectfully,

The luncheon reportedly sold for $3,750.
That's all? Either the people really don't like her or they're cheap. LAME.
Aside from that, she should be ashamed of herself.

Okay, that's the second insult you've posted. Do you always lash out at people for no good reason--or do you have one? If so, why not post it? If not, can it be you lack an argument because I'm just telling the truth? Is that what's got you upset? If so, it's understandable you would prefer the ad hominem attack.

I will--and thanks.

C'mon Notwithstanding, UR is raising legitmate questions. The stuff happened, and I don't blame the Pope for it all, the NCCB has collectively thumbed their noses at him for a long time, but he has some power to hire and fire, and he famously used it to threaten a Bishop who married and nuns who attempted to become priests, but not against the buggerers. I have deep respect for him, but he needs to make an example of this Bishop and many priests. It would do a lot to provide comfort to the wrong families, a lesson to remaining Bishops, and leadership to millions of Catholics. It's plain and simple. And open to discussion. V's wife.

Whether the current pope has exhibited heroic virtue and excelled in shepherding the Church is not, in the estimation of most Catholics with traditional values and piety, at all open to debate: he has.
UR's every word is vitriol.

I respectfully submit that our opinions and views are inadequate to determine what precisely the pope should do in his pastoral ministry.
The pope may not do what we think ought to be done, but then again we are not responsible for safeguarding the faith AND shepherding the flock. AND we do not have all the facts as we sometimes think we do.
Nor do we know what facts the pope has at hand.
UR makes the mistake of condemning the pope (and anything that came after Vatican II, by the way). This is different than wondering what the hell is going on (which is certainly a valid thing to comment upon).
UR condemns where he is only right to question.

Well, he clearly asked about five questions in his post. I don't intend to join him as a traditionalist, but I accept his questions as legitimate as to when, for instance, some spiritual fruits are going to abundently show themselves. There was a post on here a few weeks back concerning a perspective Father Ian Ker had on Vatican II. He approached it from the point of view of John Cardinal Newman who said the water does not flow clearest near the stream. Meaning we are still very close to the originating wellspring of Vatican two to be clearly seeing its vital waters which will run clearer downstream in a time sense if you will. I agree. I also think, though, the Pope who takes time to condemn a married Bishop could condemn a Bishop like Adamec. The wounded cry out for relief. V's wife.

"When are you going to stop beating your wife?"
is a statement as much as it is a question.
The litany of questions is an accusatory statement implying that the pope can right every wrong at will.
Your stream analogy seems pertinent.
