A pastor at a Baptist church in Texas allowed children to smash statues of angels and the Blessed Virgin Mary on stage as a reward during a “Bible drills” exercise.
After a recent service at Stedfast Baptist Church in Cedar Hill, Texas, pastor Jonathan Shelley posted videos from his @bannedpastor X account on October 12-13 showing the children smashing “Catholic Mary Statues” and “Catholic Idols,” justifying his anti-Catholic actions as defending the Second Commandment. He had preached a sermon on the topic of the Second Commandment and idol worship.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church instructs the faithful that the “honor paid to sacred images is a respectful veneration, not the adoration due to God alone.”
Shelley can be seen smiling as one young girl takes a hammer to a statue of Mary in front of the church’s pulpit. The clip on the Protestia X account has drawn more than 100,000 views and plenty of backlash from Protestants as well as Catholics.
Shelley’s ministry has been surrounded by controversy in the past. He has preached that homosexuals are “worthy of death,” which led to his church being evicted from its building in 2022 for violating the terms of a lease agreement for threats and inciting violence. The fundamentalist preacher and evangelist defended his LGBT remarks as “believing what the Bible says.”

I have seen Baptist churches with Nativity scenes including statues of Our Lord, Our Lady, St. Joseph, an Angel, and the Christ Child. Will he do those next?
I’m not Catholic but this seems like someone wanting headlines. What lesson is he teaching children?

He’s like Candace; he found a way to make money through a niche audience and isn’t backing away from it.
If you have ever seen his mentor Steven Anderson then you know this is about headlines, clicks and views. This is teaching children to hate Catholics, and disrespect the mother of Jesus. I’m sure Jesus is very thrilled to see his mother treated like this.
I’m not Catholic but this is wrong and sickening
Those kids need safety glasses. Ceramic shards are nothing to play around with.
Leave Candace out of this. This guy just did a “yo momma” on the Mother of God and I want no where near him when God goes to smite him.
Teaching kids to just break stuff that you don’t agree with seems like a bad plan.
When the Taliban did it, we thought they were fanatical lunatics.
Those kids need a new church and pastor
Plenty of FReepers are very happy about this news.
Low IQ eyes.
Exactly why I posted this. I don’t agree with a lot of religions but I don’t go breaking their stuff.
What does God say about Idols?
Scripture presents idols as false substitutes for God.
The article has an agenda, what is it? We are looking at just one data point of an event and from that make assumptions.
We don’t know the heart of the people involved but where is God in this situation? What is God saying?

I believe there is a tendency to think any person with the title Pastor, Reverend, Priest, etc must be a devout Christian. I also believe people that accept those titles and abuse their faith should get down on their knees every night and pray there is no Hell.
Which is simply word games, since more than one word can be used for worship, and to deny one is not doing so by asserting it is not Latria when one would have a hard time in Bible times explaining kneeling before a statue and praising the entity it represented in the unseen world, even with adulation, attributes, glory and titles never given in Scripture to created beings (except to false gods) - including having the uniquely Divine power glory to hear and respond to virtually infinite numbers of prayers addressed to them, and beseeching such for Heavenly help, and making offerings to them - would constitute worship in Scripture. .
"Moses, put down those rocks! I was only engaging in hyper dulia, not adoring her. Can't you tell the difference?"
Yet Catholics imagine by playing word games they avoid crossing the invisible line between mere "veneration" and worship. One could argue, since they do not use the word "idolatry," then it is not."
Using the Catholic argument in every instance of idolatry below, the worshipers could claim, "I was only engaging in hyper dulia, not adoring! Can't you tell the difference?"
Rev 11:16 And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped [proskynéo] ] God,And they worshipped [proskynéo] ] the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped [proskynéo] ] the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
Rev 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship [proskynéo] ] him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Rev 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would [proskynéo] ] not worship [proskynéo] ] the image of the beast should be killed.
Rev 14:7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship [proskynéo] ] him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship [proskynéo] ] God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
Rev 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped [proskynéo] ] his image.
These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
Rev 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had [proskynéo] ] not worshipped [proskynéo] ] the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
Rev 22:8 And I John saw these things, and heard them.
And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship [proskynéo] ] before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
Why not burn a bible, flush some live goldfish, or maybe score/kill some trees on public land just for fun? Needlessly offending people's sensitivities is rude and leads to increasing levels of incivility.
