Psalm 23

A psalm of David.

1  The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.

2 
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,

3      he refreshes my soul.

He guides me along the right paths

    for his name’s sake.

4  Even though I walk

    through the darkest valley,[a]

I will fear no evil,

    for you are with me;

your rod and your staff,

    they comfort me.

5  You prepare a table before me

    in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil;

    my cup overflows.

6  Surely your goodness and love will follow me

    all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord

    forever.

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,
According To Your Will and Promise.
We Pray That You Will Forgive The Sins of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

This we Pray Together,
As We Await Your Messiah,

To Set Up His Kingdom,

You may remember my fond recollection of Miss Marcus, my second grade teacher. She read the Twenty-Third Psalm (King James Version, of Course!) to us every morning after we saluted the Flag and sang "My Country Tis Of Thee". Well, evidently, my little brother Tom had Miss Marcus in the second grade as well.

A half century later, at my husband's funeral, I asked Tom to read the Twenty-Third psalm and handed him my husband's Bible. Tom started to read, but the words on the page didn't;t match the words coming out of his mouth. He asked if anyone had reading glasses. Tom's wife, Nell, handed Tom hers, which were glittery purple, and Tom, now looking a bit like Elton John, was able to read the words on the page. What was the difference? My husband's Bible was a "New American Standard Version" and Tom had memorized the King James Version".

Today's posting of the Psalm is the "New International Version", which is nice too.

My favorite for Psalm 23, though, is the KJV, which Miss Marcus (a Jewish Lady in the Boston Public School System), taught me and my brother so many years ago.

Like all of David's Psalms, this one shows the depth of his dependence upon God. His own experience as a shepherd gave him insights about this relationship that resonates even with a 7 year-old growing up in the City of Boston.
