Bishop Schneider: Synodality is a ‘code word to undermine Catholic doctrine’

Bishop Athanasius Schneider pointed out that the word ‘synodality’ is purposely ambiguous and is used in a 'cunning' attempt to promote moral relativism within the Church.

Bishop Athanasius Schneider warned that “synodality” is a “cunning code word used to undermine Catholic doctrine.”

In an interview published Thursday with AdVaticanum that discussed Our Lady’s title of Co-Redemptrix, the suppression of the Traditional Latin Mass, and interreligious contact, the auxiliary bishop of Astana, Kazakhstan gave his view on the meaning of “synodality.”

Schneider suggested that the meaning of “synodality” has deliberately been kept undefined and ambiguous so that people may interpret it according to their own purpose.

Implicit in this concept of synodality is a “concrete plan to adapt slowly the doctrine and the structure of the Catholic Church to Protestant churches and even to the spirit of this world regarding sexuality and morality,” he went on.

Synodality essentially “adapt(s) the Catholic Church to this world” and swaps the divine constitution of the Church for “humanly invented, Protestant-styled democratic structures and methods,” the bishop said.

“This is a very dangerous method, which must be stopped,” Schneider urged.

He described synodality as the apex of “modernism” because it embodies “complete relativism,” especially moral relativism.

“These are clerics, mostly, who have lost the faith, or who are very much no longer interested in evangelizing and converting people to make them really disciples of Christ and members of the Mystical Body of Christ,” Schneider said.

What is “forbidden” in the synodal process is “the traditional Latin Mass” and the affirmation of “the constant teaching of the Church regarding the structure of the Church,” he added.

Earlier in the interview, Schneider reiterated his proposal that the Vatican issue an apostolic constitution — even weightier than a motu proprio — in order to enshrine the traditional Latin Mass’ right to be freely offered, in a repudiation of Traditionis Custodes.

Schneider believes such a document should provide for “coexistence” of the TLM and of the Novus Ordo to bring about a “Pax Liturgica Leonina.”

The bishop offered further clarification of the faith in light of problematic statements and practices by Vatican prelates.

He first affirmed that the faithful may use the title “Co-Redemptrix” to describe the Blessed Mother despite the current Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith’s claim that this term is “always inappropriate.”

“The faithful can still use it, because there are missals approved by the popes, even with a Mass formulary, with the title of Mediatrix of All Graces. Therefore, they would have to say, ‘This Mass must be deleted from all missals,’ which would be nonsense,” Schneider noted. He also pointed out that these titles were used by Doctors of the Church.

The bishop also took aim at interreligious dialogue meetings often held in recent decades in a religious or political context. Their main problem, he said, is that they relativize Christ’s Church and treat it as if it is “equal” to other religions.

Schneider instead proposed “an interreligious meeting and dialogue in daily life,” such as the kind practiced in Kazakhstan, where Catholics, Orthodox and Muslims meet with each other, congratulate each other for their celebrations, and pray for each other.

“And this keeps us better together in harmony and peace than these huge conferences where only the leaders are meeting and the politicians are using them” for their own ends “and relativizing our Lord Jesus Christ.”

We should say on the spot to people, to Catholics: please, love your neighbours, love even the others, go to them, help them in daily life. And this will contribute more to interreligious peace and harmony.”

Asked how it was possible that the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Kazakhstan “made Communion kneeling and on the tongue the obligatory ordinary form and forbade Communion in the hand,” and continues to omit extraordinary ministers and female altar servers, Schneider attributed it to the history of the country.

He suggested that his nation was forged by fire under Bolshevik rule, when Catholics were forced to practice their faith “underground.”

Referring to the country’s current bishops, he called them the “heirs of martyrs and confessors in Kazakhstan. And they had such a deep veneration for the Holy Eucharist — such a deep veneration. They could not imagine receiving our Lord standing,” said Schenider, who remembered living through the time of religious persecution as a boy.

He lamented that Pope Paul VI, despite the “warning of the bishops,” “opened the flood” by permitting Communion in the hand.

“I consider that Communion in the hand has caused irreverence and sacrileges in the Church and is still causing them. It is one of the deepest wounds in the body of the Church and must be healed, of course, slowly,” said Schneider, who has written a book on the subject called Dominus Est: It is the Lord!

“But the first thing which must be done to restore the health of the body of the Church is to stop Communion in the hand. And it must be done by the Pope again. The Holy See opened the flood, and the Holy See must close it again. And of course, with gradual steps, but it must be done.”

The Catholic Church of my youth no longer exists. Beginning of the end was Hootenanny Masses. And then they turned the hymn writing over to gay Jesuits.
