1  Why do the nations conspire[a]
    and the peoples plot in vain?

2  The kings of the earth rise up
    and the rulers band together
    against the Lord and against his anointed, saying,

3  “Let us break their chains
    and throw off their shackles.”

4  The One enthroned in heaven laughs;
    the Lord scoffs at them.

5  He rebukes them in his anger
    and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,

6  “I have installed my king
    on Zion, my holy mountain.”
7 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:

He said to me, “You are my son;
    today I have become your father.

8  Ask me,
    and I will make the nations your inheritance,
    the ends of the earth your possession.

9  You will break them with a rod of iron[b];
    you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”

10  Therefore, you kings, be wise;
    be warned, you rulers of the earth.

11  Serve the Lord with fear
    and celebrate his rule with trembling.

12  Kiss his son, or he will be angry
    and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
    Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Summers growing up in Boston were interesting. Instead of fleeing the City, Dad would often pile us kids into the Station Wagon and head North on the Southeast Expressway to South Boston (Yes, in Boston, there are a number of places where one travels NORTH in order to go SOUTH, but I digress.) Southie had a miles-long beach, bathhouses, recreational facilities, and a beautiful view of the harbor islands. On top of that, there was a Revolutionary War Fort out on a point with a lovely park surrounding it. it. We loved going to Southie! But, what was even more fascinating was the mysterious giant hole in the ground that was visible from the Southeast Expressway that we saw as we whizzed by on the way to our Summer Fun.

"What's THAT?" my little brother and I asked.

With palpable horror in her voice, Mom replied:

"That's the Quincy Quarry. It's a HORRIBLE Place! People DIE There! NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER GO THERE!"

I used to go there all the time!" Dad replied. "All us kids used to go there."

The rest of the ride was a debate about this mysterious place called "The Quincy Quarry". This, of course, made me and my brother all the more curious.

As a teen, I had no occasion to go to the "Quawrees", but my brothers sure did. I heard stories...and then...there was that huge hole in the ground on the Southeast Expressway. I went by it all the time, and, even as an adult, remembered my parents' argument. The "Quawrees" were a Rite of Passage, and seemed to be for Boys Only. Just last night, I saw this well-done You Tube Video that tells the Story of the Quincy Quarry.

At the end of the Video is a list of people who died at the Quarry. Mom was right.

Psalm 2 opens with the Nations raging against God. The Kings of The Earth gather together in order to rebel against the King of Kings, and against His Anointed (Messiah). Stubbornness and Rebellion are Survival Traits, and we are in constant rebellion against the forces of Nature as we move forward with our lives. Trees need to be cut down and granite quarried out of the earth in order for us to build shelter. The ground needs to be broken up for planting, and animals need to be killed in order for us to eat. And, as boys become men, they have to prove themselves and struggle to get ahead. This is the result of The Fall. It didn't have to be that way.

Stubbornness and rebellion can be beneficial until it becomes against God. All the braggadocio in the world doesn't impress God, in fact, He LAUGHS at it.

Here's a little story I wrote about Penny (RIP), who was a model of Stubbornness.

Most of you know I love dogs, and have had five of them in 50 years. All but one have been rescues, and all come with plenty of stories that have become a feature on this daily thread. My current furry friend, Penny, is no exception.

While all dogs can be stubborn, Penny came with an upgrade in that department. She has an All-Paw-Braking-System that goes far beyond the typical "Dog-Brakes". In the twinkling of an eye, Penny can go from an all-out prancing gait to a full, rock-solid STOP. All four paws dig in, her muscles contract, her skin and fur ripple like a body-builder's flex, and nothing, I mean NOTHING, can move her until she's good and ready. Her face doesn't move. While not an aggressive face, it says, "I Ain't Going ANYWHERE." And that's that.

The first time Penny engaged the All-Paw-Braking-System was shortly after I got her, and it nearly dislocated my shoulder. I never did see what it was that caused her to stop, but she may have saved my life that night. Something may have been lurking in the dark. Maybe a coyote? We have them around here, after all. Anyway, I turned and went the other way and Penny gleefully complied, so perhaps there WAS something. Other times, though, there is no explanation for her engaging the All-Paw-Braking-System. Sometimes, she is just being STUBBORN.

Hosea uses this feature of our four-legged friends to describe the People of Israel. Being "Stubborn" or "Stiff-Necked" can be a survival mechanism. What other people on the Planet have survived so many attempts to annihilate them as a nation? A mere glance at a map of Africa and the Middle-East shows a huge proportion of Muslim countries surrounding Israel, all of whom have expressed the desire to destroy her. And yet, there she is. In the case of survival, "Stubbornness" is a GOOD thing.

However, throughout the history of Israel, (and, indeed, ALL of us!), the trait of stubbornness can cause us to stop dead in our tracks and go nowhere. For no reason at all, we stiffen our necks and refuse to come under the loving care of Our Shepherd, Who only wants what is best for us.

When Penny engages the Dog-Brakes, she thinks she is in control, but she really isn't. If I let go and start to walk away in disgust, she immediately trots after me, repentant and docile. Sometimes, when we are just TOO Stubborn, God has to "take His hand off us" and seem to walk away, to inspire our repentance. This is the principle taught in the Book of Hosea. Although sometimes it SEEMS that God is "walking away", He is actually coaxing us into Return, Repentance, Restoration, and Renewal.

For the record, The Quincy Quarry got filled in, and no longer is a threat to Boston's Boys. Now, they pop wheelies on E-Bikes to prove their manhood. As long as they don't do it on the Southeast Expressway, I guess it's OK. Boys will be Boys!
