Father James Keenan, S.J., during the keynote address for this year’s annual Outreach Conference, blasphemously cited a “queer theologian” to suggest that saints are “often” homosexual.
During his keynote address for the 2026 Outreach Conference at Georgetown University, the Jesuit cited the work of Flora Tang to claim that the saints are “often themselves instructive as queer saints.”
Keenan, who has served as a theology professor at the nominally Catholic Boston College for over 20 years, also compared “queer theologians” to civil rights activists and so-called “Catholic feminists.”
“Flora Tang makes clear in ‘What Queer Theory Taught Me About the Saints’ that the saints are often themselves instructive as queer saints,” Keenan said during his address. “Yet she prompts us ‘to go beyond clinging onto narratives of queer certitude and move toward an openness to fragmented narratives that do not tidy up voices of mourning and unfulfilled hopes for a queer and decolonized church.'”
Tang’s 2022 article for Political Theology Network blasphemously insinuates that several saints were homosexuals, including Sts. Sergius and Bacchus, fourth-century Roman soldiers who were martyred together for refusing to offer sacrifice to the Roman gods, and Sts. Perpetua and Felicity, third-century companion martyrs, each of whom had children.

The allegations appear to stem from the sexualization of stories involving several great saints who had completely platonic Christian friendships.
Keenan continued in his address: “Let me add that I do not think the prudence of queer theologians is much different from the prudence of civil rights activists nor of Catholic peace activists or of Catholic feminists.”
The priest notably omitted any mention of the Catholic Church’s perennial teaching on same-sex “marriage.”
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered” and “contrary to the natural law” and that the homosexual inclination is “objectively disordered.” The Catechism is very clear that homosexual activity can never be approved and repeats that “(h)omosexual persons are called to chastity.” Homosexual acts are mortal sins; therefore, anyone who commits these sins and does not repent through the sacrament of confession is in danger of hell.

Furthermore, while Keenan glowingly compares “queer theologians” to “Catholic feminists,” he ignores the Church’s teaching that clearly condemns this ideology.
Traditional Catholic teaching holds that men and women are equal in dignity as creatures made in the image and likeness of God, while at the same time defending the hierarchical diversity of roles within the conjugal relationship. This is taught according to an order rooted in nature for the sake of complementarity, rather than as a prejudice.
Fr. Keenan, like his fellow Jesuit Fr. James Martin, the founder of Outreach, has a long history of explicitly contradicting the Church’s teaching on same-sex “marriage.”
Unlike Martin, Keenan holds three theological degrees, including a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) and a Doctorate in Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) from the Pontifical Gregorian University, and has worked as a theology professor for nearly 40 years at multiple nominally Catholic universities.
Most notably, back in 2003, Keenan testified against H.3190, a proposed constitutional amendment in Massachusetts that would have defined marriage as a stable union between a man and a woman, on the erroneous grounds that it was “contrary to Catholic teaching on social justice.”
“As a priest and as a moral theologian, I cannot see how anyone could use the Roman Catholic tradition to support H. 3190,” the priest falsely claimed at the time.

I was educated by the Jesuits before they got woke and a jar of Vaseline...
The Catholic Church is a great institution. But far too often, the leaders of that institution are a trashy mess.
And that’s more than just a pity. A clash of civilizations is coming. The Catholic Church should be a strong and reliable ally in that clash. But we sure aren’t seeing that now.
🙁
I am just going to say- off the headline, I won’t read this
The priesthood is not intended and never will be a place to go for men who are not married because they are gay
It is the opposite
And if anyone wants to opine, there are multitudes published on the lives of the saints. Read one or two before going by what this person has written
Projection.
It’s characteristic of gays.......to them everybody is gay.....just still closeted.
This cup of coffee is gay
What else can I say?
Everyone is gay.
This is the same tired playbook: take a minor comment or speculative article by a single cleric, amplify it through a partisan blog, and pretend the universal Church has abandoned Tradition. Posting sensationalist headlines doesn’t change deposit-of-faith realities; it just shows a total reliance on tabloid-style ecclesiastical gossip.
Ebb did you ever read the scriptures and the catechism?
Exclusively reading ragebait sites and substack speculation is not healthy for you
The Society of Jesus was restored by Pope Pius VII, a Benedictine, on August 7, 1814.
Big mistake.
Jesuit says what.
The greatest enemies of Jews are liberal Jews.
The greatest enemies of Catholics are Jesuits.
(Coming from one raised as Catholic.)
Jesuit priests are “always” gay.
I was educated by Jebbies as well. Saints? Gay? Maybe that’s why so many of them became saints. I learned years later the Jesuit headmaster of my Prep school was “decommissioned” after boys complained of being molested. So, I guess he may be designated for sainthood. There were also a few “decommissioned” on the college level. Personally, I always thought they are overrated as academics. A lot of them were head cases.
